“'Has a magical atmosphere'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 25, 2013

After descovering that our family holiday had booked one hotel short, we found this and decided to go with it. It was easy to find since it had been sign-posted from the begining of old Gjirokastra. It took us through the heart of the city leading up the mountain - don't take the road leading around the town! From arrival you could see how beautiful all the wicker-work was. With original fireplaces and carved cilings, it was a pleasent find and an excellent choice of location with the town centre and castle both in easy walking distance.

Room Tip: Make sure you book in advance or you won't get this one, it fills up quickly! Make sure your ca...

I didn't have a reservation and the main hotel was fully booked but I stayed in another building (3 mins walk down the road) also managed by Hotel Kalemi and had breakfast at the main hotel. The rooms were spotless, huge and had amazing view of the castle. The bathroom was shared but again spotless and quiet. The breakfast was fantastic - eggs, fruit, coffee, toast, juice. Gjirokastra is a magical place and i would definitely recommend staying at Hotel Kalemi which is easily in walking distance of all the sites in the old town.

A warm welcome greeted our arrival at this hotel located in the heart of old Gjirokastra a great location only minutes from the castle, the ethnographic museum (which we visited - well worth it) across the road from Enver Hoxa's birthplace! - this can also be visited.

The room was clean, comfortable and well furnished, which along with the communal areas was in the 'Ottoman' style. A lovely terrace at the back of the hotel was our breakfast room! WiFi was available.

Gjirokastra is easily reached from Corfu via Sarande - and this hotel is a great and well priced option!

Very nice hotel full of charm in an old Turkish style palace. Old furniture and decoration, nice tonnelle and terrasse, with a great view on the city. Everything is authentic and charming. A real good address for a stop in this amazing city.

A quite simple, but very charming hotel, which provides an excellent view over beautiful Gjirokaster.

The staff is nice, but their knowledge of English varies, and can make even the simplest things challenging.

Some of the rooms have in-room bath, while others have private bathrooms across the hallway. A simple breakfast is served in nice place in the garden.

The ambience and atmosphere of this old ottoman residence makes it well worth a stay, even if it can be a bit challenging to find it by car.

This hotel is situated overlooking the town. Very nice staff. The big traditional room we had was really a beauty. We spent three nights in this memorable place with great joy.
The terrace overlooking the castle and the town was a nice place to drink a glass of wine.
Gjirokaster is a very nice historic town. Is takes a lot of climbing but no problem.

Room Tip: The great historic room we slept in was really beautiful. The beds were very good also the big bathr...

We loved our stay at Kalemi, beautiful traditional Ottoman rooms. The rooms are very large and airy, the bathrooms are clean, modern and spacious. The view from our window over the whole town was amazing and then on the next foor the balcony has a breathtaking view of the entire valley, a great place to unwind. The staff were friendly and very helpful. We had to leave at 6.30am to catch a bus and the night manager still served us breakfast in the courtyard at 6.00am. You really live a bit of history while staying here!
