Sorry for the late review. I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights after I changed my flight due to a snow storm at home (who wants to come home to that?!). The purpose of my trip was to find a resort where I can celebrate my wedding with friends and family in 2014. The hotel I stayed at before this one was Bahia Principe Esmeralda which I reviewed a few months back. Since we didn't find what we were looking for there, we decided to try a different place.
Despite the difference in rating between these two resorts, we thought that Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe was a lot better for what we were looking for. This resort is fully wheelchair accessible with elevators in every building. From what I was told, and read, this hotel was completely renovated 3yrs ago so it's practically brand new. The main lobby is massive with two floors. Check-in/out is on the 2nd floor while shops are on the first floor. Bring a spending budget in case you like to shop! We bought their internet service and it was worth it because we were able to use it in any part of the hotel and not just the lobby. Including for our skype calls back home.
There is a huge children's pool area, including wave pool, which is adjacent to rooms for families with small children. I'm not sure if these rooms are more expensive though. I believe the wave pool may have an extra fee so research that if you are interested. I hate to compare, but Bahia Principe also has a children's area but you have to take a shuttle because of how far it might be from your room. Essentially, it would be a 15-20 min adventure from the Esmeralda side. They also have a kiddie club house with a juice bar and a teen club that opens in the evening (with a hard rock store right outside so be careful if your teen likes to shop).
they have everything else right in the resort. The Catholic church is open on weekends and is right next to the kids area with views to their golf course, which is next to the church. There is a train that goes to the entire resort so there's not real need to walk. most of their walkways have shade so no uneven tans if you like to stay active. On the other side of the resort, they have a massive convention center for people wishing to have big meetings and hopefully for our wedding reception. this is were the garden gazebo is located so there is total privacy. They have a casino, video game and table game area with bars in each place. A cigar bar and coffee bar was also located in the main lobby.
Their restaurants were very good but service was horrible. Our water cups were empty for at least 10mins at the japanese restaurant and we were not offered anything else besides water. But their sushi was great and everything was well prepared. The other restaurant we tried was the steak house. It was good, not excellent but the food was cooked well (I eat steak medium). Service was better than at the japanese place but still could use some improvement. Stay away from their red wine. Mixed drinks at the other bars were delicious and properly made.
The lunch buffet was insane the first day we were there because it took us like 5-10mins to find a clean table. The other days were fine so I think it was due to the rain during lunch hour that first day. I thought the buffet food was excellent with their traditional dominican food cooked to perfection. They had a vast variety of food for a lot of different people which is what you want from a buffet. The service wasn't great here either but one of their cook was very very nice and attentive. Our glasses were rarely empty which is a huge plus. the breakfast was also here and it was delicious.
The entire resort was well maintained and clean. We saw a security guard walking the beach so it was kind of nice knowing that we were safe walking at night. The best part of all is that all their rooms were constructed parallel to the beach. no need to take shuttles. there were walkways parallel to the beach in case you wanted to enjoy the view or grab a bite to eat at the main lobby. their walkout rooms are next to the walkway so is not as private but the beach is only a few steps away.
In conclusion, we have pencilled in our wedding date at this resort so we are looking forward to returning soon. Sure the service wasn't great but the food and drinks were good. Their garden gazebo is also private and their convention rooms are great for our reception. The resort is kids friendly and can fully accommodate a family member that is in a wheelchair.
for those that are interested, the beach gazebo is not private at all which we don't appreciate. nonetheless, it was very nice.
