As the first in the row of lodges that dot the main road leading to the park entrance, Engagi Lodge is still conveniently close to that entrance – but far enough to be exceptionally quiet at night. My wife and I spent only 2 nights here – and we were the only customers then. Some people may find it a bit spooky to sit alone in the lounge of the main building, surrounded by complete darkness – but we thought it was extremely quiet. Though the cottages are definitely not luxurious, they are well equipped, featuring everything you really need – even a soft sofa on your private veranda. Electricity is provided only during certain hours by a generator, as is common practice all over Uganda’s nature areas. Though there was only 1 lamp in our cottage, it produced an awful amount of light, probably comparable with 3 100W lamps, but I missed a writing desk to write my diary. I had to do this at one of the restaurant’s tables where there was much less light. The food here was the same like in so much Ugandan lodges: standard ‘international’ food, which means it is what everybody can eat but no-one really likes. It really is a pity curries aren’t more widely available in Uganda’s tourist lodges.
