“Vacation in Punta Cana”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 30, 2012

My daughter and I spent 8 days at this resort. Food was very good. Avoid La Turtuga buffet restaurant. No air conditioning or ceiling fans. Hotter inside than out. Margarita is very good. Eduardo and Luis are excellent waiters and make the dining experience very pleasurable. Route 66 was also good. Too bad all the indoor restaurants can't be cooler in temperature than they are. The entertainment was outstanding. MiniMe, Jack Michael and Mickey Mouse were a hoot! I wish I had their energy. The beach, pools and pool bars were great. In general, the male staff were much more friendly than the women. Oh, the two young men at Mike's coffee shop are very gracious to their guests. We would have liked a more updated room and pillow cases that actually fit the uncomfortable pillows! Management should seriously consider additional towel stations; One at the beach, off to the far side of the property is extermely inconvenient on several levels. All in all, I would rate the week an 8+ out of 10.

Room Tip: Building 5, facing pool side.

The staff of the Ocean Blue are the most incredible, friendly people you will ever meet. It is amazing how these people remember guests from past years. Cristal in the lobby bar screamed and ran to hug us when she saw us walk in. Rachel made a point of hugging us and our friends every time she saw us. Wilfredo in the main buffet continues to help us with our Spanish lessons and the other waiters and waitresses (Gelina) always made sure they put the A-1 sauce on our table when they saw us walk in. I wish I had got all their names too. These hard working people do everything possible to make your holiday enjoyable.
We returned to the Ocean Blue for the sixth time with two other couples this time. As we are all seniors, we requested second floor facing the pool when we booked with our travel agent. We then sent a fax directly to the Ocean Blue requesting second floor facing pool again. We were in contact with Reginaldo of Guest Services, who is off recovering from back surgery, and he called Reception on our behalf to make sure we got second floor. When we arrived at the hotel we were all given third floor. As one of us had open heart surgery in December, and another had hip replacements, third floor was out of the question. We were eventually changed to second floor, but it meant we lived out of a suitcase for a day, and we had to stand in line behind 100 locals who were registering, in order to get our new room key.
Because we have been frequent guests at this hotel (including going twice in 2011), we feel that we should get some extra consideration with our room requests. This is the third time in a row that we have not got our requested rooms and we won't give them another chance. We love everything about this hotel, but we feel that they do not even try to accommodate room requests.
The only other issue we had this year, was that they were fumigating (fogging) an area very close to the restaurants when we were eating outside at the steak house.
There have been many changes to this resort in the past year, some good and some not so good. We feel very sad that we will not be returning because of their inability to fulfill a simple room request. We will definitely miss the people at this resort.

Room Tip: Go somewhere else if you want to choose your room.

Back from a week (24/08 - 31/08) in this wonderful resort with my gf and another couple, and I just can say good things about this hotel. Located about 30min away from Punta Cana Airport, we took a private transfer to get the hotel. However there are standart transfers also. As soon as we arrived, there was the left overs of Isaac's storm, so it was raining a lot!! but, a member of staff hotel got a van with plastic protection to get us to our room, located on 8th village. but let's review this hotel step by step:
LOBBY: very large, spacious, clean, with a bar in the middle. Every nights there were live shows after 11pm, with nice music and great entertainment! Also free wi-fi.
ROOM: Very large, with two queen size bed or one king size bed, very confy. Minibar with 7up, pepsi, beer and water, replaced twice a week. Extreme large balcony! Room service is until 10:30pm. The rooms also have a fan and Air condition working all day without keycard needed.
Every morning two ladies will clean your room! Let me give a special thanks to joselyn who took care of our room!
BATHROOM: Large tube with working hydro massage, hair comb, hairdryer, tooth paste and comb, body lotion, shower gel, shampoo. Towels are not changed everyday unless you wet them...
POOL: two very large pools, with three jacuzzi, kids zone, bars in the water and outside, towel service. The deepest part is 1,40m/ 4,5feet deep. The water is warm and very clean. there are also inside water sunbeds.
ENTERTAINMENT: Is the BEST part in the hotel!! The staff is amazing, memorizing your names and being funny all the time! I really have to mention their names because they are absolutely fantastic. The friendly and funny Alejandro, always concerned about your well staying and doing his best to make you happy, the non-stop Minimi, the amazing dj Carlos playing all hits, the fitness guy Charlie Brown, the fantastic and always funny Willy Wonka, the joker Candyman, and finally the spectacular Mickey Mouse! They are amazing and I sure any hotel would love to hire them! THANK YOU entertainment team!
there is also a theatre where, every night there were live shows, well prepared catching your attention from 9pm to 11pm. and then the show goes on in the lobby ending at the disco.
BUFFET: at the breakfast, there was a large variety of food! bread, pancakes, cakes, cereals, milk, fruit juices, fruit (amazing papaia), mixed eggs, personalized omelets, bacon, sausages, and so much more! at the lunch, the food was always diversified, with fresh food, fish and meat, salads, fruit juices and soda, pastas, hamburgers, french fries. You can easily have a healthy meal, a mediterranean meal or a american meal. Up tho all tastes! It's impossible to stay hungry! at Dinner, there was always thematic dinners... Mexican, Oriental, American, Dominican....
À LA CARTE RESTAURANTS: there are 5+1 à la carte restaurants, where you can have dominican food - "La Casa de Mi Abuela", mexican food - "Margarita", Italian food - "I Mascheratti di Venezia", american food - "Route 66", steak house - "El Bodegón", and the Caribbean cuisine - "La Brasa". All these 5 restaurants have no extra charge. The only with extra charge is the Bucanero, at the beach. It's a seafood restaurant, and the price per person is 40USD. The seafood, including lobster, is very nice prepared. There are no special requirements about dress code! you can dress like usually. In my opinion, the best restaurants concerning to quality and quantity are the "Route 66", with very tasty hamburgers, chicken wings, steak and curly french fries; and the "El Bodegón", with extremely nice and tasty steaks. You need to make a reservation at the beginning of the night or otherwise you wouldn't get a table. There are also a coffee house with very nice coffees, hot and cold, desserts and cookies - Mike's coffee - and a sports bar working 24hours a day with a small variety of food, such as hamburgers and chicken wings.
Yes, there are some people trying to sell you the "Club Premier". But they are so nice that is impossible to be rude with them! They are working! If you are not interested, they respects you.
HOTEL: enough sunbeds, mini vans working all day to pick you from your village to different spots in the hotel and way back, disco, mini market, gift shop, clothes shop, tabacco shop. If your flight is late, you can ask for a courtesy room where you can have a shower and change your clothes and a day at the pool or beach. All services, including pool, restaurants.. can be used during your last day.
BEACH: there are sunbeds at the beach, a bar, kayaks, and many funny entertainment. There is also a waterspots shop, called Pelicano, where you can find many activities. Almost all with extra charge. The water is very very warm and calm!
OTHER HOTEL AMENITIES: Spa, Gym, Bowling (once per stay free, next games have extra charge, but are cheap), snooker, kids club...
Trust me! most of the travelers who come here saying bad things about this hotel in particulary have no ideia what is a bad hotel! This Hotel, Ocean Blue & Sand, is much more than a simply hotel! Is a Great Hotel!
In my opinion, the less good part is the towel exchange at the room that could be everyday. But overall, it's a 5* hotel with no doubt!!! I would love to came back and meet everyone again! They are the best in Punta Cana!

Room Tip: Ask for a room with pool view.

I stayed @ Ocean Blue Sept. 1-9. I arrived on a Sat. afternoon & departed late morning on a Sunday. We had no prblems with check in or check out. My sister and I arrived & departed separately she had a 10 pm return flight and altho we checked out at 12 pm sunday she was able to use all the facilities the rest of the day & was given a courtesy room for 30 minutes to shower & freshen up before departing the hotel at 7 pm. Staff was very professional, courteous & helpful. We had no issues with any services we requested such as luggage delivery/pick up to/from room. Room service menu was limited but very prompt. We were out of our room by 8 am every morning and most times our room was perfectly cleaned by 12 noon. We had fresh towels by late afternoon every day, they sometimes came a little later but the maid explained that was because they were still being laundered. The regular jr suite was spacious for 2 adults, comfy bed, a/c worked fine - I noticed PC is not as humid as the Riv. Maya was the same time last year, so we wer even able to turn the a/c off at night for a few hours and slept comfortably. We had hot water & excellent water pressure every evening so no complaints at all!

The pools are what I expected after having stayed at a sister hotel H10 in Riv. Maya last year, I love that they are kept impeccably clean, I would see 2-3 pool guys start cleang & vaccuminf the pools every morning at 6:45-8:30 or so...no matter how busy the pools get or even late afternoon the water always seems so clean and fresh, altho maybe a little too warm if you happen to get sunburnt, but again no complaints!!

The beach - loved it, water is warm & clear. The last 3 days of our stay there were red flag warnings so waves were abundadnt but the first part of our stay the water was perfect for swimminf, floating & just hanging out in. No problems with getting loungers at the pool or beach, we would move multiple times a day. I did notice the sand next to the priviledge beach area is very pebbly, small rocks, but walking towards the towel hut the sand quality improves. Great beach for early morning walks & watching the sunrise or late afternoon strolls, during the day it gets a bit too hot for my taste and i prefer the water or shade :)

Food - Breakfast No complaints I always ate way more than I wanted to at breakfast time. We always picked up an activity calendar for the day located on the table with the juice & champagne for mimosas @ breakfast, it lists all the planned activities & even backup activities in case of rain. Spa specials, weather forecast. Much to my surprise they are very prompt and all planned activities start on time!
Lunch - you have a choice main buffet or the beach buffet and if you look at the activity listing they sometimes have a cart that circles the pools around 1 pm offering something different every day 1 day it was hot dogs another day cold fruit...on saturdays they had a huge paella made near the pool. If you have a diverse palatte you should always be able to find something to eat. If you want more options you should go to the main buffet vs the beach buffet.I basically ate fresh freshly cooked fish, chicken, salad, a soup of some sort, maybe some rice & beans, cooked veggies...but there is more to choose from if you are not carb restricted like pizza, burgers, hot dogs, cooked to order pasta.....i could see someone getting bored with the food if all they know how to eat is burgers & fries, but if you are not picky you will not go hungry.

Mike's Cafe - whether you are a coffee drinker or not this is the place for a sweet treat.
Dinner - Again, plenty of options - you can choose which a la carte restaurant you want each night for dinner or just head to the main buffet. Every night 1 or 2 restaurants were closed on a rotating basis, not a problem becasue there were plenty of options. I must say I was surprised I ate steak 6 or maybe even 7 times during my stay, the worst steak was at the mexican restaurant, but the other times was really pretty good! My favorite steak was the grilled beach dinner buffett (main buffet was closed & they offered dinner on the beach) and at Route 66. And several times at the main buffet you just tell the cook which piece or how many pieces you want and he cooks it right up for you, so again lots of choices! We never waited more than 30/40 minutes for a table at any a la carte.

Drinks - I did not go to this all-inclusive to drink heavily :) more so to soak up some sun, relax, unwind & spend quality time with my sister - she lives in europe & i live in the US so to me it was more about quality than quantity...my favorite drink at the main lobby (Sexy Black is a hoot!!) was the mojito with no sugar added for me, i saw them cutting up the fresh hierba buena in the morning, so availability might be limited when they run out. If you like a sweet sugary drink the Ocean was good, i think they have daily drink specials at the main lobby but never asked, on the beach i would order several vodka tonics and pour them in my insulated tumbler and was good to go and besides that i just drank a ton of water, bartenders were all professional & friendly. Again sexy black stood out the most we would be waiting in line for dinner and could hear his singing & yelps as he worked away.

Spa - We had pedicures and massages at the spa, pricing was a bit expensive but the services were professional, convenient and appreciated. After our massage in the actual spa not beach or pool we used the hot tub for addtnl relaxation, there is also a dry suana in the locer room & 2 showers.

Hotel activities - my favorite was water aerobis, they animation team made it fun & we had some good laughs espcially with Emmanuel.

Tour/excursions - We booked through Cheap Caribbean and were told the day after arrival we had to meet our rep in the lobby to determine our airport pickup time from the hotel. Our rep was helpful in giving us tips such as don't drink the water, pay all charges to your room the day before check out to make check out process go faster...she gave us info & pricing on excursions tour they offered, dune buggies, snorkeling, saona island...we were shocked at the pricing and decided we would think about, we knew we wanted to do something but were in no rush to decide.
My sister departed from Madrid's barajas airport to Punta Cana & was given a brochure for ***Weiler Caribbean Sea*** with the list or tours & pricing in dollars. She got in touch with Weiler and booked an all day Isla Saona tour, approx 7am - 7pm we couldn't have made a better choice!! Their pricing was very competitive but honestly for all they offered us during & after our excursion I would have gladly paid more, this was truely all inclusive ;). They were different in that it was a much more intimate, personalized experience. Basically we were picked up at our hotel early morning with 2 other couples & our 2 tour guides Lluis & Miguel, we made a quick stop at the Basilica in Higuey and off we went. We took a speed boat to do some snorkeling, then we went to what was called a natural pool in the middle of the sea, out we jumped to swim, hold some pretty heavy star fish & play a drinking game :) then we got back on the boat and before you knew it we were at Isla Saona. All throughout our tour, our guide Lluis was our personal photgrapher taking pictures of our group, individually, couples, etc making sure we all sat together at the lunch buffet, drinks included & answered any questions we had. We left the island back on the speed boats & then boarded a catamaran for more drinking, dancing, pictures & fun. By the end of the day we had 6 new friends. Boy, did they ever deliver!! Well not long after returning from our vacation Weiler uploaded a sneak peak of some of our pics onto their facebook page & a few days after that sent us a slideshow with music & pics of us and our new friends.(Check out their facebook page to see pics!!) We regretted not having booked the dune buggy excursion with them :( but that's what next time is for :) I highly recommend Weiler. The only thing I should note is our entire group was spanish speaking from spain (tour guides included) so clients are mostly spanish, if you are bi-lingual this is a non-issue, but even if you don't speak/understand spanish I can't image a better more positive experience. Weiler Caribbean truly Rocks!! All in all an awesome experience all included in 1 low price!! (I noticed other tour operators also taking pics & videos but there was a charge for their customers).

All in all Punta Cana is a great vacation destination - Ocean Blue and Sand is a solid 4 star resort (with 5 star being highest rating available) - as long as you don't go on spring break & you realize that on weekends it opens up to the locals and the atmosphere changes! But mid-week it's a dream.

Room Tip: We were in building 8, 2nd floor facing the pool, it was conveniently located.

We went in mid August and had a wonderful time. We went with another family so there were 8 of us in total. Check-in was easy breezy. Dario - thought he said Daddy-O - and became an ongoing joke - did ask us to come to the timeshare meeting. We were not harassed. Rooms were very nice, clean, and kept well stocked. The housekeepers were very nice, didn't speak a lot of English, but we were able to manage between hand gestures, botched Spanish, etc. Pools are fabulous. Beach is gorgeous. Sand is a bit strange - more clay like but very soft and lovely. Ocean had some kelp but no big deal. Buffets were very good. Was everything delish? No, but some of it is just cultural differences in preparation. There were a lot of delish things and plenty to choose from. Wilfredo and Michael helped us each day and were beyond awesome. They went above and beyond. On the day we left I wanted to grab 2 packs of these packaged crackers the had for my kids for the plane home but they didn't have them out. I asked Michael and he went in the back and got them for me. My 2 1/2 year old was cranky at times, broke a glass, and they were so gracious and kind. The restaurants book up fast so best to go as soon as you can to get a reservation. We went to the Dominican restaurant that was good but different. We went to the Mexican which was really good. We went to the Diner and that was also good. Steakhouse was great. Books up really fast. It is small so if you don't go early for reservations, probably won't get in. The Italian was under construction. Service in restaurants is slow but typical. You get to enjoy the meal and the company you are with. Mike's Coffee Shop is FABULOUS!!! We tried a lot of the drinks, both hot and cold and all were great. They even make smoothies which my kids loved. My daughter would ask to go to Mike's each day, several times. The ambiance is great. It is a great place to escape the heat. They hAve these double headed fans that keep it really cool. There are photographers that take pics all the time. You can get pics with animals (birds, monkeys). Very cool. I booked an appointment to get pics of my children and got Jorge. He is beyond awesome! I have not had professional pics of my son since he was 1 1/2 because he screams and runs. Jorge had him laughing, posing, etc. The pics he took were drop dead gorgeous. He captured their personalities and the beautiful surroundings. We were there over a weekend. I saw a lot of posts about different treatment or extra crowded. We did not experience that at all. Service was the same. Chairs at both beach and pool are reserved by people with towels. No big deal. We went each morning and did same. We got chairs at beach or pool each and every day. We did the Safari trip and it was great. It was a long day but well worth it. We visited school, went to a typical home, a couple of churches, a ranch where we ate, relaxed and went horseback riding, and finally the beach. Well worth the money. Our vacation was lovely. The people were lovely. We brought $150 in ones and a couple of bucks here and there go a long way. My children played with other children from all over the world and language didn't matter. There are some topless women and children but my kids didn't notice. My son played with a topless French girl and thought nothing of it. It was more uncomfortable for the adults in our group. There are many more positives to this place than a couple of "inconveniences" or cultural differences. I would definitely recommend it.

Room Tip: We were in building 4 which was between restaurants and first pool. Central location was good. We...

We stayed at Ocean Blue for 2 weeks at the beginning of August for our first family holiday outside of the UK. We are a family of 5 with two teenage girls (17 & 15) and one boy (11).
We loved the resort and everyone was so friendly and welcoming. We were welcomed to the hotel by Gaby and some lovely drinks whilst checking in at the hotel. Everything I had read before going said not to leave your suitcases alone but they make you leave them in the lobby whilst you check in. We were worried but it was all okay. We had 2 rooms with amazing ceiling fan and air conditioning. We would have liked adjoining rooms but there was only one other room between us and the girls could ring our room on the internal phone without getting charged. Our room had a really comfortable king sized bed and a fold out sofa bed for our son which he said was comfy. The girls had a double bed each. The rooms were well looked after with a fridge stocked with Pepsi, 7up and bottled water every day. It even had a bottle of bubbly and a couple of cans of beer on arrival. The TV had some English speaking channels so we could at least watch telly in bed. Our bathroom was clean apart from the shower screen being a little foggy. I never did find a plug to use the Jacuzzi bath but another couple said they tried theirs and it stank and wouldn’t turn off so they had to call someone out to it. I did find the girls’ bathroom smelled a bit damp but they didn’t seem bothered by it. The maids do a very good job and appreciate tips. We were told they don’t earn very much but they seemed to work long hours. We had a couple of problems with the safe and the bathroom door lock but they came out very quickly to carry out repairs. We had the occasional small lizard come to visit and one living in the wall outside on the veranda. It was really nice to see and the girls were ok with it after the initial shrieks! We were in Villa 9, which was good for access to the pool.
The pool and poolside area was lovely and clean and they fumigate the whole complex most evenings to keep the mosquitoes at bay, which is a brilliant idea. There were 2 main pools that were a good size. Bit of a nightmare getting sun loungers by the quieter pool some days but there was usually plenty on the beach. The other pool had activities going on if you want to join in and a daily exercise class poolside about 5pm every day. Loved the pool bar with the constant flow of merengue music! Beware the Henna Tattoos from the lady by the pool. We all had one done on the first week and she offered to do them all again for $20 the day before we went home. My son and husband both had an allergic reaction to the second tattoo and it was only on doing research when we came home that we realised it was not natural henna as it was very black and could have caused scarring and permanent sensitivity to henna found in clothes and hair dyes.
Take lots of high factor sunscreen as if you have to buy it in the hotel shop it is really expensive but it is a good well stocked shop if you have forgotten anything and got some lovely souvenirs too.
We chose this resort as it had a Teens club for the girls but in honesty they never went - think they were a little shy and relied too much on having each other. Another teenage girl from the UK found it hard to mix at first then got really friendly with many other kids and we always saw her hanging out with them.
We simply can't understand the negative comments about the food in the buffet restaurant as the food was always amazing with something for everyone, even the fussy teenager! We didn’t even try to go to one of the other restaurants as we found it easier to go to the buffet with a wide choice and the different theme night. Most of the waiters were lovely - Dauris & Sanely were the main guys we stuck with. We didn’t always tip them (found tipping very strange as we don’t have to tip at home) but they were still happy to give us good service. Some of the other waiters that served us were very good at telling us when they were going home for a few days - we figured they were hinting for a tip!
Our Thomas Cook rep, Louise, was lovely; really knowledgeable and helpful. She visited the hotel a few times and arranged our excursions for us and even negotiated a discount for us. There are people walking round the pool and beach selling excursions but we were worried about not being covered by insurances etc and to be honest the prices weren’t much cheaper than the ones Thomas Cook endorsed.
We went on a buggy excursion, trip to Catalina Island, Caribbean Festival & Mega Trucks. The buggies and mega truck were absolutely fantastic experiences and really made our holiday! Would recommend them to anyone. Take something for the school or children on the mega trucks. The Catalina Island trip was okay but we were told the food and drink was all-inclusive. However, after leaving the hotel at 7 in the morning we didn’t get a drink until we reached Catalina Island at about 11.30am after having about an hour and 1/2 on a hot coach and walking round for an hour in the sun and a slow boat ride to the island as 1 engine was broken. We were not happy by this point and really struggling with dehydration.
We didn’t really see much of the evening entertainment as we were always so tired by the end of the day and we were in bed by 9.30 most nights so we missed the beach parties and shows. Whether it was the heat or the time difference I don’t know but it would be good if the hotel could put on some earlier entertainment for this reason.
The only have a couple of niggles about the holiday. The hard sell and pestering from H10 premium was annoying. We were duped into being taken for a 'free' breakfast (paid for in our all inclusive holiday). We thought it would be to the premium breakfast area but it actually involved being taken to the usual buffet area and being introduced to an annoying American guy and sharing breakfast with him whilst he tried to make chit chat and started trying to sell us the H10 holidays. Unfortunately we were too polite to tell him to get lost and after 2 hours of his selling tactics I started to get irritated and was sat there wondering why I was wasting my precious holiday time sat listening to his rubbish! Lesson learned - its OK to say NO!! We did also find we were also getting the hard sell from the vendors that visited the hotel who want loads of money from you are wont take no for an answer. We felt as though they think all English people are rich!
I do recommend you try and learn a bit of Spanish before you go – it will help with the haggling. I hadn’t realised that so many people can't speak English, especially the maids. We took both Pesos and dollars but it was quite hard working with pesos as everything is priced in dollars so I would say stick to them even though the exchange rate is probably not as good.
We do really miss being there and have got some amazing memories and would definitely go back again if we had the money.
