I highly recommend staying at the Hotel Dzhangal (pronounced Jon-gal). George, the man who owns it, looked after us like we were family. He is a carpenter, and underneath the guest rooms he's furnished a huge bar in the basement, with stunning polished wood and carvings everywhere. We were the only people in the guest house at the time (September 2011), but I imagine in the winter with all the Russian skiers, the atmosphere would be incredible. On the third day we were there, my partner injured his foot and we were confined to the house while it healed. So George gave us a little workshop on carpentry for one of the days, and we made a big salad fork between us, which we've brought home. On one night he also cooked a meal and ate it with us, serving us some of his own home-made rakia too.
He spoke very little English, and we spoke very little Bulgarian, but it was amazing how much we could communicate through gestures and good humour. We found the whole experience to be so heart-warming, and genuine, because in my experience it's quite rare to really connect with people in a country where you speak next to nothing of the language.
