If you want a calm place with lots of snow and some adventure sports (skiing and paragliding), then I suggest you stay at Iceland in Solang valley, 30 mins drive from Manali. I highly recommend this hotel. I was there a couple of weeks back. The mountain view rooms with the windows opening to the snow capped mountains have one of the best views I have ever seen in a hotel room. The food, service, owner - all are reliable, honest and nice people. We did paragliding and skiing. The hotel arranged for all of these. The stay here was the highlight of our trip.

However, be warned - other than serenity and adventure sports, Solang has little else to offer. i.e. no shops and not many restaurants like in Manali.

Initially the staff was very polite but Last new year they got drunk and were passing lewd remarks to my frnds wife and when we confronted them . they started beating us. We had to call police to get out of that Hotel.
My suggestion is not to stay there . If you do then , Please stay in your room.

Stayed at Iceland Hotel twice this summers! Once when I drove from Leh to pick up my family who traveled by Volvo from Delhi and took them with me to Ladakh. The second visit was on the way back from Ladakh by road. Though not a "hotel" person during my vacations, as we mostly trek and camp, I was surprised at the comfort level the hotel provided in terms of cleanliness and service. Excellent food, though for the North Indian palate and clean, comfortable rooms with tons of wood paneling.
My advise: Definitely skip staying in Manali town and drive the extra mile to stay at Solang Valley

Room Tip: Pick a room on the higher floors facing the river. Its a bit of a climb but the view is much better.

Liked the hotel (new building Top floor mountain facing), specialty is view from the hotel is amazing, staff are very friendly and cooperative, they have even helped to the extend of sending a person to Manali as I required some emergency medicine. Appreciate Sunil for all his help extended to me and my family.

Rooms are nice and clean, overall enjoyed staying in Hotel Iceland.

For Rohtang pass I would suggest not to take kids along with you now because of the crazy traffic jam, we started at 4.30 AM on 11th June and reached at 5 PM in the evening at Solang.Enjoy staying at Solang and do go to Chota Amarnath.
