“A little bit of paradise....Tucked away in Crete.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2014

Our coach arrived….. in darkest night…. and trepidation reigned
We were warmly greeted…. at the desk…and our confidence was gained.
We settled…. snugly in our room….which was quaint and well equipped
Looking forward to the morning….. and our first “Exploring” bit.
On waking in the morning…. after the passing of the night
Our sleepy eyes were treated….. to the most amazing sight!
Stretching far into the distance …was the Ocean….. Turquoise blue
And a “Giant” loomed behind us…it was a spectacular mountain view!
The sun…. was smiling smugly…. and it promised…. it would please
And exotic trees were swaying… in the gentle, welcome breeze.
We ventured to the inlet…..and the sea said…. “Come and swim!“
The water sparkled brightly….. with rocks and fishes in.
My mind recalls the echo…. of the rare acoustic sound
As we swam beneath the stark, harsh cliffs…. of this “Paradise“ we’d found.
In contrast …. near the largest pool…..dwelt the “Oopla Oopla! Man”
But we much preferred …..to hear the birds….whilst topping up our tan.
But if you like loud music…..and fun is what you seek
“The Oopla! Man” will tend your needs ….several times throughout the week.
Damnoni Beach… was calling us …..on the far side of the hill
We took on the “steps” and reached the top….the view was quite a thrill!
After Twenty minutes strolling ….we were cooling in the sea
Then …to a beach Taverna …. to have a beer or two (or three!)
On returning to Kalypso….we dressed for evening meal
The restaurant…. it was pleasant….with a warm and welcome feel.
I’d describe the food as plentiful…..good and tasty …rustic fare
But if you’re looking for food labels….there won’t be any there!
If you’re not sure what’s on offer….be it …Beef or Pork or Lamb
Your question will be answered…by the friendly kitchen man.
Twice we rode to Plakias…..on the little trundle bus
More glorious views and scenery….was enjoyed…. by both of us
We laid our towels upon the sand….under the shade of an old beach tree
We read some pages from our books……then cooled off in the sea.
Our week went by quite quickly….we didn’t go too far
Of course… you can venture further….if you choose to hire a car.
All the workers at Kalypso… are the best you’ll ever meet
In this little bit of paradise….tucked away in Crete.
If you’re not expecting “Gourmet food“…. and you’re happy with “Plonky wine”
You will enjoy this…unique, charming place….and you will have a lovely time!

Sheila & Andy Wiggins. Bristol. UK.
Stayed “All Inclusive” June 17th - 25th 2014.
Thanks Kalypso for a lovely holiday.

I have to say I was a bit worried after reading reviews that rooms would be horrible but we wanted to stay a couple of nights because of the location. I was pleasantly surprised that the room was nicer insider than I had expected. The furniture was in great condition and there was plenty of room. The bathroom was old but clean. The curtains hanging around the bed were a bit frail. The room smelt a little musty but that is probably as it had no fresh air in the bathroom and you keep your window closed to keep your belongings safe. The outside of the rooms looked pretty old including doors and windows. I am fussy but I felt comfortable here. They provided entertainment both nights we were there. Kids fun first which my daughter loved then adults. The first night they had 3 gorgeous belly dancers that were really good and entertaining. The second night was a comedian which I didn't stay to watch. They had an area with chooks, chickens and ducks too. The pool chairs around the kids pool were horrible, they don't have a back just lay flat so you can't sit up and read a book while keeping an eye on kids. You just use them as a bench to sit on unless you can fully lie down if you don't have kids to watch. The other pools seemed to have the standard adjustable sit up, they should swap them if not get rid of them. And as in all big places, people put towels on chairs to keep them for the day when they are not there, chairs are scarce around the pool so it's not polite. I had sent a few emails before our arrival to make sure they had our booking but they never replied so I called a couple of days before to confirm. All the staff were friendly, there was one older man in reception that wasn't as friendly, but I was happy after reviews I had read that we had a warm welcome. They run a kids club in the day, I didn't use this but the girls were lovely. They also had a guy rounding people up for volley ball both days. These staff carried on into the night entertainment. There was a group in the kids pool doing the dive training that was very noisy, including the instructor being noisy, some of the groups weren't staying at the hotel, it was great when they weren't there when we got to the pool the next day, more relaxing. The breakfast was really really bad, worst we have had. We just ate toast with jam, even then the bread was old. The internet was slow and only worked in the lobby for free, didn't work by the pool. You could pay 3€ for an hour to access it in your room! we didn't buy this so not sure how well it worked. I would stay here again because of the beauty in the location and the room was fine, staff friendly.

The location of this hotel is exotic. Finding the place may be difficult but once you reach, very relaxing atmosphere awaits you. Don't expect five star luxury but overall the hotel is good. Food is great. Evening entrainment is also lively but mostly for kids.

Room Tip: If u like a good sea view with a large balcony, go for sea view rooms which is slightly costlier &am...

The surroundings of the hotel are perfect and the rocky swimming area is nice. Otherwise the hotel is pretty much stuck in the 90's. There are a few smaller infinity pools which would be nice if they weren't situated in the middle of the parking lot. There is also a bigger pool but the area around it isn't very comfortable. The food was quite bad and we ended up eating elsewhere altho we had payed for half board. The rooms are very outdated altho ok for the price. They have well kept gardens around the apartments which made the place seem nicer but otherwise it feels like the location has been ruined with bad architecture and poor decisions.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 12, 2014

After 10 nights in Chania we (2 adults and 2 kids) went to Plakias in our rental car to stay at the Kalypso hotel.

The hotel is located on a mountain side at the end of a mountain road.
By car it take 5-10 minutes to travel to the popular Damnoni beach, Plakias town or some of the other small beaches and bays in the area.
Without a car it is a long walk along the road or by taking the thrilling trail over the mountain.
Of cause you can use the hotels shuttle bus or take some of the bus excursions that are offered.

The hotel is surrounded by rocky hills and the ocean. The hotel area form a kind of valley-oasis with lots of trees, ponds, small waterfalls and flowing water. It is a really nice area.

Our room at the back of the hotel was relatively large with a huge balcony. Some of the other rooms had smaller balconies though.
The AC was free and worked fine.
The refrigerator was a bit small but OK for a few bottles.
Do not leave any food unpacked in the room as the ants will find it and start an invasion. But we have seen ants in most of the hotels we have visited so that is no surprise. Keep the room clean and only a few will bother to come in.

We stayed on half board and the food for breakfast and dinner was fine. Unlike some of the small hotels there is a fairly large selection of food, fruits, deserts, cakes, ice cream etc. We always found something we liked (the kids too) and certainly got well fed every day.

The dinner restaurant opens very late at 19:30 (7:30 PM) and the evening entertainment starts at 22:00.
The entertainment was a fire show (which the kids liked), comedy etc. After the entertainment there were music and dancing for the guests.
The hotel has a bar near the bay/fjord that sometimes seems to be open till late (we did not stay up).
So this is a 'late night' hotel but there was luckily not much noise to be heard in our hotel room.

The pool and bar area got free Internet which I used every night. It worked fine although some applications such as SkyDrive could not upload images - probably because some ports were closed. As soon as we got to our next hotel in Chania it worked fine again.

The guests at the hotel are mainly French, Polish and Russian. Very few spoke English to each other. There were both younger and older guests and a few families with kids.

The best part of the hotel is the small bay/cove (fjord). The stony 'beach' at the end of the fjord is only a few meters wide but you can enter the sea at several places along the cement area with the sun chairs.
Unfortunately the cement and wooden area need some renovation at places. Some of the planks were broken and some nails were sticking out - so watch your feet.

Snorkelling in the bay/fjord is very good with lots of fish in the shallow water.
Further out and outside the bay there are fewer fish and deeper (10-30 meters) clear water where you can do some free diving.

There is a dive company at the hotel. Diving in the bay is very good as there are a lot of interesting rocks and swim through just outside the bays and a lot of marine life.
I would certainly like to go back and dive some more,

One afternoon (after the dive centre had closed) 3 guys with spear guns were killing marine life. I hope the hotel can do more to stop that - maybe by installing video surveillance in the bay. The marine life is one of the main reasons to go to the hotel so it should be protected at all cost.

The hotel got 2 nice medium sized pools with infinity views over the ocean.
The main pool is very large. The pool got some shallow areas with gradually deeper water that are nice for kids. A cool feature is the 'ship' that has been build along one side of the pool. It all looked very nice and the kids had a lot of fun (although a water slide would be nice).

There were about 6-10 kids at the hotel during our stay. There is no entertainment for the kids so it would be nice if the staff could arrange mini disco or something a few times a week.
The playground was in a terrible condition and needs a complete replacement.
A separate dining area with playthings for families with kids would be nice and would prevent the kids from annoying the other guests.

Still, our kids at 2 and 5 had good fun at the hotel. They loved the pools, the water streams, the fish in the fjord, played with the cats and danced to the music in the bar in the evening.

We liked the unusual hotel area with the many streams, the pools and especially the bay/fjord. We also liked the food and the room.
With a car the location is good and it is easy to visit the many great beaches and places in the Plakias area.

The hotel just need to fix some of the problems we have mentioned and do a bit of renovation - which should be fairly easy if the management choose to do so.

Out stay including the drinks in the restaurant were good value and we would like to go back.

The reception is more than innapropriate and for every problem the answer is '' it is not my responsibility''
The place is magic but you can stay in better ,modern and with adequate breakfast hotels with more reasonable prices

I'll start by saying that we got a screamin deal on the price for a 3 night stay here so we were ok with the fact that the resort was very outdated and a bit run down. (We did not have all inclusive). I can imagine that it was in it's hay day back in the 90's. It is a crazy exclusive location, not easy to find the little road that leads through the rocks to get there but very cool spot. The private cove is worth it alone. Great loungers and cabanas (needs major landscaping). There was a very cool set of stairs about the cove that was built into the rock that you can climb all the way up. The pools were nice but very cold. You would expect they would be heated a bit. Food was average and dining was in the typical "all-inclusive resort" style. Beware, you will not get internet in your room. But there is a nice lounge with wifi and the main pool area gets wifi as well. Also, there are no pool/beach towels provided, but you can rent one for 6 euros for the week. They don't rent them by the day which was annoying as we only needed them 2 days. The drinks are expensive. Good jumping off point to check out Preveli Beach and Triopetra beach as day trips. (I suggest both!) The room was very big and bed comfortable (although it had the typical split in the middle). The resort just needs some landscaping, painting, updated furniture/tvs etc., and overall revamping and it could be an amazing place!
