My two children (aged 5 and 15) and I went to Crater of Diamonds after they watched a tv show and would NOT let it go until I took them. We arrived early- before 9am- because it was forecasted to be 100 degrees that day. We visited the gift shop then made our way out onto the field where we dug, washed, and sorted through our dirt. After about two hours, the heat was getting to the kids and we quit without finding our diamond. BUT someone found one while we were there as the loudspeaker made an announcement. We ate at the onsite restaurant and our food and server were great. We then hit the water park for an hour or so and all in all had a great day. The 5 year old was upset he didn't have a diamond so we drove to town and bought him a pretty cool crystal from one of the antique shops. If you are going, be prepared for the heat (or other weather conditions) and just realize that this is the only place in the world where you can take your kids to dig for diamonds. Sure, the odds are against you finding a diamond of significant size, but people do every year! Look at it as a casino adventure you can take your kids on, and best of luck to you. We had a blast.
