“Nice and cozy”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 20, 2012 via mobile

Idwala is really an excellent place to be if you are looking for clean, cozy and nice place to stay in.
My room was very nice, comfortable, clean.
Perfect room for real privacy is room number 7.
Food was ok, would be perfect if the breakfast buffet has more varieties.

But in general it deserve to stay there.

Wonderful and unique setting. Amazing staff and personalized service. We would be raving about this hotel had we not had the unfortunate incident of finding two huge fishing spiders (one alive, one dead), inside our room. The staff pulled up all the stops to try to make it up to us and were extremely apollogetic about it. The bed and linen were beyond luxurious and the rooms' and bathrooms' decoration was exquisite.

Estimada Mariana,

Thank you for your feedback! We are very happy what you said about our Guest House, Staff and Service and are glad you liked Idwala. We also loved having you as our guests and were thrilled that you even came back!
What a shame about the spiders - we hope we can make up for this the next time you come and visit us.

Saludos cordiales desde Johannesburgo

I was part of a 16-person tour group that spent three nights at Idwala during March 2012. Over the years I have stayed in six other guest houses in the greater Johannesburg area and Idwala ranks #1 in overall service and comfort. However, their excellent service started before we even arrived when Jeannette answered some questions very promptly in the weeks before the trip. As has been described by others, the rooms are mostly rondavels, with two more contemporary rooms spread throughout some wonderfully kept gardens. The rooms had all the luxurious conveniences we could ask for and the bathrooms very spacious. Additionally, we felt safe at all times and the property is fenced in with a gate and guard on duty 24 hours/day. The breakfasts were your typical buffet with cereal, fresh fruit, variety of breads, some cold meats and cheese, fresh juice, hot beverages, and eggs/bacon/sausage made to order. The one dinner we had there was good and the choice was either beef fillet or kingklip fish. We did ask for an unexpected taxi ride to the nearby Cresta Mall -- this was organized in short-order and the price was reasonable. Perhaps the only issue to be aware of when staying here is the distance from the OR Tambo International Airport. We did this transfer four times, in the late afternoon and mid-morning, and it consistently took 45 minutes or longer (I suspect at certain times of day it can be shorter). However, in order to be safe, I would give yourself one hour for the transfer to the airport. In closing, Jeannette, Paul, Precious, George, and the rest of the staff did a truly excellent job hosting us, and when I'm looking to stay at a high-end guest house in Joburg in the future, this will be on the top of my list. BTW: They have a small conference facility (that we didn't use), and here is no fitness facility on-site but a transfer can be organized to a nearby gym (no one in our group did this).

Work has recently taken me to Johannesburg and as a result I've spent five weeks at the Idwala. It's a fantastic little place with a nice, tranquil atmosphere. Perfect for coming back to after a busy day - it felt like a holiday destination rather than a business hotel.

The rooms are great. As others have said before me, the beds are particularly comfortable. The bathrooms are well appointed and there's plenty of space in the rooms as well, which is good if you're staying for a while.

There's wifi coverage throughout the hotel and grounds as well so I was able to sit out while staying in touch with the family - very pleasant.

The chef/house manager Paul and his team work so hard to make you feel at home but without ever becoming overbearing. That's really important when you're staying somewhere for an extended period. The food is great and generally cooked to demand - Paul will usually ask what you want for dinner & what time you'll want it served. Even if you're the only guest nothing appears to be too much trouble. In fact the hardest thing is not eating three courses every night.

Tours & trips can be arranged by the hotel - just ask Jeanette. I took an enlightening trip around Soweto then onto the apartheid museum. It wasn't cheap (i was travelling alone so didn't have anyone to split the price with!) but the guide, Alfred, was excellent and provided a fascinating personal dialogue alongside pointing out the landmarks and sights.

The hotel is a little off the beaten track, situated in a nice residential district to the northwest of the city centre. However as all travel in Johannesburg is by car, this isn't a problem - you'll be getting a taxi or driving wherever you go.

Highly recommended. As and when I'm back in Joburg, be it for business or pleasure, I'll be stopping here.

We stayed for night at this amazing guest house because there were not connecting flights to fly to Sabi Sabi. We were greated by the owner uppon arrival, offered and drink and then showed to our room.

The hotel is very nice and clean, the room was big and very nicely decorated, the bathroom was spacious and clean.

The hotel restaurant was very good, eventhough there was only one person there in addition to us they still fed us, in Europe they would not have bothered and just closed the restaurant.

The only bad part is that we stayed there for only one night.

Paul the chef makes the most amazing evening meals, His steak and sauces were the best I have ever tasted, His fish was wonderful and veg cooked to perfection. All this and a wonderful smile.
Jeanette the owner makes you more than welcome and can assist you with any little extra ie taxi tours ect.
The garden is lovely to laze in, Only a small plunge pool and although not near the African market or places of interest a taxi can be arranged.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 30, 2011

We stayed here in November and enjoyed it. The property, like all the others around, is behind a security gate and an electric fence, but once inside it is reminiscent of a high quality game camp with separate thatched cottages dotted around the grounds. We stayed in Protea cottage which was nice with a little kitchen/dining/seating area and a big comfortable bed. However it was 35degC when we were there and there was no aircon in the room and it was uncomfortably hot at night - I made the mistake of leaving the windows open and suffered a few mosquito bites as a consequence.

The bar and dining area is large and nicely appointed, breakfast was good as was the service. We had dinner in the restaurant one night which was OK but we were the only people eating there so there was no atmosphere. The young lady who served us was obviously learning the job and served our white wine on a very warm evening without an ice bucket but she was so sweet we didn't have the heart to complain.

The guest house is near the Cresta shopping centre which has various dining options (the Greek restaurant there was good) and a wide variety of shops. The guest house has an arrangement with a driver and arranged a tour of Soweto, a trip to the Apartheid museum as well as transfers to Cresta and Sandton (and back), this is chargeable to your room and is reasonably priced.

I see from the Idwala web site that Protea cottage is advertised as being air conditioned - if it is then it's a welcome (and necessary) addition, if not then I would stay elsewhere.

Overall we liked it - it's a welcome change from hotels.
