“Beautiful surroundings but very badly maintained”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed September 11, 2009

Large Spacious Rooms with good lighting but bathrooms are small without even basic facilities - no jets /sprinklers in WC. Bathroom doors dont close, had lot of insects, Hot water is available but it took time(half a day) for hotel staff to figure out how to start hot water. Worst -the quilts had lices.

Menu did not have too many options. Food quality below average. The staff insisted on 5-7 hr notice to provide food(unless you have opted for expensive Rs400 per person per meal "food included" option).

Staff was helpful but untrained.
The property library was not easily accessible. Lighting on common areas was never there - You have to push the staff to keep the lights on in library or dining area or lobby or verandah. it felt like staying in a good nice tent because there is tea garden and mountains around but because there is no light or activity in the rest of the property.

You can walk down the tea garden but you have noplace to sit or even stand to enjoy the tea estate. The tea factory by owners is available for a visit where you can buy some expensive export quality tea - there is nothing on the house -Tea factory staff was polite enough to guide you through the factory but showed no courtesy to offer a cup of tea or a glass of water . No discounts on tea even for guests in white haven.

White Haven Estate is located away from the hustle and bustle of the main Dharamshala or Mc Leodganj crowd. Its nesteled in a tea estate and has a wonderful view of snow clad mountains from most of the rooms. It is not a luxury resort, so dont expect much, but it is clean and comfortable for a good stay. Also, the the food is great as it is like home made cooked in the estate kitchen and if you are the only guests, you can decide your own menu!! Good staff and pretty satisfactory service. A walk around the tea estate is a must as it gives an excellent view and feeling of walking among all greenery.
The rooms are quite spacious and the ones in the main building, on the ground floor also gives you a verandah to sit out and enjoy the day!
Overall an excellent quiet getaway...perfect for family and children !

We stayed at this location as part of a wonderful 17 day private tour organised by Mr V P Singh of the Indian based company 'Legends and Palaces '. The location is delightful. The bedrooms are large with wonderful views but the bedding could do with some upgrading. The same could be said of the bathrooms. The restaurant meals were satisfactory. The log fires in the evening were a real treat.

A group of us (10 people) stayed at this place and were delighted with the look and feel of this house. Unfortunately we discovered that $1000 of cash was missing from one of our suitcases and there were several questionable points of entry that would have allowed this to occur.

When we discussed this matter with the manager and told him that we will pay the rest of our deposit once this matter is resolved he physically threatened us along with verbally abusing us. While this was going on a family member called the hotel 3 times to find out our whereabouts and the staff told them that they have not seen us...very scary experience.

Criminal charges have been filed and the manager is under investigation from the Police and tourisim boards.

A beautiful location and pristine setting was spoiled by our experience at this hotel...buyer beware.

Having not expected much from this simple and cheap old tea plantation house and bugalows, it turned out to be excellent. Beautiful setting with views of 5.5km peaks and down to the plantation. Very peaceful place and lovely people - the food just appeared when you sat down and was always very good. All the staff were very helpful and the manager Shidu was a great host and a wealth of information. We caught sight of some pretty large animal in the garden one night - the place was alive with wildlife - Shidu informed me that it was probably the leopard but not to worry because it ignores humans!!! I would recommend this place to anyone who fancies something different and memorable. Only down side was the mobile phone masts obscuring some of the amazing view.
