“Wonderful yet again”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2012

We have just returned from paradise again. This was our 16th visit to this hotel and yet again we had a wonderful time. The staff here are the finest in any hotel we have ever been to and cannot do enough for you. We have seen so many changes over the years and the hotel continues to be excellent. Nothing is too much trouble and the management, Kawana and David, are two of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet

We will be returning next February to what we now call our 2nd home

3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2012

This review is a bit late, but better late than never, right?! We arrived at the Iberostar Punta Cana in early August 2011 (which I believe is off-season in the Dominican Republic). We were a group of six adults, vacationing to celebrate our 30th birthdays. We're not an overly rowdy bunch, and fairly easy to please/entertain. I struggled between rating this resort a 3 or a 4, and would have loved an option for "3.5". In the end, although the staff were wonderful, the resort earns the 3 rating. I hope you find this review helpful, and please feel free to contact me with any questions you may have.

Arrival - Upon arrival at the Iberostar Punta Cana, approximately 3pm, we were met with a welcome drink at the check-in counter, but told that our rooms were not yet ready. No big deal, we waited a bit at the adjoining lobby bar, and were soon told the rooms were ready. Small glitch - one of the rooms was supposed to have two beds, but instead had only a King size bed and a sofa (not big enough to sleep on, more like a love-seat). To their credit, the front desk staff had another bed (full-size) set up in the room very quickly.

From here on, I will review the resort by area:

1. Room - Our room (junior suite in the newer building, close to lobby bar) was quite large and had a balcony. Unfortunately, the balcony overlooked a large green net hiding massive construction on the neighboring property. The construction could be loud in the morning hours, but it never woke us up, although it was a bit annoying once we were awake! The bathroom was a good size, with a double sink and tub/shower. The housekeeping staff cleaned the room wonderfully each day, and kept us stocked with bottled water and refreshments. They also left towel animals and flowers each day - a nice touch. NOTES: The air conditioning is controlled by a dial located on the wall next to the bed. "3" is the coldest setting. If the balcony door is not closed, the air conditioning will not run. Also, while the outlet voltage is the same as in the U.S., the plugs themselves are recessed, so you will need some sort of depth adaptor to use any U.S. plugs.

2. Dining - Dining was the one area of this trip we were a bit disappointed in. We were not looking for 5 star cuisine/presentation, but still felt the food and restaurants were a bit lacking. Even though we went to the reservation desk at 7am our first morning there, we were unable to get reservations to any of the a la carte restaurants at the resort - we were told they were all completely booked throughout our stay. We ended up eating solely at the buffets (the dinner buffet was actually pretty tasty, with some decent variety). WARNING: The dinner buffet is open air and NOT air conditioned. We spent every evening sweating through dinner - not an enjoyable experience. The a la carte restaurants, we noticed, are air conditioned.

3. Pool area - the pool itself is very large, comfortable temperature, and has trees surrounding parts of it to allow for some shady ares, which we appreciated. There are plenty of chairs and umbrellas to go around, we were never without somewhere to sit. There are bathrooms and a shower area near to the pool to rinse off any beach sand. The pool bar is close by the pool, but not in the pool itself - you'll have to get out of the water to refill that all important cocktail! Oddly, there was no one coming around at the pool or beach to bring drinks - it was strictly self-service. During the day, activities such as water aerobics and pool volleyball were led by the animation staff. There was some paint peeling in the pool itself, probably could use some refurbishment, but all in all, a fun and adequate experience.

4. Beach area - The beach was AWESOME!! One of the most beautiful beaches I've seen, and kept very clear of seaweed by the grounds staff. There were plenty of chairs and little palapas to provide shade. If you want a front row chair, you'll have to go early, but there were always seats to be had somewhere on the beach. The waves are very gentle, water was warm, clear and beautiful, and perfect for the snorkeling we did right on the beach! Also, the support spokes of the palapas were perfect for hanging our beach towels on so they had a chance at drying (it's so humid, nothing EVER dries, but at least they weren't soaking wet!) There is a beach bar available, and places to reserve side trips and tours on the beach.

5. Nightlife - The "Animation" shows didn't really excite us, although the staff worked hard to provide the entertainment. We spent a lot of our time at the lobby bar, where we were served each night by Juana, who was FANTASTIC!!! She remembered us and our drinks each night, and always spent a little time chatting with us. Drinks were good, and some were on the strong side...which we loved! We also went to the disco a few nights and had fun watching one of our group participate in the meringue contest. The snack bar outside the disco (hot dogs and fries) was perfect for a late night bite. We also did karaoke one night in the sports bar, and that was fun as well.

6. Excursions: We took a 1 hour snorkeling excursion ($40/pp) to the Bavaro Shallows, which was an excellent trip, lots to see and just the perfect amount of time. We booked the excursion right on the beach, and there were many other types of excursions that you could book as well.

OVERALL: Overall, this resort was relaxing and fun, with a beautiful beach and wonderful, friendly staff. Rooms are clean and comfortable. Dining was a bit disappointing. Would I return? Yes.

Room Tip: The renovated/"new" section is the farthest from the beach. Rooms overlooking the pool ar...

This hotel was wonderful, but for the beds. Our bed seemed hard as a rock, plus they only give you three pillows for a king sized bed.
The pools were clean and refreshing. We got a spot by the pool each day we were there, but the spots fill up if you're not out there by 9 or so.
The ocean front was clean, if not crowded. The best part by far was the small reef infront of the hotel. If you bring your own snorkel equipment, you could see all kinds of tropical fish!! It was exciting.
English is not the first language of many of the people working at the hotel but we got by just fine.
The food was good- I liked the variety. But a few people in our group disliked it. It's your run of the mill all inclusive buffet. I reccomend the rock star restaurant and the steak house for the a la carte options.
Overall, we had a wonderful time!!! I would defintly go back again!

This was our 6th trip to the Dominican Republic, and the third consecutive year we stayed at the Iberostar Punta Cana Hotel and Resort. We were so impressed with the resort and its amenities three years ago that we extended our holiday stay to four weeks the last two years. The rooms are well maintained and exceptionally clean. The grounds are impeccably manicured and beautiful. The food is attractively presented, delicious, and plentiful. The wait staff at the Higuley Buffet are professional and highly efficient. Most impressive in delivery of service are Julio, Duany, Hamlle. and Xiomara. They offered a welcoming greeting daily and made us feel like "family." Carmen in the Punta Cana lobby bar is also a delight and a credit to the services offered. It is obvious to us that the cooperative and cohesive work ethic we witnessed in the staff starts with strong leadership and professional mentoring. Director Kawana and her assistant, David, along with all their department heads, clearly have set the standard high for themselves and their staffs. We definitely plan to return next year and are seriously considering increasing the length of our stay to six weeks.

just got back a few days ago, we a had great time, Iberostar was amazing, the property was excellent , clean well kept. Rooms were clean and well updated no complaints at all. The staff were just awesome, very helpful and accommodating at all times. We were worried about the food after reading several reviews but they were certainly wrong, I have been to many all inclusive and have to say this place had the best food .
The entertainment team was great, they put on a great show every night and daily by the pool, they went out of their way to include all the guest, Star friends !!! Pantera, Jonathan, Emilio, thanks for making us laugh everyday and leaving us with some wonderful memoires, cannot remember everyone's names , so many wonderful staff members to mention , one server that really stood out was a gentleman name Febalous , not sure if this was his real name, he worked the overnight shift at the late night snack area, he was great, every night he would have a table ready for us with our favourite drink , very tentative . We did one excursion the Bravo Runners Safari tour, this tour was amazing, great way to learn about the people of the Dominican and the history of the their land . One night we went off the resort to a club called Imagine which was organized through Air Transat reps, great place, built inside of a cave, well worth checking out. I highly recommend this resort to anyone, good mix of people at the resort.

My family and I traveled with our family friends for 7 nights this past February. The word average fits this hotel perfectly. Lets start of by saying the beach was amazing and you always were guaranteed a chair. The rooms were nothing special with not great views. For breakfast the buffet was fine and for lunch it was very repetitive day after day. Once again nothing special. For dinner the Japanese restaurant was great and the seafood was too. All other nights we ate at the buffet for a fine meal. Once again nothing special. The grounds of the resort were kept very neat and there were always security guards everywhere. The pool was very large but we did not use it that often. Now for the staff, this was absolutely one major flaw. Each staff member told you something different and couldn't speak great English. This is one thing that the resort needs to fix. Another thing is the internet access, the hotel needs to update the whole system. The entertainment was terrible but there always seemed to be a big crowd. We went swimming with the dolphins which was probably the best part of the trip. The golf corse was kept in great condition and was very nice. Overall if your looking for a great deal and want to get out of your town for a week to nice weather, you would maybe like to consider this hotel as an option. We would definitely not go back.

we have been in Iberostar Punta Cana for 11 days in Feb 2012. I have to say it was very unfortunate vacation for us and our friends who stayed at Iberostar Dominicana hotel. There were 4 adults and 2 kids of 3 and 5 years old. We all got sick.
so advice #1 - always have a health insurance otherwise you will be ripped off by the local "doctors". They charge over $200 per a visit (at least it's what they told our insurance company) and give the same treatment to any disease! My baby got bitten by mosquitoes and developed very bad reaction. Our friends got a flu or smth. I developed some skin allergy. Guess what? all of us got the same treatment. Ibuprofen+antibiotics and some skin cream in our case. It helped our baby only (which I am very happy about) and told doctors that the medicine they gave to her didn't work for me (I took adults dosage of course) - but still they gave me absolutely the same.
Advice #2 - bring bug repellent and your own medications- will come very handy.
Anyway it's a lyrical epilogue as has no relation to the hotel.

As our friends stayed at Dominicana we had a possibility to compare both. No doubt about Dominicana is better, newer and fresher.
Advice #3 - book Iberostar Dominicana instead of Punta Cana. They cost the same and if not mislead by our travel agent we would have booked Dominicana. They share the same facilities and grounds.
The room looked quite outdated, old furniture, so I would say 3* the most.
Room service was great! those girls really know what they do. First 2 days we tried to tip them with canadian dollars but they didnt take them. so we had to get USD. BTW the quality of cleaning was the same - perfect!
Advice #4. Bring USD for tips
Food was good too - I wish they had worse choice and quality. Gained some weight I guess :). I would love although to see some plain food suitable for small children, diabetics, people on a diet. Like plain boiled meat instead of grilled/fried one
Grounds are great too - very green, a lot of flowers, flamingos, turtles, etc. well kept too.
Great animation team I guess - when you are travelling with small children on your own...well I guess night life is not for you :). But hearing all those happy screams and seeing a bit of nightlife paradise I would say those guys know how to make everyone happy :)

Now the worst part. Although all personnel seems to be professional and friendly there was one guy at the reception who spoiled it all. Mateo was his name. I guess he was some kind of a manager there as always looked very proud of himself. He was unfriendly, unhelpful and made us feel like he is not there to hep you but we are here to serve him. We had a late flight and our baby got sick again. She was coughing, has a fever so felt weak and we needed to make sure we will have place to stay in so that she can have a rest. So I went and asked this guy to arrange us a late checkout and pay whatever needed. He refused and said I can only do it the day before our departure. It was ridiculous as other lady at the reception did it without any issues and we paid for a late checkout.

Our flight got delayed for 5 hours and as I said before we had a sick 3 year old baby and it was pretty late - 10PM and she was sleeping on a sofa at the lobby. I asked Mateo again if he can check the status of our flight - guess what he said? NO, I can't. I was pissed off!!! He knew about our sick child, he saw her sleeping uncomfortably on the sofa just in front of the reception desk, he knew that we had a trip to the airport and came back due to the flight delay and he didn't want to move his butt just to give us some help! Just to dial airport number and check the status of our flight! OK, we have already checked out - but does it justify his behavior? So I again asked a very nice and helpful lady Jazmin (she is really great and I wish Iberostar hired more of her kind and got rid of Mateo). she called to the airport and in 5 minutes told me about our departure time.

Honestly, I didn't expect such relation from any star hotel saying nothing about 5* Iberostar claims itself to be. Such people as Mateo should not be admitted to deal with clients as they use this opportunity to show people that they have power and authority instead of helping and assisting. Later when I browsed other people reviews I saw that I am not the first one to be unhappy with that guy. So may be it's a sign to Iberostar management to make a decision on that guy as he is supposed to be Iberostar's face and this face looks very ugly to me.
