“Feynan EcoLodge”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 16, 2013

Wonderful visit to this very very special place.
You need perseverance to get there, but it is so worth it.
Excellent service from friendly, knowledgeable staff
The food was delicious. Just imagine a completely candlelit hotel (except kitchen and bathrooms)
as we loaded our plates with vegetarian fare and then ate outside under the stars.
The guide, Mohammed, was excellent and made our half day hike up the river bed and beyond very special.
Could not have been a more enjoyable stay.
Hope to go back again next year.

This Ecolodge is without any doubt something special. The candles in the evening, the fantastic design, the remoteness and the delicious food are outstanding. The rooms are basic with a small bathroom (toilet and shower). The bed is covered by a mosquito net and comfortable. No five star hotel, but I think no one would expect this in an Ecolodge.

We arrived with our car at the reception where immediately a transport to the lodge was arranged. The check in was quick and friendly.

Our room was unfortunately above the dining area, where a group of people celebrated a family reunion until the middle of the night, so that we had to close the window. Not very convenient, considering the temperatures inside. No one of the staff cared about this, although we found in our room a book of rules which included explicitly the allowed times for all the areas in the lodge.

On our first evening we were told to speak to the guide after the dinner, to arrange to program for the next day. Unfortunately no one showed up, so we asked about the guide at the reception. We were told to go to the roof, where no one was there. It took over 30 minutes of waiting until the guide was found. Asked for the reason for his delay, he told us that he was busy with all the guests. Weird, because beside us there were only 3 other people in the lodge (The big family left early in the morning the next day). Actually the guide was really busy with one girl sitting outside and speaking to her for hours.

On the next day we arranged a transport to Dana for a walk. We were told to be ready at eight, so we hurried at the breakfast. While our driver was already there, nothing else was prepared. We were three times asked for our plans and if we ordered a lunch package for the walk, which we of course have done the day before. It took 20 minutes until the lunch package was ready. Time the driver and we had to wait, for no good reason.

After our bad experiences the first 12 hours fortunately everything changed positively. The transport to Dana (around 3 hours) was extremely fun, with a guy who didn't speak English, but who was extremely hospitable and who tried to communicate with arms and legs with us. The new guide in the evening was also extremely nice and informative. Don’t forget to join the free sunset hike and the stargaze on the roof!

In conclusion the organisation in the lodge needs a lot of improvement, also the staff could be attentive to their own rules. Furthermore the whole experience depends on the people who are currently in the lodge, so cross fingers for less people and nice staff. We would give this unique experience a second chance!

Room Tip: try to avoid the room over the dining area

At the Dead Sea highway look for kilometer sign 131 to enter the road to the Feyan Ecolodge. After 20 km you are able to park you car at a ‘reception centre’ and the local Bedouins will bring you in their very old pick ups in half a hour over a bumpy road to the (non alcohol) lodge, located in the middle of nowhere. The lodge is run by local Bedouins under the auspices of the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature. It’s a special designed place with a relaxed atmosphere. Not a hotel feeling (we carried our luggage in, out and upstairs). There is no real service by the lodge staff. Also no explanation was given about tours or whatever. We had to ask and find our way....

The rooms are nicely decorated in a romantic style. Bathroom with a shower (cold water only) and a small sink. Candles everywhere for the evenings (as there is no electricity in the evening, except in the bathrooms). Hard bed with comfortable cover. We, however, felt that the rooms and the non public spaces could need more cleaning.

Breakfast and dinner are presented in the form of a vegetarian buffet. Nice but not impressive. There is a free, good functioning WIFI connection the ‘lobby’.

Different hikes/biking options are offered. We enjoyed the free sun set hike and the half day hike. Good explanation during the trip, good balance between being too touristy and respect for local environment. Also a nice opportunity to meet and talk to other guests.

We payed 180 euro for one night (breakfast and dinner included) which we think is somewhat overpriced but as a whole we enjoyed the experience.

I live in the desert in Israel, so the idea and the view is not new for me. I came with my brother and his wife who live in The Netherlands and they really loved the place (I liked it very much as well).
The staff is very kind and patient. The rooms are nice but basic. To my opinion they should put more candles in the room as it is very dark. The food was excellent, vegetarian and lots of dishes to choose from. They indeed have a problem with flies, and I guess it might be because they should clean the terrace (where the food was served) more often.
The stargazing on the roof was great. The second day my sister-in-law did the the so-called "bedouine experience" where they visited 3 different bedouine families who showed some things of their lives in the desert. It was very nice. My brother and myself had a great hike in a most beautiful wadi (Wadi Ghwar) for about 4 hours. We like the Feynan Ecolodge and recommend it when you want to stay in a different kind of accomodation.

WARNING:

-- TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE
-- TERRIBLE FOOD
-- TERRIBLE FOR ASMA
-- TERRIBLE LOCATION
-- HORRIBLE LOCALS
-- OVER PRICED

Over priced rubbish.... you pay lots to get nothing.

Customer service was vile.

Beware the the hidden TAX for getting in a out of the lodge - you have to pay an extortionate amount to get driven the last few miles in a nasty run down 4x4 because in the 8 years they have been running the lodge they cannot be bothered to build a road to the lodge.

We traveled all over Jordan and saw some amazing scenery, yet the Feynan Ecolodge is in a grubby little ditch with terrible views and infested with flies.

The food was very poor, tasteless and no meat! -- we had a better meal cooked on a camp fire in the desert.

No alcohol or shisha - talk about sucking the fun out of a holiday.

No electricity, the lodge was terribly lit. They used candles (so small) they hardly lit the way - so bring your flashlight - If you have asma you will suffer from the candle smoke

The website talks about the many activities, but once your stuck there you realise you have to do what they arrange, not what you would like to do.

Everyone in Jordan is friendly and nice, apart from the people at Feynan Ecolodge and the locals near by it seems.

There are SO many nicer places to visit in Jordan!

AVOID at all costs....

This is a unique place where you can experience the desert in an "eco" way, which means very limited electricity and wifi, pretty candlelight, no tv of course, and an interesting menu of vegetarian food vast in quantity and quality. But it is expensive, and we thought there should be room service (ie bed should be made daily and room cleaned, we had dustballs in our room). Also the flies around the food were a bit of a problem, and there should be more candles in the public areas especially the stairways and key areas of room doors. We also had an unhealthy smell emanating from the bathroom. But our experiences of stargazing and the sunset walk were highlights, especially Suleiman who genuinely shares his life story in the area. To be recommended.

Room Tip: we had a lovely room with a little balcony.

This is an amazing and unique haven that just has to be experienced first hand. The only down side was the loud german group what had no respect for the quiet and silence that should come with visiting this serene and breath taking secluded eco friendly pearl. I´ll be back and bring my family.

Room Tip: The deluxe rooms are soo worth the extra cost and stay for at least 2 nights. Don´t miss stargazing...
