We spent two nights here and really enjoyed our stay. The accommodations are simple, yet clean bandas (African Cottages) with a few nice touches, like the bed turn down with a hot water bottle in the bed - cozy indeed!
The views to the gorilla inhabited mountains were outstanding and the Uganda Wildlife Authority registration points is a 15 minute walk away through a nice walk via a small village inhabited with some Batwa (pigmies).
The Southern part of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest is now home to the majority of the 300 plus gorillas that inhabit the Ugandan mountains (the remaining 3-360 are in Rwanda). We tracked the Nshongi group which was fateful indeed because they happened to be close to the UWA registration point (about 1 hour hike up the mountain).
It is the rainy season, but we where lucky to have sun during the tracking and had a skillful guide with radio connection to the gorilla trackers who find the group within 30 minutes our our ascent. There was a Spanish group that set off to another part of the mountain and spent 10 hours, got caught in torrential rains and found only one gorilla. We spent a round trip of 4 hours, got in before the rain and saw 7 (4 silver backs, 2 black backs and a baby) so we were very lucky indeed.
Word to the wise, select the right gorilla group to track and make sure you have good trackers/guides that have their radios charged up, we understand that the mis-hap with the Spanish was due to the lack of radio connections all due to a failed battery.
If you love wild Africa and animals, this is definitely a great place to visit. Not cheap but certainly well worth it!
PS - The owner is very hands on and gave one of our team a ride back to Kampala. Certainly a nice touch!
