Apart from Gimbals in Sowerby Bridge, and Aux Delices in Mytholmroyd, the upper Calder Valley is a bit of a desert when it comes to decent restaurants.
Fortunately, Aux Delices is a beacon in this darkness! It is a small and cosy restaurant/bistro with a lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Phil (on the stoves) and Carole (front of house) used to own the Hinchcliffe Inn in Crag Vale before selling up. However, it was not long before retirement became too boring and Phil joined Carole in her new venture at Aux Delices.
The menu is not too large, which means it is freshly cooked. And although it is not over-adventurous, there is an interesting twist to many dishes.
We have dined here perhaps a dozen times over the last 2 years, and I can honestly say that we have never been disappointed, and I have always come away thinking it was good value. It is good food, well cooked, well presented and served with a smile. What more can you ask!
My only (and slight) criticism would be that the wine list has become somewhat "ordinary", with mostly fairly uninteresting and very average quality wines that you find too often these days in pubs and restaurants. Come on Phil and Carole - you can do better than this! get yourselves along to your local wine merchant and steer clear of the "trade wines".
