“Historic & beautiful hacienda but not fulfilling potential”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed November 27, 2009

My wife and I stayed at La Cienega for a couple of nights as part of our honeymoon. The long, eucalyptus lined drive up to the historic building was an aptly elegant introduction to the beautiful hacienda. Upon arrival we were greeted by at least 3 rather formal staff members and shown to our comfortable if not slightly sparse and cold room. The room had historic character features such as the fireplace and the large shuttered windows but comfortable luxury it was not. The central courtyard, the comunal areas and in aprticular the hacienda's church are all fabulous and and are reminders of the residence's former glory.
However the service overall wasn't fantastic, the food wasn't particularly great and it's price (particularly the wine) didn't match the quality. This is more of a problem as the hacienda is pretty isolated so alternative dining options are limited.
Overall the La Cienega is a historic and elegant hacienda with lots of character but we felt it didn't quite live up to our expectations or the cost. Having said that we did get to see some fantastic views on both our trip up Cotopaxi and to the stunning Quilotoa lake so this leg of our Ecuador trip was still memorable.

Very nice old Hacienda with historical architecture and fantastic gardens,
located near to Cotopaxi.
Very basic rooms with uncomfortable beds, wide selection of food but quality was poor, service was mediocre, relation price-quality a 3.

La Cienaga is a beautiful hacienda near the volcano of Cotapaxi. The building and grounds are very attractive.

We found it to be a little disappointing compared with the previous hacienda we had stayed at on the trip. The rooms were very sparse and the service was slow, especially in the restaurant.

We stayed at La Cienega during a trip to Cotopaxi National Park and Lake Quilatoa, the hosteria is a large old hacienda with additions set in lovely grounds. The place was nearly empty on our first night and we were well looked after. The manager made a big effort to chat to us informally in the bar even though her English was not great, we felt very welcome. The staff were very accommodating, even when my partner managed to knock a tray full of fresh fruit juice all over himself and the waiter!

Our 'room' consisted of two large rooms, a twin and a double, the latter having a sitting area and log fire which was lit each evening. As the building is old, it could be cold and draughty without this additional heat as the only other heating was a small panel heater.

The 'swimming pool' was not advertised and when we discovered it by accident found that it was more greenish pond than a place to swim, it looked like it had last been used in the 1920s. We saw a varierty of humming birds and other bird species in the grounds. It was a relaxing place to stay.

Wine was very expensive, even compared to most places in Ecuador where it was never cheap. We enjjoyed our stay.

We stayed here in April. We knew it would be chilly. When we arrived they had lost our reservation (made thru an Ecuador travel company). Then, they "found" the reservation a few minutes later. Our first room was huge and the bath fixtures were kind of rusty. There is only a small spaceheater to heat the room. We couldn't get the hot water working, so we requested another room. The second room was nice, but again, the rooms are cold! We tired to make a fire in the fireplace, but it took forever. Overall, this place was a bit of a disappointment. It is in desperate need of some room remodeling.

If you are in the area, which isn't very interesting except for its proximity to Cotopaxi, this is really a rather marvelous place to stay. It's at the end of a long allee of old eucalyptus trees, and seems to have kept its authenticiy as a hacienda, though with much reduced acreage. The building and grounds are wonderful, especially the courtyard garden. The rooms were a little austere, but spacious. The great old stone staircases were especially fine.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 4, 2008

my husband and i stayed for one night on our way from quito to riobamba and absolutely loved it.
we were given one of the honeymoon suites on the 3rd floor and had as much fun walking around this fabulous hacienda as we did on the nariz del diablo train ride or at the otovalo market.
we went horseback riding and visited cotopaxi national park from there.
the rate was unbelievable and included breakfast. book early as this hotel is reportedly almost always full.
this is likely the loveliest place where we have stayed in all of our travels.

  • Liked — gorgeous historic hacienda and suite
  • Disliked — location -- unless you are going to cotopaxi national park, there is not much else around.
