“Very good experience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 28, 2013

We booked 2 nights stay at Budmarsh Country Lodge with the idea of treating ourselves to a bit of luxury. We were welcomed as soon as we parked our car and received welcoming drinks at reception. The staff was very friendly, showed us around and then to our room. Our room was one of the smaller ones, but well equipped and generally good quality. The room had underfloor heating making it very cosy for mid-winter. The hotel has a nice lounge area with large fireplace giving extra warmth. Coffee, tea and cookies always available!

The 6-course dinners were simply amazing. Very high attention to detail - it seems the chef took extra care to make each plate perfect. Every item on the plate was an adventure in taste - this is exactly what we expected and even more! The waiters were very friendly and professional, especially Jack who assisted us most of the time. The selection of wines were also very good. The breakfasts were good, but not really much more than you would get at a slightly above average hotel.

We also enjoyed the gardens - very peaceful with some birds giving a bit of life. My only suggestion - they have a few ponds, it would have given something more to the garden if they contained some fish, e.g koi?

Our only complaint would be on our room. The room had only a bath and no shower - this is understandable in a smaller room, but a flexible shower attachment could be added. It was difficult for my wife to wash her hair - she had to was her hair in the basin, which is not very comfortable. One other smallish complaint - on occasions there were some doors banging loudly. Perhaps a bit of foam cushioning would solve this.

But all in all we got exactly what we wanted - a luxury weekend away. We would certainly recommend Budmarsh Country Lodge and will return again!

Thank you for your positive response and we are glad you enjoyed the weekend! We appreciate the feedback and suggestions - especially the doors!

Unfortunately the weekend you visited us was completely full and the room that was available is the only room without a shower. Next time you visit we will upgrade you to our executive suites at our luxury suite price. See you soon!

We have stayed at Budmarsh before our recent trip in July 2013, and we were quite disappointed at how the lodge, which was a firm favorite of ours last year (Nov/Dec 2012) had suddenly seem to lose its sparkle in the winter. My fiancé had travelled all the way from the UK for a winter weekend breakaway, and we were very excited about our 2 night stay at Budmarsh. Unfortunately things were not as we remembered them... On arrival the previous year we had sparkling wine as a welcome gift in our room, which was a wonderful surprise but this year that had been omitted. Despite that we still loved the room, which was nr 15, the only problem being, it was right above the main dining room and we were kept awake by rowdy customers till after 12 pm every night. Then we booked to have dinner in the wine cellar, but when we arrived as booked at 19h00, the staff had seen to forget about us in there. The manager Jacob did come and apologies profusely after 30 mins, but I wondered why we had bothered to pay R250 extra to sit somewhere romantic when the service was better in the main dining area? There wasn't even a candle on the table! The food was amazing as always, and the chef went above and beyond all expectation with every meal. Overall our stay was pleasant, not what we expected but hopefully this is just a case of winter blues and if we return in Spring to South Africa, it will be much improved.

I took my fiance for a romantic night away, for his birthday at Budmarsh. From the moment we arrived the service was impeccable. Could not fault it at all.

Wonderful lunch in the courtyard, and bubbly on ice in the room as requested.

One comment would be that the venue is a little better suited to summer, with tiles etc everywhere, you lack a bit of cosyness.

Otherwise a great stay.

Winter is always a challenging time where we expect our guests to be cosy but need to balance the demands that hospitality has on energy and the environment. We try to keep our use on the earth's resources to a minimum. Always a challenge! But we do appreciate your excellent review - thank you! See you again in Summer!!!

Our family had a wonderful 2 night stay and, apart from the food which was as good as other people had written, including high tea in the wine cellar, what was most memorable for me was the people, and the service, from the time we arrived to a welcome from the reception staff to the staff who cleaned our rooms to our farewell - I am familiar with tiptoeing through the tulips, but never thought we would tiptoe through the Clivia - the shower in the courtyard was a highlight

I am not sure there's much more I can add, the previous reviews have covered all the bases! Budmarsh is the ideal country escape - an hour from Joburg (outside rush hours!!), located on a working farm with rolling lawns, well kept garden, views of the Magaliesberg, large comfy rooms, peace & quiet, great food, warm welcome. What more could one need?
I'm not sure it's 5 star but that doesn't matter; its the fine luxury experience one would expect at the rates charged.
If you need recharge your batteries, Budmarsh is a good place to do it!

We discovered this lovely little oasis in Magaliesburg last year (which is hidden on the other side of a field of cattle, past a stable and horse or two - and then voila what a find !)

We spent a Sunday there and had first class lunch outside on the verandah overlooking their beautiful gardens and enjoyed excellent service.

We told our friends about it but now with Budmarsh having just walked off with FOUR West Rand tourist awards for 2013 Fine Dining, Overall Restaurant Winner, Service Excellence and for 5 Star Accommodation, they may now believe us!

We were lucky enough to get the last room available for the Fathers Day weekend. This weekend is one of the few during the year when younger children are allowed to stay at Budmarsh. We had two rooms, joined by a short passage, both rooms were spacious, the main bedroom was huge.
We basically dined and dined and dined some more. Chef Chris obviously has an exceptional talent, the food was of an incredibly high standard. We dined inside as well as on the verandah and the kitchen were flexible enough to deliver courses to our room when the kids just wanted to chillax- which meant that my husband and I dined alone which was a nice change! The surrounding area is beautiful, although we could have easily stayed within the grounds, such is the peace and beauty of the place.
So why not five out of five? I have travelled extensively and am a tough critic! The Lodge is not usually available to children, so if they go to the effort of organizing a weekend for families I would hope that a children's menu option would be available. The food is so exquisite but it is not always suitable for younger palates, I am not suggesting nuggets and chips, however meat without a fancy dressing, a plate of fresh veggies and rice, plain old tomato soup. Please know that I am being very critical and this is meant more as a recommendation than as a complaint! If you are visiting Budmarsh with your family, it might be worth phoning ahead to request some plain food; the chef and manager are so attentive and flexible but also realistic and honest, I feel confident that if able to accommodate your request they will do so. The whole experience is wonderful, we all had a fantastic time and we enjoyed being together as a family without any distractions.

Thank you for your wonderful comments! We do apologise for not being more accommodating of your children's food tastes but your advice is most appreciated! Chef is amazing and our kitchen staff could have whipped up something more appropriate for them.

We look forward to seeing you again !!
