Hotels in Bulgaria tend towards kitsch and basic so don't be too swayed by the star ratings. In fact the more stars the only slightly less kitsch. Regnum is a claimed 4 star but it doesn't quite have the luxury or services you would expect for such an accolade elsewhere. That said, here's a perfectly decent hotel to rest your head after a day's skiing or sightseeing.
Location wise, it is a little cut off at the end of a road just outside town but not far enough to put off an easy ten minute walk into; and you still get the view across the little river to the ski gondola and the pretty lights of town. It seems most rooms have a balcony so try grab one that faces the town rather than the rather drab unfinished - and looking likely to stay that way - concrete shell apartment block to the other side. Go too for the deluxe rooms with a bath as the basic apartments are a little claustrophobic and dreary.
The deluxe apartment was certainly large with a separate double bedroom - albeit with two single beds pushed together and no holding bar to keep them that way! - and large hallway and kitchen / lounge. Don't be too excited by the kitchen in this Apart- Hotel. Yes you get a fridge, a sink and a two ring hob, yes you get a kettle and some cups and plates and glasses and cutlery. No, you do not get a pot or a pan or a microwave or ANYTHING to cook in. Cup of tea and a take away - sorted: self catering - nope.
The staff are all extremely helpful and most speak good enough English, the ski shuttle is regular and reliable and there's a ski store room for your kit. The kids room was small but had an entertainers' schedule and the games room was typically soulless. The spa has a pool and hot rooms but again is fairly small and does get very very busy at the end of the afternoon when you are back and fancy a dip..
The few things that let the Regnum down so badly will to some be the fundamentals: food and atmosphere. It's such a shame that for such a large hotel the bar is such an afterthought, a tiny little soulless place between the reception and the restaurant, almost a corridor filler with a few chairs. Sure there are other areas to sit in the hotel but you really wouldn't choose to relax here for long or catch up with your party or family. Then to the food...
Breakfast does have a wide choice of buffet options. Most of it apart from basic cereals and cheeses which you can't ruin, is truly awful. The eggs, both scrambled and piles of fried, are hard and stodgy and manage to be tasteless and metallic at the same time. Come later breakfast hours it becomes a bun fight to reach the toaster or items as it seems most guests consider it impolite to queue or wait a turn. As for dinner in an overlit room, the Turkish buffet looked horrific and the a la carte was overcooked. Word of caution too on the wine, it's all Bulgarian and expensive; you can taste the headache, no joke.
The Regnum is OK and probably one of the better hotels in Bansko. But the food, as with all the food in Bansko wherever you go, is so far from gourmet that you will look forward to coming home. A real shame for such a pretty part of Europe.
