“Good but not great”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed March 31, 2014

There are a lot of really good things about this hotel: it is THE perfect location; it is beautiful inside and out with a fantastic sitting area off of the lobby. I thought the breakfast buffet was fantastic. The rooms are very nice and comfortable and the entire hotel has recently been renovated. But there are some details leaving it short of 5 stars. The air conditioners, apparently in all the rooms, don't seem to work so the rooms seem warm and stuffy to me. We called three times for ice and it never came although each time we were assured it was coming right up. There aren't enough people to register and check people out - only one that I ever saw- which means there are often lines especially at the busy times. Finally, I couldn't find the restaurant Al Iwan on TripAdvisor so will review it here. It was bad. Nice decor and nice menu with waiters that try, but bad food. WAY over cooked lamb, all their fish is frozen and tasteless. In our table of five they forgot to put in one of the orders so we ate while she watched and then hers came, finally (after we inquired) when we were done and it still wasn't what she ordered. That restaurant is in dire need of a manager that knows what they're doing.

We stayed here for a week and could not have been more pleased with our choice of hotel. We chose it initially because the location is ideal, right across from the Archeological Park Visitors' Centre, and after a long day's sightseeing we knew we'd be glad of the hotel's pool and sauna. With five stars, we expected the Moevenpick would be a pleasant place to stay but it exceeded all our expectations. They are highly attentive to guests' comfort. We arrived in our room to a welcome bottle of wine, mineral water, a platter of fresh fruit, dates and chocolates accompanied by a handwritten note hoping we would enjoy our stay. Our room was very comfortable - king size bed, a balcony, robes, slippers, hairdryer, complimentary mini bar, promptly cleaned while we were at breakfast, then bed turned down in the evening, with the cleaners stopping to check if we needed fresh towels or more toiletries, bottled water, etc. Food in the buffet restaurant is excellent, with a huge array of pastries, pancakes, waffles, fruit, and eggs cooked to order, while dinner was a vast selection of delicious mezze, salads and hot dishes, and puddings. There are small touches, such as the help- yourself tea table offering fresh mint leaves soaking in a bowl of water for mint tea. The staff were charming and keen to look after us, but we found this was typical of most people who constantly greeted us with " You are welcome in Jordan." The hotel can arrange taxis to and from the airport in Amman and probably anything else a guest requires. Beautifully furnished with lovely public rooms and fountains. Highly recommend.

HBL

Room Tip: We were very happy with room 146, can't comment on other rooms.

This hotel is located next to the door of the visitors centre. This may not look like a great plus at the beginning of the day, but after a long day walking up and down, discovering the amazing hills of Petra, every extra step becomes painful. Also, it's perfectly located to have a drink at The Cave, one of the few places worths going to at night.
The hotel focuses mainly at groups, offering big buffets for dinner, so the restaurant a la carte is very quiet (quiet=boring) and not specially interesting.
Wifi is included, but at peak hours it may be difficult to connect.
Breakfast is just ok, and the rooms are clean but beds are not very comfortable.
Since most travellers will not stay longer than a couple of nights, this place is good enough.

this hotel arranged transport from airport to Petra, then onwards to their hotel in the Dead Sea and so made the transfers seamless and stress free from start to finish. The hotel is very close to the entrance to Petra which is a bonus when you've spent all day walking The breakfasts were buffet style, with plenty of choice and included local Jordanian food if you so wished. The restaurants give a choice to suit all tastes and are of good quality. The staff were all very welcoming, nothing was too much trouble and they helped to make our stay very enjoyable.

Moevenpick is right outside the main entrance to Petra. Although once you enter the hotel, you may just want to stay there. There is a "double lobby" -- a small one with a small fountain where you check in and can get luggage service and then, through a doorway, a larger lobby and semi-separate bar area where you can relax, and also order coffee/tea, drinks \non-alcoholic too) and ice cream. There are interesting chandeliers and furniture throughout. Staff members are multi-lingual. Skills in English range from fluent to knowing pleasantries. Upon arrival we were greeted by a waitress who gave us an apple juice. Upon check in we found out the mini bar was complimentary (a selection of drinks and a few snacks). The person who checked us in, Muhammad, set a high bar for other staff members to live up to -- and they did. The included hot breakfast buffet has Continental, Arabic/eastern and American choices - and all good! The outdoor pool is large enough to do laps (if only one or two are in the pool). It gets a bit chilly when the sun is not overhead, but it's doable. The gym has several cardio pieces and weights. Both are open 6 a.m. - 10 p.m. There is a steam room too, and changing areas for men and women. Wi-fi is free the rooms and there is a biz center on the main floor. One night, from 5 - 6 p.m., there was a chocolate sampling in the larger lobby. So good! It sounded as if they have this "sweet hour" each night with different choice, although double check because I'm not sure if I understood that correctly. We ordered a mezza in the tea room (the same available in the restaurant) and we liked it. There are several gift shops, mini grocery stores and restaurants around the corner from the hotel. A larger downtown is an uphill walk of maybe 30 mins. There are not sidewalks for part of the walk, so watch out for traffic if you go. Oh - the toiletries are great: shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bar hand soap. |And a clothes drying line in the shower if you need to rinse out a few things. With the desert air, things dry quickly. TV has stations in Arabic, English, Russian, French and Italian. There are also a few gift shops in the hotel. We are at the end of our stay, so assuming we have no issues at checkout, we definitely will chose this hotel in the future. Our experience here made us decide to alter our plans and stay overnight at another Moevenpick on this trip. Here's hoping it's as good!

Room Tip: We had some traffic noise, but it didn't keep us up. You may want to ask for a room in the back...

I recently stayed at the Movenpick with my family in 2 rooms. The rooms are small and do not have much of a view. There are nice bath products and there is turn-down service. There is a complimentary min-bar that is stocked daily. The rooms are quiet and you will get a good night sleep. There are multiple restaurants on site, though the food is average. The gourmet restaurant was very good (reserve early).

Pros: At the entrance to Petra which is helpful after a long day. (BTW - in Petra eat at the Crowne Basin - nice buffet); the servers/restaurant staff were very nice; Most people stay here.

Cons: minimal view; food was average (except for the Gourmet restaurant)

The Marriott Petra is a bit further on the road, but may be a good option - terrific views.

Room Tip: Would ask for a larger room; make a reservation for the gourmet restaurant early

We enjoyed our stay at the Moevenpick Petra. The room and bathroom were clean and it is literally across the street from the entrance to Petra. There was free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, you just needed to get a code from the front desk (and they were happy to give out additional codes if you needed them for multiple devices). The breakfast was great with a huge selection including an omelette station. The lounge off the lobby is really nice for relaxing and having a drink or coffee. We ate at a restaurant outside the hotel and wanted to have dessert and coffee in the hotel. The waiter brought us a selection of desserts from the restaurant's buffet--very accommodating. I would definitely stay here again when visiting Petra.
