“Ok hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2012

Amar Mahal is a nice hotel in a very nice and small village. It's not as touristic as Agra or Jaipur and has a nice atmosphere.

We only stayed for 1 night in this hotel. We received a nice 'holi welcome' with colors and flowers. The room was a bit dusty but very big, the beds were ok. We asked for an extra bed for the children but this extra bed not even had a real mattress. We had warm water if we needed.

In the evening we ordered room service. The food wasn't fabulous but it was ok. The breakfast was a bit amateurish. We had to ask for everything as they forgot to fill empty dishes and pots, remake the tables after someone else had breakfast there etc.

The hotel has a nice terrace with a even more nice view, but they don't use this terrace, and that's a pity. It would have been great to have your breakfast there!

The swimming pool was fine. They just might clean the water a bit more as there were a lot of insects and leaves in the water.

The location of the hotel is just perfect. Only a minutes-walk from all the historic buildings of the village.

Looking though the reviews, I can see that we weren't the only ones to experience cold water and cool nights. Despite being told by the management to give the shower 10 minutes to heat up, my husband and I both ended up having cold showers, which on a rather chilly morning certainly woke us up!
The hotel is very beautiful and set around courtyard gardens which gives the impression of a luxurious palace. I am sure that the rooms were luxurious one time, but I think that that must have been quite a while ago as now they are just rather jaded if not a little tatty. The bedding had definitely seen better days!
Food scored about 60%. Both evenings we ate a la carte and enjoyed what we had. Breakfasts were okay inasmuch as they meant we didn't go hungry.
I have to say that the restaurant and bar staff were fabulous and my husband and I enjoyed talking with them both evenings. They made our stay- thank you!
Part of me wants to criticise this hotel for being somewhat disappointing, but if I am honest it is because I am judging it against hotels in larger cities-often hotels that are part of multi- national chains. That isn't fair because Orchha is only a small place and although it has lots of tourists, it isn't ( yet)a major tourist destination. Perhaps when more tourists find their way to this lovely little town, then there will be pressure to improve quality and standard. I only hope that the charm doesn't get lost along the way.

First the negative. This place is a bit cold in the winter and our room had no good heating system. You had to squeeze together at night. Otherwise the place is lovely with a great pool and several gardens. The views towards the temples are very good. The food is of the standard buffet type. You can have an Indian whisky for a comfortable 230 rupies which helps against the cold.

The hotel is nicely designed but the rooms need refurbishing with modern furniture. I wanted to have a shower when we first arrived. We were told to turn on the hot water tap and wait 10 - 15 minutes (a terrible waste of water). When the water hadn't become hot after 15 minutes we went to reception (the phone in the room didn't work) and they worked on the hot water and everntually got it working. The dining room was okay but the breakfast selection was very limited. The staff seemed to do their best with their limited resources. However I wouldn't recommend staying in this hotel.

Loved the ambiance of this hotel, not only the nestled outdoor tables and chairs but the stunning views as well. Truly gorgeous and peaceful. It was also one of the few places we stayed where we were in easy walking distance of some local shopping and the people here are truly wonderful. No one really tries to wear you down or overwhelm you. The monuments and temples are amazing, loved the evening sound and light show. Truly a favorite stop.

The hotel has a nice setting and 'looks good'..... BUT the "management" is utterly incompetent, particularly at the restaurant: they can't even make fresh lime soda (bog standard across india). they turned cream of mushroom soup into "mushrooms floating in fatty cream sans flavour"... disgusting! When we tried to explain this to them, they were stubborn and RUDE. Really, quite inexcusable at this price point. NEVER STAY HERE. NEVER EVER EAT HERE.
