We scouted the entire barrage of rest houses on this side of the river and settled down for Nargila as they seemed to have the cleanest & the airiest rooms! Do not expect 2/3 start luxury in Hampi, its a true backpackers paradise.. The rooms were basic - mosquito net, running water, no insects! and the bed was rather comfortable for the setting. They had a cushioned swing placed outside every hut which gave you the opportunity to sit outside and bask in glorious moon light a the night.
The real USP of Nargilla is the dining/sit out area. They have comfortable mattresses in place & the view from the sit out area is breath taking as you get to see sprawling acres of paddy planted while you sit down and sip in some beer or sample the amazing food. The owner has a very good sense of music and you would be enthralled to hear him play trance/party/rock on a decent sound system. ( I was taken aback when the owner played the entire album of Into the Wild on my request). They also have games like chess, cards along with some basic book collection which you can use at your discretion. You can take your own booze and the owner would allow you to consume that in the dine area( albeit reluctantly). The beer served in Nargila costs 160 INR.
Ok, lets talk about food. We sat down in the dine in area for almost 6-7 hours and sampled almost every kind of cuisine available in the menu. I was told that the chef was a Garhwali and yes, he was doing a commendable job.. The pasta was okish, chinese dishes were fabulous -we craved for the taste on that veg manchuria for the next couple of days! Overall the food quality was good and I would stick to the usual Indian fast food options of spiced chinese food and maybe pakodas.. For proper dining, there is nothing remotely close to 'Mango Tree' in Hampi( its on the temple side of the river).
Overall, highly recommend Nargila! value for money as all they charged us for the comfy hut was INR 300 for a couple. Mowgli was quoting INR 1000 and believe me, the rooms and service in Nargilla looked better than Mowgli..
