“I got what I payed for!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 8, 2014

I bought this trip from Apple Vacations, fearing a little because it was a very cheap deal and after reading some of the reviews concerning the hotel itself. I went with my 13 year old grandson, and had a wonderful time! After a 12 hour flight, we checked in on June 28 at 5pm and the person at the front desk said my room was not ready so why didn't we go to the pool bar and have a drink and come back in an hour! I answered him that it was way passed check-in time (3pm), we were very tired after the long flight and I wanted my room NOW. He gave it to us immediately ! I still don't undestand his attitude. Our room was located on the 2nd floor ( 4425 ) near the Spa and Theater. Gardens are beautiful, food could be better. Very helpful and nice staff.

Room Tip: Hotel is very big : there is a lot of walking to be done to go from one place to another. Definitely...

Myself and a large group went to Punta Cana and stayed at this resort. Our stay was from 06/21-06/27. What a surprise. Of course we told up front that our room would not be ready. However, when the rooms were ready it was such a disappoitnemnt. Of course it looked nothing like the pictures. They had us all in bungalows. What I quickly found out was it's all about money. So we paid 144.00 to upgrade! Not an upgrade.Once we were in the room the chair was flithy! It had spots all over it. The comforter was dingy as well as the towels. Our toliet stopped working. Most nights we had to pour water from the trash can into the toliet in order for it to flush! The outside property itself was beautiful. However, We would not stay here again.

I read several reviews the week before we left. I was a little worried. Here are a couple of things I suggest:
1. Take wash clothes or scrubbie/loufa
2. Take a power strip. Someone complained about electric outlets being hard to get to. We used the plug from the TV, and had plenty of plugs for our devices. There was a hair dryer & a plug with That as well.

Overall we had an enjoyable time. The lights & A/C are run by your room key, ask for 2 room keys! We came back each day to a warm room because the A/C only works when room key is in the key card receptor. Many complained about the food. We had no problems with it. All was good. Yes, it was a little bit of a hassle to have to make reservations to eat at the restaurants each morning-but on the other hand you it was nice to be able to walk right in to the restaurant & be seated.
Beach was beautiful, pool areas were nice as well. People don't always clean up after themselves, leaving their drink cups along the sides of the pool, but it was always cleaned up every morning. Would have liked more shade at both the beach & pool areas. Everyone would crowd around the palm trees on the beach-if you got there early enough. We got an awesome deal on our flight & hotel stay, so overall we were pleased with our trip.

Resort is beautiful. The gardens are landscaped and kept in pristine condition. No fault with cleanliness around the resort or in the accommodation itself. Staff are friendly and helpful; nothing is too much trouble!

Food was at times a little hit and miss and each of us in our party of 4 did have digestive problems intermittently throughout the two weeks we were there. Burgers at Pikolo can be undercooked - a word of warning after a traveller became very unwell the day we were departine home. Water is definately not for drinking, come to think of it even the bottled water caused me problems. There is always something edible in the buffet resaurant at all mealtimes; some of the other complaints about this resort seem a little unfair now we have travelled and seen for ourselves.

There are lots of external sales parties allowed on site and they can be a little overbearing and harrassing at times. There is a market type shopping experience twice a week; they can be avoided by walking around the perimiter of the resort instead of via the main throughfair; their tactics can be overbearing and they don't like you to say no - if you are looking for relaxation like we were this is definately a stress enhancing moment. Their comments can be rude too.....

The two pools are lovely and big; there is a quiet pool at the back of Cafe Dominicana and much more relaxing than the pool in the centre of the resort next to reception this appears where most activities take place and the pool is occupied from open to close daily. On the other hand head to the beach, just a short walk through the resort - it's beautiful.

Cannot really fault anything with the resort and would recommend. the only lowlight was our digestive upset - soon cured with a bottle of pepto-bismol available in two of the shops on resort.

Shopping is very close by and worth a mooch. Got some bargains.

Look out for the wildlife throughout the resort; every turn holds something new.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Superior french balcony room - very nice!

It was an excellent experience with my family and friends! The food was okay and the service too. Very nice beach and pools. I liked the bars inside the pools and the night shows were very entertaining too. I recommend this place!

I will keep my review short as there are plenty of other reviews out there to detail the positives and negatives of IFA. I do want to share a few things that I think would be important when choosing a resort for your vacation. First, if you elect to stay at IFA, I would suggest not selecting the higher priced rooms or paying for an upgrade when you arrive. We booked a higher level room and when we arrived the room we were given had an exceptional view of the back of a storage closet. The room is essentially a studio layout where the bathroom and shower have glass doors and a glass wall overlooking the bedroom. This would be fine for couples perhaps but was awkward for families as you can see EVERYTHING. I didn't realize what a French balcony was when we booked this, but apparently it is a window that opens, as none of the rooms in this resort had a traditional balcony, or any outside sitting area (in the premium/upgrade section). We found there are no rooms overlooking or in the proximity of the beach, and the 'premium/upgrade' rooms are those close to the main pool and buffet restaurants. This area is fine, but after several days we elected to downgrade our room to move to the other area of the resort, where each room has a patio and outside sitting area, and the restroom actually has a door that closes. Apparently there is also a pool in this section which we did not realize until we were leaving. This is also where all of the a la carte restaurants are located. It is much quieter than the other section, and I felt better for families and I would even say better for any traveler given the lower cost and the option to have an outside sitting area. There were also roosters, peacocks and flamingos wandering around this area that were entertaining to watch.

We were very surprised at the lack of customer service you get here at IFA. Understandably we arrived with a busload of other traveler's checking in, but I've never stayed at an all-inclusive resort that caters to vacationers before that didn't offer you a welcome drink when you arrive (no big deal) or even give you an intro to the resort to let you know where to find things like restaurants and such. We basically got handed a key and did not get welcomed at all. When we went to the front desk for service issues (keys consistently not working 3-4 times during our stay), there were clerks at the desk who basically ignored you and didn't even look up when you arrived looking for help (or for a couple minutes thereafter until someone else turned up). As you walk around the resort, every single resort worker we walked by (which was many) looked absolutely miserable to be there and never said hello or even looked in your direction. This is quite a bit different than the welcome feeling we've received at every other resort we've stayed at (which are many) in several different countries, including others in the DR.

The food in the buffets was servicable at best, breakfast was the best meal there and I didn't mind that it was the exact same options every day because really, how many different things can you really serve for breakfast? But lunch and dinner were consistently a disappointment. The best option is the pasta bar and fresh fruit bars I thought, but really on the whole the food was bland and judging by the food poisoning everyone in our group left with, really not very good.

I believe there were 3 or 4 a la carte restaurants to choose from when we stayed (there is an Italian restaurant on the premises also, but apparently this either closed or has not yet opened for anything but a lunch buffet as we were told there is no Italian restaurant when we tried to make reservations. Restaurant reservations are probably the most off-putting part of your stay. You are only allowed to make a same-day reservation (read: because of the poor quality of the buffet food, you are going to find yourself waking up every morning to go stand in a line with one attendant trying to make reservations for a line of 70 plus people starting at 7am every morning). The restaurants themselves we found to all be very good, so no complaints there.

All of which goes to say, there are alot of very good a reasons why this resort is likely less expensive than many similar options in the DR. The busload of folks that left to go to the airport with us all left similarly disappointed, and not one of them intended to return to the DR based on this experience (which is unfortunate, because the DR is really a beautiful place, and there are several much MUCH nicer resorts you could choose for an affordable all-inclusive vacation). If your intent is to go on a beach vacation where you spend your whole day on the beach, then you will probably have a great time here; however, if you are looking for a place with activities, employees who seem engaged and happy, entertainment, and good dining options, I would definitely DEFINITELY look elsewhere as this place fails at all of the above. Try researching Paradisus Palma Real resort instead - it is comparably priced, a much better vacation experience, and less than a mile down the road from this place.
