“Live Life.....King Size !”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 18, 2013

Orchha is best described as a Medieval Legacy in Stone....frozen in Time ! This fantastic property is within the precinct of the Jahangir Mahal at Orchha. Its Maharaja Suite on the top floor is really fit for the Kings ! The large entrance verandah, beautifully curtained with lace, has a swing on one side and a raised sitting arrangement on the other side overlooking the monumental Jahangir Mahal. One then enters into another verandah having a sitting room and a private Dining Room for six. Through an intricately carved wooden door, one is ushered into the majestic Bedroom, complete with a king -size fluffy bed, a large cushioned sofa, separate wardrobes and a writing table. The room is tastefully decorated with other antic pieces, paintings and fine drapery. However, the suite's Bathroom is the ultimate piece-de-resistance ! With a huge marble tub and wall-size mirrors, it gives an exquisite feeling during a luxurious bath. And while sitting on the raised toilet seat in the corner room, one can gaze around the abundant greenery of the countryside through glass windows. ( We have requested the Hotel Management to put curtains on the windows therein ! )

The chandeliers in the large Dinning Hall of the Hotel adds elegance to the regal surroundings. The ever courteous staff is eager to please their guests and one can taste some real local cuisine on special request. Thee is plenty of parking space in front of the Hotel.

Overall, the trip was really nostalgic for us on our marriage anniversary, having visited Orchha and stayed at the same Hotel and the same room way back in 1990.

Room Tip: You will simply love to laze in the Maharaja Suite !

The location of the hotel ist phantastic, right next to the palace.
This heritage hotel has a very beautiful restaurant and lobby, beautifully old style with white pillars etc. Unfortunately the food quality is on the low end. The lassi was watered down a lot, I didn't drink it. Dal was ok (you can do nothing wrong with Dal). Paneer tikka was not good. Porridge was just groce, not edible. Taste of stale sweat. No idea what they put inside.
My room was ok. Have had better rooms for lower price elsewhere. But well, you pay for the location and for being in a historic building I guess.
Overall, it was ok. Decent room (would be worth a renovation though), quiet location. But next time I would have food outside.

Stayed here for a night at the maharaja suite and it was simply outstanding ! The place is within the palace compound and mesmerises you with the grandeur of the complex. The evening light and sound show is a delight and can we heard if not seen from the room veranda. The room is spacious but what is even more worth mention is the open air front and the rich feel. If planning for Orchha, stay here for a night at least if not more.

This would have probably been one of the most awesome places ever if they could somehow renovate/maintain certain parts (while still retaining the old world charm)...

The location is simply awesome since it is right beside the Orchha main complex (Jehangir Mahal)... It has awesome views too (check some of the pics)...

The dining room has a really royal look with local music in the evenings. The food is standard fare (hygienic and reasonably tasty) as is expected in any MPTDC hotel.

The rooms have some antique furniture. But the walls are slightly damp, the bathrooms are huge but not really modern... some of the rooms in the hotel are situated slightly outside and thus, a little bit of privacy is missing...

Nevertheless, this was still an awesome experience and we would say way awesome value for money.

This 'hotel' is somewhat disconcerting, as one finds, after one has checked in, that the entire hotel consists of the one room, ie. the reception/dining room/bar/sitting area, and then the bedrooms, and that's it. If we had not been staying in the Maharajah suite, we would have felt short-changed. The suite was lovely, but as other reviews have concurred, not quite the lap of luxury one imagines; still, the surrounding views over the overgrown palace grounds, and the river glinting in the distance, and the rest of the palaces and temples of Orchha all around, help to make it the most picturesque place we stayed in the whole of India. PS. If going to the Sound and Light show, wear long clothes and mozzie spray to avoid being eaten alive!

This was the third time we stayed at Sheesh Mahal and the experience every time has been the same - warm & friendly people in an old world ambience. The place has improved significantly since our first visit in 1993. The Son etc Lumiere show is quite nicely put together, considering that Orchha was only a minor princely state in the medieval times (say up to the 18th century).
The rooms are comfortable, but obviously not modern, considering that the interiors cannot be altered, being an architectural heritage.
Walking up to the Betwa river to see the "chhatris" - memorials to the kings - is quite nice. So are the visits to the Laxminarayan and Chaturbhuj temples

Room Tip: The Maharani suite is a nice experience

We only stayed one night. The place was tired and drab and the food wasn't very good. However, the staff were friendly. We hired bikes from them - and they were in a pretty poor condition, but it was a fun thing to do. Not somewhere we would stay again.
