We visited Mountain Harbor Resort in mid-October, as part of our annual "explore Arkansas' scenic rides and state parks" motorcycle vacation. The resort is a wonderful base to explore that area of Arkansas, close to Hot Springs National Park, Scenic Byway 7, the Talimena Scenic Byway, and several beautiful state parks.
Nestled in the Ouachita Mountains and Ouachita National Forest, along the shores of 40,000 plus acre Lake Ouachita, Mountain Harbor Resort has condos, cabins, and lodge rooms, a large marina, a spa, and a riding stable - truly something for almost everyone. If you fish, the lake contains trophy size bass. If you boat, the marina is well tended, and the package we booked contained a boat slip (which we didn't use, since we were on the bikes and not towing a boat.)
We stayed in a lodge room, and, since it rained continuously AND heavily while we were there, ate all of our meals in the restaurant. Our accommodations were a wonderful surprise. Although the lodge has been there for a while, the rooms are updated, surprisingly spacious, very clean, and very, very comfortable. Hot chocolate and popcorn is available in the rooms, the bed was incredibly comfortable, and the extra touches, including heated tile floors and expanded personal care supplies in the bathroom, along with a private seating area on the patio, were fantastic. An earlier reviewer complained of the view of the marina from their patio. Kind of a silly complaint, given the location of the resort. We too, could see the boat storage areas from our patio - if we looked that way. If, however, we turned our heads (or our chairs) a few degrees, there was a fantastic view of the lake.
A laundry facility was a short run through the raindrops across the parking lot from our room, so we used the down time to do laundry - an added plus. It's so much nicer to return home without dirty clothes.
Our meals were fantastic. We tried something different at each meal, and all of our choices were flavorful, well presented, and more than adequate in size. Whatever you order at the beginning of your meal, make sure you save room for dessert. Every dessert we tried was great. (There are a microwave and refrigerator in each room, so box up some of your dinner for later if you need to, to keep room for dessert.) Restaurant and front office staff were friendly, helpful, and attentive.
Although I suspect the resort is much busier during the summer season, for us, our October visit was a wonderful opportunity to relax and recharge in a quiet, comfortable space. I'm sure we'll visit again. This may be my new "favorite place."
Check out their specials on their website and on the Arkansas Tourism website. They are fantastic.
