“Review of restaurant only”

Didn't stay in the hotel but ate in the Al Iwan restaurant here. You need to book the day before if eating before 9 even though when we went it was half empty. The food was very good, the best we had in Jordan, though the service was incredibly slow (just on 3 hours for 3 courses). It is certainly not cheap, £250 for 4 people, although 2 bottles of wine at £30+ per bottle didn't help. Probably the best food in Petra if you are not worried about budget.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 21, 2013

We made a summer holidays tour in Jordan, and the Movenpick Petra has been our Hotel of choice for two days in Petra.

Location

The best location for a visit to the Petra area. It is just in front of the monumental complex, a five minutes walking distance to the entrance.

Lobby

Really small and just two people to attend such a busy area. It is understandable that they always look under pressure, although kind and professional.

Rooms

We had booked a double room with king size bed. When we entered into the room we saw two single beds and after a call to the concierge a maintenance guy came and put them together. It is a solution, but two single beds together doesn’t mean a king size.

The room was really disappointing for “the supposed to be” luxury hotel in Petra. It lacked of the quality demanded to a five star hotel, clean but no details and vulgar decoration more typical of a medium standard airport hotel.

Beds

Just Fine, the bed was nothing extraordinary but enough for a comfortable sleep after a tough day climbing up and down in Petra. Pillows were low and we didn’t find a pillow menu.
The duvet was fine too, nothing remarkable.

Bathroom

Small and functional, as the rest of the hotel it lacked of the necessary details and quality of a five star hotel. Again, the feeling was of a medium standard airport hotel.

Food

Breakfast and dinner was a buffet option. We saw some other rooms prepared for á la carte but nobody there and it looked more as a decoration than a real dining option.

Breakfast and dinner buffet was not really different in choices but changing the recipes more appropriate to the day time. As vegetarians there were some cold options as salads but very few in hot preparations: white boiled rice and spaghetti with tomato.

Just an anecdote: We asked for some fruit as a dessert and the answer initially was that there was no fruit available. We answered that it is inconceivable that a five stars hotel has no fresh fruit, and they brought one kiwi, just one!! We asked for another one (we were two) and after fifteen minutes they brought us the other one.

On the contrary, they offered five or six different sweets, cakes options.

About the service: terrible. It took them twenty minutes to bring us two beers (and this happened the two days we stayed in Petra) in a half empty dinning lounge , the waiters were rude with the service and cleaning even when you were still having your dinner or enjoying the end of your beer.

In general, food and service was closer to a communal meal or the army facilities than a five star Movenpick.

Conclusion

We have been in other four and five star Movenpick Hotels and I think this is a good and reliable brand, but the one in Petra show the quality of a low four or even three stars Hotel.

However, as the other Hotels locations are miserable (and we were told by other travellers that uphill hotels did not even have plugs to reload batteries), and if you want the comfort of being at a walking distance to the marvellous Petra area you will come here.

As it happens where demand is infinite, it seems as if they seem not to care about quality standards and don’t invest nor money nor efforts.

And about the price? No surprises, referred to the other Hotel options you pay a five stars quality but this is not definitely what you receive in exchange.

Room Tip: Nothing remarkable.

We liked this hotel very much. The lobby and the public spaces are absolutely beautiful. The ceilings are works of art and the feel is quietly elegant. The lounge down stairs is very nice; we enjoyed evening cocktails there before moving up stairs to the outdoor dining area. The outdoor dining staff was wonderful and the food was excellent. We liked it so much, we ate there every evening we were there. The staff was just amazing. The evenings were chilly, but the staff provided warm blankets that we eagerly accepted.

Our room was not quite as beautiful as the common areas, but it was clean and comfortable.

I would recommend this hotel and would stay there again.

Right across the street from the entrance to Petra. Check in was quick and the rooms were nice. The hotel has some great restaurants-the BBQ terrace restaurant is well worth a visit. Staff were very friendly and always willing to help. Only minor negative is that in our room, the bathroom door stop is right in the middle of where you exit the bathtub-think I stepped on it every time I got out. But only a minor point, I would still stay at this hotel again and would recommend people stay here.

There's no doubt that the Movenpick Petra has a stunning lobby and cafe decor. But once you pass that and enter the rooms or even the lobby toilets then you wonder if you've walked through a wormhole into a 70s run down motel. Really, really disappointing stuff. The room decor looks very cheap. The toiletries are very basic. Our bathroom had lots of mouldy grout and was a rhetro pink marble colour that really looked horrendous when you think of how much you're paying per night for this place. You pay the price of luxury and get a room that even looks substandard for a midmarket audience. At breakfast on both mornings we were there, the staff were grumpy and pretty unwilling to help/serve. The omelet we ordered was undercooked and we had to take it back. There were very few fruit options and all the pastries tasted stale. Even the lift in the hotel crawled to an outdated beat!

To give credit where credit's due - the security and bell staff were lovely, all very friendly. One of the receptionists and the lady behind the ice cream bar was great as well. The rest of the hotel could take come lessons from them.

The location of this hotel is excellent for visiting Petra but then the highly rated Petra Moon hotel is right behind it and a lot cheaper!

This property could compete in any 4-star market but when you consider it is in the middle of the desert, it is a superior, luxury hotel. Having a swimming pool in a land-locked country where people have limited water is extremely extravagant.

I've stayed here twice - in 2009 with my young family and 2013 with friends. I've always loved the hotel with its beautiful, Arabic-inspired interior. I think the service has improved a lot since our last visit. The hotel seems cleaner and appears to have been recently renovated. The room interiors are nicer. We had a triple room and three beds were prepared for our arrival. Bottled water and mini-bar were gratis. The staff was super pleasant, and either I have changed, or their English has improved.

The breakfast buffet is a typical 4-star affair with everything you could want. I give it 4-star when comparing to Dubai hotels. Dairy and wheat allergies can be a bit challenging when traveling. Yogurt and wheat bulgar are a staple in Mid-East cooking.

We also ate on the deck and had the grill. It was good and the dining under the night sky was so beautiful. Wine and imported food is very expensive in Jordan.

You literally walk out the Movenpick gate and cross the street to the Petra Visitor Center entrance. I don't know why the taxi drivers called out to us for a ride when we were right there - perhaps they were hoping.

We looked at other, non-chain hotels but our Jordanian friends recommended staying here as the others were not as well-maintained. After a day trekking through dirt and riding donkeys, a nice shower and toasting the experience with a glass of wine under the stars is worth it.

The hotel charges if you want to stay after 12:00. We drove to Madaba after our second day at Petra. Instead of keeping the room, the bell captain held our bags. When we returned from Petra covered in red dust, we used the spa showers and hairdryers before starting our drive north.

Note there is an ATM in the lobby. It only gives out 50JD bills, rather a nuisance since you need small change (1s and 5s) during the day.

Room Tip: We overlooked the pool. It was quiet.

The Movenpick in Petra was definitely the best hotel of our entire stay in Jordan. Rania really made our stay amazing, she is one of the nicest and most efficient people I have seen in the hotel industry. She went out of her way to organize connecting rooms and even called the Movenpick Dead Sea resort to make sure we had the rooms we wanted there. The location is amazing and after a tiring day in Petra it is lovely to know that a cool room and shower are only a few steps away.
