Individual structures in Hampi are not as intricate or impressive as the cave temples of Badami or the complex at Pattadakal. However, the complex taken as a whole with its plethora of sacred and secular buildings interspersed with banana plantations, coconut groves and hills resembling stacks of giant boulders creates a huge impact. Among the temple buildings Vithala temple complex has the most intricate carvings. The only other temple that comes close is the Hazara Rama temple. Otherwise the columns in most Hampi buildings tend to be rather plain.
One has to park the car some distance away from the complex and take an electric vehicle at twenty rupees per head for the complex; or walk a few hundred yards to it.
