“A cool, Avante Guarde 4 Star that Feels Like a 5 Star”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2013

This resort has a cool new vide and way of doing things. It spreads out quite far along a wonderful stretch of beach and also has lovely pools. The rooms are quite unique and basic, but the style selections make you feel like you're staying in a trendy hotel. It's wonderful how the buffets in the evening follow a different theme, from the food to the entertainment. The rooms are funky and basic, with very modern touches. The spa is gorgeous with trained therapists bent on giving you a healing treatment. In the same vein, there is a nicely equipped gym and tennis courts, and a whole plan for taking care of kids. There are some golf carts to get you there, but do request a room closer to the reception area if you don't want to do very long walks. A nice part of Mauritius too! (Note: There are only showers, no bathtubs, except for 9 jacuzzis in a certain type of room.)

My husband and I have just returned from a weeks holiday at Zilwa Attitude. The hotel only opened on the 8th, so it was exciting for us, to experience a brand new hotel in Mauritius. We have been to Mauritius, about 20 times, from 1982 until now, as we absolutely love it! So, we have stayed at many hotels on the island, from 3* to 5*, so have lots to compare with. The hotel itself, decor is lovely. There is no reception as you enter the hotel, the reception being tucked away around the corner, which is a bit strange, so when you arrive you are sitting in the bar area, while you wait for your checkin to be completed. The view from the bar/lounge area is stunning, looking out over the pool, to the beach. Our room was just as it was on the website, so it was what I expected. Just so you know, they provide a 'bar of shampoo soap' (which is awful to use), no conditioner, no body lotion. Having stayed at many 4* hotels, I do think they should provide these products. My husband walked to the shop outside and bought us shampoo etc. The rooms were clean, and comfortable. The restaurants, the main one, the food presentation is not good, and the food was ok. I felt I was in a kitchen dishing up, rather than at 4* star hotel. Where one sits to eat, is gorgeous, both inside on a covered area, and outside under umbrellas for breakfast. The beach restaurant is lovely, sitting on the sand.... with a great view. We had the all inclusive plus, so our lunch was a set menu , with good choices, I far preferred our lunch to our dinner, re food. Our local beers and wine were included in our package, which was great! Entertainment was fine, as it is in Mauritius, but like I said we have lots to compare with, and I feel, having been to Mauritius many times, there entertainment needs to be pushed up a bit. IF its your first visit to Mauritius, it would be fine. There is no hotel boutique, or guys on the beach selling their goods, which I missed. If you dont want to go into the town, you basically have nothing to buy. They do have a beach boutique, as they called it, which has nothing. There are 4 beaches, so one sits on the beach closet to your room...ours was ab lovely, warm was warm, and 2 waiters around all the time to bring you drinks. My husband always brings his fishing rod along, and right in front of where we lay on the beach, he could potter around fishing, and did catch, so he was very happy. The hotel has a gorgeous catamaran, which they should really 'sell/market' as we went on it for a day, and its brilliant! The beach canoes etc, are all available, and as the hotel is new, so is all of that ,w hich is great! Our weather was brilliant, the sea is gorgeous and warm, beer and wines were good, and cold, So, yes, we did enjoy our holiday very much! We relaxed, met lovely people, got great tans! I thought best to describe the hotel, so that you get the picture. For what we paid, I think it was well worth it, as it was a special, due to the opening. I do think, with time, they will improve. Oh, we did both have a full body massage, at the Spa, which was excellent! Yes, I would recommend Zilwa Attitude HOtel for a lovely holiday! The staff are very nice too! So there are a few negatives and a good few positives :)

Room Tip: we were in room 1302, and i would recommend it. It was ground floor, which is what we like. There...

After 11 days in this hotel I think we can highly recommend it.
The Hotel just opened 3 days before our arrival, so it was a bit risky to book. But everything was almost perfect.

The room (Couple Deluxe Beachfront ) more in rustic style witch matched my taste, well equipped and beautifully configured, with furniture elements of raw wood, ratten rugs, mini-bar, safe, free wi-fi, the cute pink dodo flip flops, the quite open shower, the very nice view to the lagoon when lying in bed.

For water fans of any age, there are 4 pools and the boat house that give you the possibility for sea sports (even a small diving center with a nice young eco friendly team).
The 3 beaches are nice, sandy, though artificial, but not spectacular for swimming because of the shallow water. Attention to the sharp remains of corals, at entering in water!

Also for sports fans there is o small gym (have not tried it), you can rent bicycles, with helmet compulsory :-) (it was really nice to explore the surroundings by bike), and not to forget the beach- and pool- sports activities organized by the nice young entertainers.

The restaurants offer both local and international good cuisine. We enjoyed the musical program presented by the singer chef once a week, at dinner.

All in one, a wonderful, calm location, with a breathtaking view to the turquoise lagoon and the little few islands, nice Mauritian style design, remarkable the combination with rough wood and old wooden objects, good quality of food, quite lot of entertainment and...... at last but not least, a very kind, friendly and helpful management team (very present and interacting with the clients) and staff, made our stay at Zilwa beautiful and thinking of a comeback sometime.

less:
- the restaurant staff is a little bit to slow or maybe insufficient
- even the breakfast starts at 7 am, most of the days the menu was not yet complete at the time (f.e fruits could only find later)
- the dive center is a bit cramped
- I would recommend a higher variety of bathroom facilities: hair conditioner and body lotion
- it would be appropriate for staff to warn clients about the risk of being cut when entering the water

Thank you to the entire Zilwa family for the friendly attitude towards your guests and keep up the good work.

We had a reservation at another hotel in Mauritius but at the last moment we were diverted to Zilwa Hotel (a week after it opened) and in exchange we were very lucky.
The view that you can enjoy just walked, is like a postcard: degrading pools, the open space of the reception and bar give the immediate impression of relaxation.

The rooms are quite spacious and functional , those on the ground floor have a small space that opens directly onto the garden (very nice)

About the restaurant is necessary to make a distinction: the main restaurant (buffet) has a varied cuisine with local and continental specialties (mostly French); someone in the group has tried the other two and does not have a positive opinion.

The beach restaurant has two problems: the menu has not changed in a week (and often some items on the menu were sold out) and the staff is very slow and disorganized.

Having made many trips, we have not taken advantage of all the possibilities offered (canoeing and water sports in general).

Even though the hotel has just been opened , we did not detect flaws even if some things are definitely improving

For example, the use of the Restaurant "Taba-J" for us, just arrived after a long trip: eat the first meal based on sandwiches, is not definitely a good approach to holiday.

Another point to improve is the management of the cleaning of the room: sometimes we were woken up at 8am, other times the cleaning had not been done at 1pm.

Our group chose the "all inclusive" and this has allowed us to have ample chance of choice and to be "pampered" (not bad the idea of the crepes in the middle of the afternoon…).

Would definitely recommend it to friends who will make a holiday in Mauritius.

Stayed at Zilwa Attitude for three days during the "soft open" period before the hotel officially opened to the public. Although the location is extremely nice, and the architecture and layout is very well done, they still had a few bugs to work through (which is natural enough during a soft open). Good things were the ambiance, location, quality of food (in the bespoke restaurants - the fee buffet was a bit mediocre), friendly staff, no mosquitoes and free WiFi throughout. The locating of the hotel could have been custom made for water sports - nice calm shallow water behind a fringe reef - so even when the wind is blowing you still have strong breezes but calm water to sail/windsurf in. And it never gets really deep so if you are a poor windsurfer (like me) you can just stand up very easily at almost every point.

The less good aspects were that it was all a bit chaotic - checking in and checking out both took ages. We asked for a late checkout but were told that was not really possible, so we turned up at 12pm (along with everyone else) and queued for nearly 30 minutes to check out. The landscaping will take a while to grow in. And the beach is an artificial beach and feels like it.

I suspect if I go back in a year or two it will all seem much nicer and smoother, but at this stage they are still working out how to polish the diamond.

A brand new resort which opened the day before we arrived, still growing into itself and with a number of expected 'kinks' to work out.

The rooms close to the main bar and restaurant are sea facing and great for access to facilities and the beach with families.

For couples try rooms closer to the boat house as it is more private and has its own second beach on that side of the resort.

Food was excellent, service is great and the facilities available are excellent.

Child care is for children over 3 so be aware if you have youngsters.

Their is a small convenience store just at the entrance to the resort, so get your extras (including booze) there as it will reduce your overall trip costs.

Worth taking a taxi ride to the nearby factory shops for locally produced clothing for premium European brands.

Beautiful setting, stylish hotel although rooms won't be to the taste of everyone.

Food below expectations and worse than had in other similar priced resorts on the island.

The staff are under-trained and slow.

It has huge potential to get better but they have a huge amount of work to get to an acceptable level
