“A little bit of bliss in the forest”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 27, 2012

We had a lovely stay at the Margaret River Stone Cottages. They were neat and clean, very well looked after. Our stay was very comfortable. We stoked up the fireplace on the first day and should have eased off at about 8pm because by the time we went to bed, it was a bit warm the first night upstairs. We learnt our lesson night no. 2 & 3 and slept like a baby in the peace and quiet of the surrounding forest. Each chalet, approx 4 of them, are so well spaced apart that each one of them is very private and hidden from neighbours.
The only down side for us, is the property is pet friendly. Not that we dont like animals, we live in a built up area in the city surrounded by barking dogs, so we thought the forest break would be a bit of an escape from the everyday noise. Its. It not so much the dogs, its the irresponsible pet owners that assume everyone had bought their animals and let them run amok, barking, peeing on the next chalet door, letting them scratch at the door to come in, letting them run into the surrounding forest to take the daily dump. Thats up to the property owner of course to accept this, but we were fortunate there was only 2 bad dogs to put up with.

Room Tip: Dont stoke up the fire before going to bed, let it ease off for a couple of hours first.

We had a long weekend here and enjoyed it very much. Cottages are well looked after and are nicely fitted out. The kitchen has appliances and utensils you would expect. We plan to return with other family members.

Salve for a city-weary soul The cottages are clean, comfortable and spacious, with reverse cycle AC. Amazing value for money, considering the other options and what you get here - seclusion, peace and quiet, nature at your doorstep (we saw live wild kangaroos!!), your own kitchen and fireplace (not that we dared use it), two floors all your own, a backyard barbie if you wanted to use it... I could go on and on...

The top floor are the bedrooms - two queen beds plus a single, along with a WC and sink. The shower is on the ground floor, with the kitchen, living and dining areas. The stairs can be difficult for young kids and older folk, but if you're relatively fit and your kids aren't so young that they need to be watched all the time, then it should be fine.

It's altogether charming, and I would definitely choose to stay there again next time I'm in Margaret River.

My only suggestion to improve on things would be to provide free wifi (still a city-gal at the core) and a washer/dryer for laundry.

The cottages have not changed much since we visited last 15 or 16 years ago. But they are cleaner, much more insect free, and now have air-conditioning (which is needed in the hotter months -which could run from October to April inclusive). The insects were a serious problem on our last stay with huntsmen, and millipedes up to 10-15 cm long!

You will see kangaroos outside the cottage in the early morning, and even later in the morning (and evenings) in surrounding fields. On our last trip there was a group of big reds outside our cottage - delightful but also just a little scary!

If you come from the UK, you might expect a luxury room for the $187 ~ £123 price tag. It's not luxury, it it what you'd call rustic, but it is very comfortable, and is unfortunately what you get for that sort of price tag in Perth these days.

The location is wonderful. On a clear night you would have unparalleled views of the night skies. Unfortunately they were cloudy for the first time in yonks for our stay!

The other cottages are perhaps a little close for comfort, but the residents were all very courteous. They were there for peace and quiet and didn't interfere with the peacefulness of the location.

Margaret river is a bit like Peppermint Grove of the south, but it's nevertheless a nice place.

I'd recommend Laurance winery if you have kids. Many of the other good vineyard restaurants (like Brookland Valley) do not have kid-friendly menus.

Room Tip: All the cottages are good.

We didn't arrive until approx 7.30pm so it was dark, and driving down the windy country lanes in pitch black which felt like in the middle of nowhere was somewhat a little daunting. Then you see the cottage lights. As soon as we walked through the door, I was smitten!
Gorgeous, cosy first night, we stayed in cottage 1 and not sure if all the cottages have them but there is a secret panel to find where treasures are left - enjoy the search :) It made this married couple giggle and feel like kids again seeing who could find it first (I lost).
In the morning we sat out the back with our cuppa tea and breakfast and you can hear the roo's bouncing about and we managed to see a few heads popping up, same goes for at night and across in the cattle fields there will be a lot of roo's for you to go and see.
Two nights were not enough and I can't wait to return and spend a week with the dogs next time. Its home from home, and amazing to be in the middle of the forest with nature!

Fantastic place to stay if you want to get away from the city life.

What better then sitting out the back of your room with a glass of wine over looking the beautiful Jarrah Forrest.

My partner and i stayed for 4 nights and would recommend these cottages tom anyone.

We were looking for a pet-friendly place in Margaret River for a weekend away, and found it! Greeted with a welcome note on the door (always a nice touch!), the double-storey cottage was very well stocked with all that you need and having a fenced outdoor area was great for the dog.

Great location, nice and quiet and absolutely surrounded by natural bushland.
