“The most beautiful hotel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 2, 2011 via mobile

I absolutely loved this hotel, from the drive up to it, to the internal courtyard with it's own chapel, this is one of my favourite hotels of all time. It is not right next to the national park so you need to do a tour or take a taxi. The tours through the hotel are quite expensive and our guide didn't speak English so make sure you ask questions before agreeing!

The food was pretty good and the service excellent. We loved coming in from the cold to the little fires dotted around everywhere.

When we arrived our room was at first not ready. After some discussion they showed us another room we did not like and then our first room was ready all of a sudden. It was a nice room with a big fireplace. This was absolutely necesary as the hotel walls are 2 metres thick it is quite cold inside. A lady of the hotel came to light the fire and there were 2 additional electrical heaters as well. The room had nice big chairs which could be put in front of the fireplace. We had acces to the internet through wifi, even though we were as far as you can be from reception so that was very good.
The restaurant has 3 different rooms. Only one room has a fire, which we did not see untill we had had a very cold lunch. For dinner we went in to the room with the fire and that was lovely. For Ecuadorian standards the restaurant was quite pricey (about $60 for 3 people with just a main course and a beer)
It is far away from everything so you will need to have all your meals at the hotel or take a trip by car somewhere else.
Breakfast was excellent, eggs, fresh juice, fresh fruit salad, pancake, coffee and tea.

The sheer elegance of La Cinega as well as the sense of history made this hotel memorable. Learning about its history from the brochure and the staff gave us a much better understanding of Ecuador's past.Since our trip was more focussed on adventure and outside activities (than culture or history), it was particularly nice to stay in such a historic place. Other writer have commented that the rooms were cold. We had a space heater and it kept our very large room quite cozy.
As othes have mentioned, the grounds are fabulous and the occasional view of Cotapaxi.
Of all the places that we stayed, they served the best breakfast.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 22, 2010

In early October 2010, we spent two night at this Hacienda. While there is quite a bit of history associated with this Hacienda (Humboldt slept here, French scientists used it as a base in the 1800's when measuring latitude, Ecuadorian Presidents have visited) and the chapel, public areas and interior gardens are intriguing and nice places to wander while visiting, the rooms were fairly basic in their design decoration and appointments. We were lucky enough to stay in one of the rooms along the back (30-35) which has a fireplace and was far from any guest or car traffics so it was very quiet. We found the room a little chilly but the fireplace was more than enough to take off the chill and it was nice to return to a fire (set by the staff) after dinner.

On the down side, the furniture needs to be updated and the bathroom was very basic and the hot water needed to be run 5 minutes before it became hot and even then, with little pressure. We dined both nights at the restaurant and found the food fine but not especially noteworthy. The staff was very friendly and accommodating -- of course, being with a guide who was obviously well know to the establishment likely did not hurt in how we were treated.

We used the Hacienda as a jumping off point to visit Cotpaxi and the Quilota Loop (including hiking down to and up from the Laguna). All and all the Hacienda gets marginal thumbs up thanks to the staff, the grounds, the architecture and the history. It reminded us of some of the grand old hotels that are still found in the Berkshires of Massachusetts - having seen there better day in terms of infrastructure but still retaining an air of elegance that somehow pulls you in. The Ritz it isn't but compared with other lodging options in the area that we drove by - you might mistake it for such.

Stayed one night just days ago. Accidentally got best room looking out on to Cotopaxi so ask for it: Room #6. Huge eucalyptus tree-lined approach is wonderful. Reasonably priced on internet.

The general feeling from the outside is of decayed elegance with some of the exterior needing TLC. Interior hallways were intriguing. Grounds were interesting. Staff was helpful except the front desk receptionist was on the phone every time we stopped by with a question. No, I mean every time!!

The most wonderful driveway and entrance to this old Hacienda, the room was very clean but a little plain.
We stayed 2 nights here and as we were on a photographic trip we had to leave rather early in the morning and the hotel were sorted us out with a packed breakfast .. great location for exploring the Cotopaxi National park and the high roads up to Quilotoa Crater lake. Our guide from Surtrek could stay with us at this Hacienda which was great.
Food was good and staff very friendly.
