“Experience local culture and tradition at Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2009

Located just to the south of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, the Nkuringo campsite is located on the top of a hill overlooking the village of Nkuringo with amazing views of the surrounding Bwindi forest and into DR Congo. There are several sleeping options to choose from. There are campsites to pitch your own tent as well as a bunkhouse with private rooms. I stayed in a lovely banda that had great views overlooking the countryside out the front door. The accommodation grounds are very clean and nicely maintained. I can’t say enough good things about the staff. Asigariyo, who runs the facilities, also served as my guide on a walking safari though the surrounding areas (http://www.nkuringowalkingsafaris.com/). He is extremely nice and informative, explaining all about the local wildlife and culture. He also identified every species of bird we encountered! Benson, the chef at the Nkuringo campsite, cooked delicious meals and even packed boxed lunches for my day trips to the surrounding areas. Looking back at my travels through Uganda, the time spent in Nkuringo produces my fondest memories. I highly recommend this accomodation to get off the beaten path and experience the local flavor of rural Uganda.

For those who have the opportunity (and luck) to travel to that part of the world, the Hammerkop Bunkhouse will provide for quite a unique and exceptional experience, which by all means you should definitely book into your trip, just by virtue of discovering the remote track from Buhoma to Kisoro, with an enjoyable stay in Nkuringo.

Whilst probably the most simple location/lodge where we stayed during our tour, it was also the spot which offered the most enjoyable evening, we left the place with the deep wish to turn back there again.

We stayed at Nkuringo Gorilla Campsite on a 3 day walk to Buhoma from Kisoro. We were warmly greated at the campsite and treated to a warm shower and fantastic performance from the Nkuringo youth group. The views from the campsite are breathtaking. Perched on top a mountain, views stretch over Volcanoes and rift vally on one side and the Bwinindi forest on the other. Accommodation and facilities are simple, but clean and functional. We had great time

We have just returned from a trip to Uganda. One of our stops was at the Nkuringo Campsite (for those looking for further information, we've posted a review on our full trip here: http://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowTopic-g319722-i10042-k1994933-l13856105-Trekking_from_Buhoma_to_Nkuringo_and_onto_Kisoro-Bwindi_Impenetrable_National_Park.html)

Overall the Campsite was just fantastic. It has everything you could want:

-A totally outgoing, helpful team, knowledgeable on all topics you'd anticipate (nature, conservation, culture, etc. etc.)

-Out-of-this-world views - the photos posted by the first reviewer are 100% what you should expect!

-Simple, no-nonsense rooms as you'd expect on a budget - but specklessly clean, and with hot water available

-Great food (if you're lucky with timing you may even get Swiss cheeses and meats imported by Robert, the owner!)

-A friendly local community (with whom you can knock around a football if you feel like it - don't expect to win though)

Overall a perfect place to stay on the top of Uganda, either for a night or several days to take in the rhythm of life there. Now that I'm back in "civilisation" I often think of coming back to the Campsite for a week or much, much longer...

Alexander & Marie

PS: we already said this in our other review, but we suggest getting in touch with the owner, Robert, directly for anything in Uganda - even for suggestions on your full trip there. He's the best thing that happened to us on this trip!
