“Barcelo Bavaro - Punta Cana”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 16, 2013

This was a beautiful hotel - kept very clean. The rooms were nice and big and we had a gorgeious view of the beach from our room! One complaint would be the hot tub - it leaked so you could not keep it full or it would overflow... weak pressure! Restaurants were very good - especially the ones that you needed reservations at... which we were never told about when we checked in....luckily we found out that you have to make reservations for four restaurants ahead of time. Once we knew, the process was easy. I recommend bringing your own computer - I used the internet center and had a timed period of use and the computer was not working properly, kept freezing, consequently I had to change then I ran out of time trying to figure out my answer to a security ? because it didn't recognize the computer/country. All in all it was a great place to stay - entertainment every night - beaches are kept very clean - grounds kept very nice. Staff very pleasant and good service at bars and restaurants. This hotel is way off the street away from the "city" and it is so huge it is like a little city in itself. I would definitely recommend it for anyone looking for a nice place to stay.

Room Tip: don't stay on first floor - lots of crabs around the grounds,,, we stayed on third floor - didn...

There were a group of 4 of us (2 couples) who spent one week on the facility, in the adults only section. Food was great. Service, phenomenal. We spent one day at the swim-up bar, and as expected it was a bit child-ridden. Adult children, too. Otherwise, the overall clientele being of more European and Russian background, things on the adults side were chill and enjoyable.
The restaurants were all wonderful except for LaBrisa. Don't go to that one. Try to eat foods you don't get at home. Enjoy the experience!
We really didn't do much except drink, eat, sleep, and tan, but all of it was made more enjoyable by the staff and the location.
Things which could be considered downers: room service is extra and is only thing (besides Strikers Sports Bar) for food outside of buffet hours. No food out at the pools. Hard to communicate special drink orders outside the "norms". That's it.....really!
Things which stood out for us: ask and you shall receive (but you have to ask), excellent staff, great restaurants, wonderful buffet, great coffee, clean beach, manicured landscape, elaborate central (main) area, beds were exceptionally ergonomic (top grade).
Tips: try the buffet for supper and have them make you lobster tails...get there early in the shift like 6-8p.; do NOT do any upgrades, no need to get to the pool early (plenty of chairs), kayaks and hobie cats are FREE just sign up, make it a point to try Chez Gourmet Restaurant, bring your own smokes and cigars.

I was truly concerned regarding our upcoming 2 week stay at this resort. As soon as we arrived the staff could not do enough to help us accommodate. Our check-in/out was completed within 5 minutes. The concierge staff were especially helpful in assisting us in booking our meals and excursions. The housekeeper, Rosario C, could not do enough for us. She was generous in the care and time that she spent. Our room was always spotless, towels ample, and we always looked forward to the special little touches that she would leave for us (the towel doves especially). My fiancé, child, and I felt like we were family there.
The manager was easily accessible and I enjoyed learning Spanish.
The food was different, but acceptable. Some specific groups were quite rude, abrasive, and aggressive when in line at the buffets and while waiting for assistance from staff.
The biggest issue I had was the smoking everywhere. People would but their cigarettes on the beach, in drinks, wherever they chose. I found it especially difficult to withstand when children were exposed to this behavior as well.
Thank you so very much for your hospitality and genuine interest in my holiday. We will be back.

Room Tip: Being in the 2000 block of rooms provided a nice quiet view. If you can ask for a view of the beach...

This is a great resort for families. The staff is excellent with children, we traveled with a 9 month old and couldn't have felt more welcome, even when dining at the restaurants. the beach is very safe and calm, with beautiful white sand and it was easy to take the baby in the water. The restaurants were excellent, there was plenty of variety. I did however think the French restaurant was a bit overrated - we had better meals at Kyoto (Japanese) and the Italian restaurant. Both my lobster bisque and entree came out cold, but no one else in my party had this problem. They also forgot our coffee, but hey, everyone has a bad day now and then. I wouldn't bother with room service - a turkey baguette was literally turkey and bread - nothing else. We did not try it for breakfast, which I heard was better. The staff is trained exceptionally well - from housekeepers to bellboys to groundskeepers everyone was super friendly and accommodating. I don't think I saw a single employee the entire time I was there that didn't smile and say hello when greeted. Some people complain about the language barrier, but honestly we are the ones in their country and they really try to communicate the best they can. There were always fluent English speaking staff at Club Premium if you really needed something. Club Premium was a definite must, worth the extra money. We had no problem getting dinner reservations, and whenever we needed anything, they took care of it right away. My parents were with us, and we requested adjoining rooms or rooms close together, and balconies of which we had neither when we arrived. Julio in club premium worked very hard to find us rooms that would work as the hotel was full when we arrived. It took an extra day, but we were able to upgrade to a master suite in building 5, with an adjoining room. We were able to take advantage of our coupon to upgrade, so it only cost us $200 for this upgrade to a room twice the size of the oceanfront deluxe premium, which we thought was an exceptional deal. The rooms were beautiful, and housekeeping was very thorough, we always had fresh towels and plenty of water. We did not tip them until the end of our stay, and it did not effect service at all. Mini bar was always replenished too. The kids water park (free one) was great for young kids - did not see any need to go to Pirate's Island, even though it was included. My husband and I had intended on going by ourselves one day, but after walking around it, it did not really appeal. The mini-golf was a full 18 hole course that was included also, and a lot of fun! Overall, a true 5 star resort, I would definitely consider returning!

Room Tip: If you do not want to walk far - stay in building 4 or 5 to be close to everything.

My husband and I just returned home from our week stay at this resort. This was our first time ever visiting Dominican Republic, actually first time ever staying at a resort outside the U.S. And our stay was wonderful!!! We purchased the Club Premium package, and it was worth every cent!

Upon our arrival, May 4, we were greeted and escorted to the Club Premium lounge. The staff greeted us and offered us beverages of our choice while we waited. After we received our drinks, Ms A. Rosario greeted us and assisted us with checking in. She was very nice and very professional. She assured us that our room was perfect, and she was right!!! We were in room 3235 and we couldn't ask for a better room. By reading the reviews, I thought I wanted to be in the 6000 block, however that was too far from everything. The 3000 block was far enough for me, yet still close to the lobby and restaurants.

Once we got to our room, a server from room service brought us our free champagne and rum. However, the server didn't give us the rum right away. He whispered to us and said that he had something special and it was a secret. It was the Ron Barcelo Imperial Rum, which he said that the cost was about $75, however, some ppl gave him $25 for it and we could have it if we just gave him something. Well, I thought we were suppose to get free rum, but I couldn't remember if we were suppose to get free rum or not. I wasn't going to give him that much money, and he didn't seem like he was trying to scam us, so we just gave him $5. He also said that he wanted to make sure we enjoyed our stay so he wanted us to have it. He was very smooth with his words. About an hour later, we received a letter that had a list of what all our room came with. Free rum was one of them!! I couldn't believe it!! He got us!!! The next day, we went to Club premium and a receptionist asked if we receive our champagne and rum, and we told her we did however we had to pay for the rum. She said she would handle it, and said we were not suppose to give anymore money for it. She apologized profusely and assured us she was going to talk with his manager. The next day, we ran into Ms Rosario, and she asked how we were enjoying everything. We told her about the incident and she also apologized. She couldn't believe that the waiter did that. She was very sympathetic and understood that we were not only upset that he took advantage of us, but the fact that we allowed him to, and we felt stupid. She said that we deserved not only that bottle of rum, but also another. And she followed through. We later received not only another bottle of rum but also another bottle of champagne. And the manager himself with another waiter came to deliver them. I was very surprised but it showed how much they really cared about their guest and their happiness.

The restaurants were nice. However the service was a bit slow. Some were better than others, but overall they were good. Ms Rosario also asked about our experiences at the a la Cart restaurants. She really wanted to make sure we were receiving the best service ever.

Overall, our stay at this resort was awesome!!! The weather was perfect and we meet some great people. Can't wait until we can return!!!

Room Tip: If you can afford it, purchase Club Premium!!! 3000 block was perfect for us!! Room was oceanfront...

I stayed at the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe from May 8 - May 13 with my boyfriend and another couple and we all had a great time! We are a lively group in our late 20's/early 30's. Here’s a breakdown of how our vacation went.

Check-in: A+

No line at check-in when we arrived and only took about five minutes. We were greeted pleasantly with drinks and then guest services assisted us with booking our restaurant and golf reservations. We didn’t do club premium, but didn’t think it was necessary. You can purchase WIFI internet in your room at the gift store. Four days of internet was $35 for us. The bellboy was friendly and gave us a brief tour of where places were on our way to our rooms.

Rooms: A

Rooms were updated and clean. We loved the rainfall shower. We had the cheapest level room, but still had a great view of the golf course lake. Rooms have an iPod docking station, which was cool, and are extremely soundproof because we were blasting our music, but our friends staying in the room next door couldn’t even tell we had music on.

Food: A-

We stayed 5 nights and were given 3 restaurant reservation tickets to use at the a la carte restaurants, which were wonderful. The Kyoto japanese was our favorite. Make sure to specifically request a teppenyaki table in your reservation so you can see them prepare your food in front of you. I liked the Santa Fe steakhouse a lot too. The Mexican Lindo was good, but not great. The main buffet food was only OK, but there are so many options, everyone can find something they like. The Hoya 19 golf restaurant was the worst. The service and food at that restaurant was terrible. Ordered fries that never arrived. Ordered a coke that never arrived. It’s a shame because the service everywhere else on the resort was wonderful. Sports bar has typical bar food that isn’t that great, but I loved that they had a soft serve ice cream machine and was open 24 hours. FYI, a la carte restaurants have a dress code. Men must wear long pants (jeans are fine), closed toe shoes (running shoes are fine) and a shirt with sleeves. Women can get away with more, but no shorts and no beach flip flops.

Beach: A+

Bavaro beach is gorgeous and clean. They have machines that clean up the seaweed early every morning. The water is warm and very calm. There are no waves because of the coral reef. There are plenty of lounge chairs and lots of beautiful palm trees. There are lots of watersports available on the beach. Resort provides free kayaks, paddleboats, sailboats and snorkel gear. There are also beach vendors selling banana boat rides ($10), great mable boat rides ($15), party boat rides, glass bottom snorkel tour ($35), parasail and many others. The great mable boat was my favorite. It’s an inflatable red boat that gets pulled behind a motor boat, goes fast and spins around a lot. The resort also has fun free activities on the beach like darts contest, horse shoes and dance lessons. The pool bar is only steps away from the beach.

Pool: A-

The main pool is beautiful and has a swim up bar with great drinks and service. There are built in beach loungers in the pool that were fun to lay out on. We never had to leave our towels early because there were plenty of lounge chairs around the pool. There’s a bridge that divides it into two sections, so mostly adults stay on the side with the swim up bar and families swim on the other side. Only downside was the pool water is only lukewarm. On warm days the water feels good, but on overcast days it felt way too cold for me and there is no jacuzzi.

Entertainment: A+

The disco is very fun and draws a large crowd. They have great drinks and switch the music between English and Spanish speaking. The casino is very elegant and has a nice bar. Only downside with the casino is that it’s pretty small and only has slots, blackjack, poker and roulette. Would have been nice if they’d had a craps table, but no dice. I liked the nightly entertainment shows at the grand theater, which is very large and the waiters frequently come by your seats to ask if you want drinks. Sports bar is awesome. There are lots of TVs, so you can see just about any sport you want. We were able to watch the NBA basketball and NHL hockey playoff games, which was great. They also have one big screen with stadium seating. There’s free mini golf and paddle tennis courts, which looked fun. There's a kids club and teen club with waterpark, video game room, laser tag, etc.

Helpful Tips:

Learn a few Spanish phrases before you go such as "Cuanto cuesta?" which means "How much does it cost?" Leave a note for the maid if you want more towels or beers that says "Mas toallas por favor" or "Mas cervezas por favor" with a tip and they'll take good care of you. If you see a bartender serve a drink you like, ask "Que es esto" which means "What is that?" and then order the same. If you like fruity drinks, try the Miami Vice, which is a raspberry/coconut frozen drink, a Sammy Sosa, which is a red/yellow/green stripe frozen drink, a Chi Chi con vodka, which is like an alcoholic orange julius, or my favorite, a limonada con vodka, which is an alcoholic lemonade.

Overall, we had a blast and would definitely recommend the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe!

Room Tip: All the rooms are good. Stayed in Bldg 8 golf section room with beautiful view of lake.

We just returned from a fabulous week in this hotel. The hotel was running at full capacity but we had plenty of room. The beach is beautiful, and the facilities are gorgeous. We were impressed by the staff, they worked very hard and they are friendly and professional. We upgraded to Club Premium and that helped with the restaurant reservations. Roxana at the Club was very helpful, but they all are fantastic The Spa is beautiful and very clean. The rooms are well kept and comfortable.
We had breakfast at the buffets or at the Club Premium lounge. We had lunch at the Hoyo 19 restaurant by the golf section. The a la carte restaurants were first class. All the food was fresh and well prepared. They call things different than we do. The translations in the menu can be misleading, for example Rocket is Chicken! You are in a foreign country and things are cooked a little bit different, but we had superb meals. When in doubt ask.
We found the night shows to be mediocre, but we found other things to do.
We are already planning our next visit. We highly recommend this hotel.

Room Tip: We were at the golf area and paid extra for the Club Premium service. The golf section is very quiet...
