“Very cool hotel, friendly staff, leukwarm meals. Ski resort rev.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 21, 2011

Alright travelers from around the world. I see you are interested in Hotel Bansko.
It's a nice , clean place to stay with the friendly staff on hand. If you are not a fussy person, don't have a huge chip on your shoulder and you're not used to staying in a 5 * hotel you will be fully satisfied with this place.

Before I traveled to Bulgaria, I myself, came on here to read all of the reviews and stuff. I am happy to report that the majority of them are inadequate . Either things have drastically changed or haters possibly lied about this facility. I stayed at the hotel in January 2011 and this review is as FRESH as it can get for this year's season.

The facts: The rooms are clean and cosy. Room svc does an excellent job at keeping the hotel up to par, other staff is always smiling and ready to assist. Even though their English skills are very poor. Don't worry about it ,this is how things are in and around of Bansko. Everywhere I went people had similar low ability to communicate in international language that originated in the british isles. I could only wish the receptionist could do a better at speaking ,but communication was established at the basic level.
Rooms are are very warm, and you can regulate the room temperature yourself .
Our room had wainscot panels . Very nice indeed :)
Meals are leukwarm, but tasty . ( you ppl gotta understand that you are visiting another country where food differs from what you are used to at home ). It's definitely not dog chow nor it is fine dining, but it's GOOD for most travelers.
It's very annoying that when you want to eat a hot steamy meal after full day of sking, you are bound to have it served cold .We went out to eat to local Mexana ( bulgarian folk restaurant) and the food was really good , but guess what ? phucking cold again... Go figure it out. I can't .
I think it's Bansko's way of dining.
What's more ? SKibus is punctual. Pool and the saunas are awesome, I highly recommend having a massage done at the parlor at the poolside. It's revitalizes your legs and entire bodies after a day on a mountain. The massage therapists are highly skilled in what they're doing.

Overall I would definitely recommend this hotel to any of my friends, family, and If I ever went to Bansko again, I'd be happy to stay at this hotel again :)

Bansko ski resort review:
Nice modern mountain. Temperatures are little below 0 or just above it.
Gondola line is a at least 45 min wait in the morning. The rest of the lifs are going quick. Icy conditions from all the southern sun melting the snow. Fresh man made snow is blown overnight. The slopes are prepped up and ready to go. Then again, due to the heavy sunlight activity the snow melts during the day and turns into ice at night.
Medium ski conditions. Lot's of sunshine tho. Some of the trails are mismarked in regards to difficulty level. If you are an inexperienced skier, watch out for the trail no.5 :P
It runs from top of the mtn , it's very steep, has moguls and ice to cover it all :) It's marked in blue --> beginner on the maps:) If you are an experienced skier like me, you'll love it :) Well, minus the ice anyway. I find it ludicrous for trails to be marked in different colors on the paper map and on the big billboard map. Check it out yourself and get back to me with the trails you found to be in two different colors.

Would I go there again ? Yeah I think I would :)

Sorry no photos :( Lost my camera the last day with lot's of pix and flix in it. Maybe you found it ? It was Cannon :)
Have fun :)

Room and hotel overall was spotless. Staff were friendly and helped out with directions, safety deposit boxes and ex-changing money etc. Food was not bad at all have to be early for breakfast if not will have less choice but for what we paid food was as we expected. Bansko is easy to get around, most things are near the hotel, did not need any taxis. Hotel bus was reliable and as frequent as we needed it to be. Will def be back.

Hotel bansko will classify as a 2 star in america- no more...The best bits are the family rooms are a apartment hotel and spacious and the pool is good for european standard. The not so bits are the staff- very surely, receptionist bordering on poor communication- possibly rude , sarcastic, lack of hospitaity and non helpful .Food is appalingly poor here. dont even try to visit the PM dinners!! you will be shocked - worse than aerofloat airlines food served in 1980's- possibly served same food over 3 -4 days daily - careful.

2 opposing forces- excellent resort -begginers for skiing and excelent snow in january with good qulaity ski kit and lifts and gondola- but local business and people have not been trained to welcome tourists - they feell you are a burden onthem!!.Rudeness is common on ski lifts -people from the old soviet block do not beleive in queeing or being polite in a crowd- need to push to move on lifts etc.The nursery ski center on thge top of slope have rather rude staff.. pauline- nursery assistant- - thats what she calls her self loves to insult British parents (perhaps the behaviour is not insulting in their culture)- whilst svetlana is relatively polite in the centre.Ski school chaotic, cheap, poor standard, ,and rude instructors- not really comparable elsewhere( went with balkan holidays who are no better either).Beware of taxi drivers who openly state if you speak engish you will be charged 3 times the price of that charged to a local and can be nasty about it and pizza companies who do the same (£18 for a 14" take away pizza)- let you deceide -good luck

Not a place i would return again as its ashame as the snow and the lift system were of a high standard.

Me and two friends stayed at the Hotel Bansko for a week's skiing with Balkan Holidays, and found the Hotel to be more than OK.

Pro's: Hotel was modern and clean. Not an English 4-star, I would suggest 3-star. Our twin room was spacious and comfortable, with a very good, hot shower. Swimming pool was great, didn't use the Gym but looked well equipped. Free Hotel Shuttle Bus ran every half-hour from the hotel to the Ski Hire and Gondola Station. Staff were always helpful and pleasant, very security concious, housekeeping made a good job of the rooms every day. Hotel was first drop-off from the run from Sofia airport, 15-20mins walk from Gondola Station. Small supermarket located less than 5mins away.

Cons: Food - breakfast is bascially a choice of scrambled egg in various guises, dinner is tolerable. Dinner is typical Bulgarian food, consisting of rice, pork, chicken, pickled vegetables, sausages, and soups. It was OK, but wouldn't want to eat it for more than 3 days (ate out rest of the time). I would advise going self-catering if possible and eating out. Some lads we met on holiday suffered from sickness and diarohhea, and put it down to the food and / or tap water - but to be fair, we were OK on both fronts. Bed was not very comfortable, my best nights sleep came after a heavy bar crawl post a hard days skiing!

For our purpose, which was somewhere to crash after a hard days skiing and then get ready for the evenings activities, it was ideal. Probably pick somewhere else if I was to take a partner, but it does not deserve the incredibly poor reviews posted I guess by my very narrow minded countrymen!

We booked this hotel as we got a free ski pack included, if you manage this too it is bearable, but expect to eat out. The breakfast is ok, the dinner is awful, even if you think you can eat anything - as long as it tastes like dishwater. No fruit, poor salad, mystery meat, tasteless everything. Surly staff, no water, no coffee, no tea making facility. No shower curtains, water all over bathroom floors. Beds comfortable, rooms clean, chambermaid fine. We would go back but only if we got the free ski deal and would eat out every night.

The Hotel Bansko. It is a clean hotel with a good pool, sauna, gym and bar. It does have feather pillows for those who are allergic. Warning do not leave any ski equipment in the Ski storage room. There where thefts of equipment throughout the week. Keep all gear in your rooms and your money and passports in the safe.

The main thing with the hotel and from speaking to other travellers other hotels is the food. You will not be eating evening meals there for more than a couple of days. I`m not a fussy man and will eat most things if I like it or not. But when your meal consists of dry bread, rice, and meat of unknown origin I had to give up and eat in the many restaurants on offer.

Also check the mini bar on arrival to your room as another party got accused of taking from it.

This is a very pleasant hotel set on the main road up to the town.First to be dropped off the coach and last to be picked up. 3 hrs from Sofia airport at best.
The hotel was clean and pleasant and nothing spoiled our stay there once we got to grips with the regiemes.
It is kinda in two halves with the reception and lobby bar in the centre. We stayed up hill as it were, smaller to the dowhill side, which has the res. less rooms on each floor only 8! opp. end to the swimming pool; which we were well impressed with for it size, warmth and set up, free towels, changing rooms, loungers, two saunas, hot showers and a gym and table tennis room (best indoor pool in any hotel we've stayed so far!) .
The lobby bar is cosy with lots of little areas to sit on lovely leather sofas, please note Smoking is still allowed indoors in Bulgaria so there are some designated non smoking areas in reverse to what you'd expect! ie the main area is smoking! only down side to this area is it needs an open fire ......well winter time of course! drinks prices are same as home if a little cheaper.....Tea is ridiculously expensive! £2.50 at Breakfast coffee is free there. Take your kettle!!
The restaurant is a "free for all" depending which crowd is there, getting better as you find your feet thru your stay.....Food is nothing special, but they do supply a micro wave to re heat food. NB Bulgarians have their food warm!!!! once you know this it's easy to work around. We usually eat cornflakes for breakie so anything more to us is fine and we're not greedy! Sauage and egg, cold meats, bread, toaster etc etc etc is all there.I was partial to toasted cheese and sauage i made for myself, the cheese is fab.
Dinners are much the same with a fair selection but again for us we only ever cook A dinner at home so a choice of four is ample, and yes there is often chips!!
Drinks at night in the res. are expensive for wine but ok for a beer.
The rooms are v.good, well equiped, clean and serviced every day with fresh towels so leave yours at home and save weight.Mini bar is expensive, tell the kids not to touch they 're v.keen on departure......Baths are deep and showers powerful ....lashings of hot water all day.
Please note If you try steal the super duper fluffy over sized yet cuddly bear towelling dressing gowns ...........they call in the police and delay the whole coach departure and make an example of you ! we had to wait an hour at 4 am ....We were not pleased!!!!!!!!!!but it's not the hotels fault !
The site of the hotel is just ok .A taxi to the gondala is only 5 lev £2.50 between four that's nowt and the reception will ring and order you one to arrive in 2mins which was very nice service. the hotels bus service is adequate starting at 8.30 only but if you want to be the first to ski book a taxi. 100yds uphill from hotel is a super cheap 24 hr supermarket ...yippee! and above that is a bar called the DiamondPub good food english staff , sorry, but £1.75 a pint is great and happy hours all the time! G&T's in good measures £2.
To walk up to town is a nice stroll 10/15mins, 2 in a taxi and only 3 lev.
The old town, very nice with lots of bars and Mexhana restaurants ( that's Grills, bbq's in wood stoves not Mexicans!) is directly behind the hotel and stretches up hill joining the front main road at the Lion Bar another English bar similar prices to home, excellent food, huge choice, try the chips and cheese ....to die for... trust me!
The old town has lots of shops and is quaint and nice..... we had all the Christmas lights up so it looked good as you'd expect. To Find the old town walk downhill 40yds to the Grey hotel, turn right before it follow the lane, it brings you to the town square, the shops etc are uphill.

All in all a nice v.decent hotel and for the money we paid for the whole lot superb value.Happy to answer any questions, sorry no photos of hotel this time.
