My wife and i shared our 4th anniversary in one of the wildernest cabins and it was great. Although you dont get a view of the landscape you forget that due to the serenity, wildlife and just the overall feeling of being away from it all. Waking up to the sounds of the birdlife is incredible and bush turkeys at your verandah is something to experience. Those who write terrible reviews about this place should realise that you are in the bush. Your going to get spider webs, dust and leaves. I will certainly be going back with my family and enjoy another dose of serenity. Give it a go but dont forget your in the bush.

Room Tip: Just take a trip and get away, all the properties look adequate and could most certainly accommodate...

The last time i stayed here was about 3 years ago & I chuckle when I read these most recent reviews. Obviously nothing has changed. My wife & I went up for a Wedding Anniversary. We stayed in one of the self contained cottages and when we arrived it hadn't yet been cleaned ! We were offered another cottage to wait in ( about 2 hours) until ours was ready. Once made up though, I have to say the cottage itself was beautiful. I guess it depends which cottage you book. We had brought our own food and wine with us for dinner as we didn't want to head all the way to their 'restaurant' on a dark winding track in the car ( too far too walk) - which we had been to a few years prior & was dissapointed in at the time. We did however head to the restaurant for breakfast, expecting a great cooked 'country' breakfast. I ended up with 2 basic pieces of cold toast with a lonely poached egg stuck on top of each. The coffee I ordered was like drinking warm milk. On checkout I raised the fact again our cottage hadn't been ready and the dissapointing breakfast, what followed was an argument with the owner. He gave us the breakfast for free though as compensation. Think twice before going. If you plan to go all self contained and book one of the nicer cottages with great views over the valley, you should have a nice stay. DO NOT however waste money at their restaurant or book any of their so called 'activities'.

We stayed in the bottlebrush house myself, husband and 4 children, we arrived and went into the reception and greeted by the owners we got our key and then were show where we would be staying. WOW the house was amazing it looked so clean and so cosy the kids were so excited to have a spa bath, every thing you neede was supplied, the kids were so excited to see ducks and chickens walking close to the house. The view from all three rooms was magical. We were out on the balcony and were so suprised to see wallaroos to come right up to us. The kids wanted to feed them one of the owners sons were waliking by and said we could bye some food for them which we did. The kids got to hand feed them and it was so nice to see them loving it. We were booked into the resturant for dinner that night and it was a really nice the food was great. Went for a horse ride on the 1 hr trail ride the view got better as we went into the bush and up to an amazing view of the valley, the kids had a pony ride and loved every minute of it our little girl wanted to keep one. We went into the reception area to ask about walks to go on and were given maps and told the best places to go see with the kids. The kids were very tiered after but loved the walks as much as myself and my husband. We were very happy with our stay and will be back to bottlebrush house in the summer to stay and see what this lovely place has to offer in summer the kids cant wait to come back and go for a horse ride and a swim

stayed in "Idelwild" superbly fitted out and top shelf inclusions, all the comforts of home and then some, decorator decor a truly blissfull family weekend, and then the wildlife, a totally engaging time , so many species of birds and exotic parrots and lots of furry friends, the bush turkeys are a scream, this is just the experience modern children need to be exposed to, electronic games just can't compete with the real things in life ! The air is crispy fresh and unpolluted, ordinary foods taste so much better. you can find some good organic produce if you fossic around the Dungog area. Mind you this is a top of the range BIG 3 bed 2 storeycabin with big spar room and billiards table as well as all mod con. electrics and 2 ensuites. There are much cheaper cabins that leave much to be desired but the old maxim "you only get what you pay for sure applies here"

stayed in the bottlebrush house (three bedrooms) for two nights to do some walking in the national park.

the house was adequate. we arrived late (9pm) and the place was cold, but we just didn't feel like lighting the fire and couldn't find the matches. the water pump had also not been turned on (but we didn't know it) and there was no water pressure to speak of. we asked the next morning and they said 'oh, the pump's not on'. would have been nice to have showers etc on arrival!

the kitchen is not really properly stocked. we had to ask for a chopping knife, and the one we received was blunt. there were only two big mugs and the rest of the cups were tiny. no potato peeler. the rest was okay.

fantastic hot shower and a lovely spa bath once the pump was on. bedrooms were fine.

there is a nice wood fire, but i think the flue needs cleaning as it was not possible to have the fire without a smoky room. and no additional heaters provided, either.

the sitting room is not really cosy and if we had more than three people there, we felt there would not be enough seating in the sitting room. light above dining table didn't seem to work.

the view is great and the ducks and chickens that come visiting are very sweet.

owners helpful enough. they let us have a late checkout on the sunday which was really welcome. they also let us cancel the third night's accommodation at short notice without penalty.

not enough info on the walks is available. we asked about a trail that was on the map they gave us but they didn't know anything about it.

so, maybe it's worth the money if you have six people there. but it's a 40 minute drive to most of the walks.

On the plus side: amazing views, wildlife (Roos, ducks, parrots, horses) come right to your cabin for our kids (3 and 5) to feed, which they loved.  Cabins were clean.

On the negative: cabins too basic, lacked some cooking utensils, fire burner didn't work properly so could not light a fire without smoking out room, and the description of some of the facilities on the website did not match the reality - eg. restaurant closed during the week, swimming pool pretty uninviting.

Basically agree with the general thrust of the mixed reviews below.  Not quite value for money, and I agree they should not charge in full before you check in.  But we had a good time despite this, largely because the location and views were amazing, and we were on holiday so pretty relaxed.  Owners were friendly/ helpful enough.

The nice stuff first. The view is great and the wallabies and cockatoos are cute.
The rest is a scam. The cottages are run down, dirty and need urgent repairs.
The owners clearly know this but refuse to do anything about it. They are more than willing to take your money though (before you arrive of course, it is part of their conditions). The advertising signs on the highway say the property is 'luxury accommodation', has a NRMA 4 star rating and has a licensed restaurant open 7 days. This is all false.
They have 2 ponies on the property which are in dire need of medical attention.
The owners write positive reviews under false names on Trip Advisor to mislead people into staying here, they take your money and do not give what they promise.
Please do not fall for it.
I'm not sure how they are allowed to operate like this.
