“Not as Pretty as Ancud”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 20, 2013 via mobile

While its population rivals Ancud, Chiloe's capital could not be more different from the laid back and picturesque Ancud. There is a constant buzz about Castro, which had a big town feel. Streets are not as pretty and there is more traffic. Still, Castro has its charms if you know where to look. It's also a good base for island hopping.

We rented a boat from our hostel, Palafito Sur (which also rents to non-guests) and rowed out onto the bay. From there we had spectacular views of the palafitos, a sight no avid photographers should miss. You can also catch a tourist boat from the pier which does 15-minutes ride out to the palafitos. They close rather early though so it's best to go in the mornings.
