“Impressive hotel despite the "lower" ratings”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 7, 2013

Sorry for the late review. I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights after I changed my flight due to a snow storm at home (who wants to come home to that?!). The purpose of my trip was to find a resort where I can celebrate my wedding with friends and family in 2014. The hotel I stayed at before this one was Bahia Principe Esmeralda which I reviewed a few months back. Since we didn't find what we were looking for there, we decided to try a different place.

Despite the difference in rating between these two resorts, we thought that Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe was a lot better for what we were looking for. This resort is fully wheelchair accessible with elevators in every building. From what I was told, and read, this hotel was completely renovated 3yrs ago so it's practically brand new. The main lobby is massive with two floors. Check-in/out is on the 2nd floor while shops are on the first floor. Bring a spending budget in case you like to shop! We bought their internet service and it was worth it because we were able to use it in any part of the hotel and not just the lobby. Including for our skype calls back home.

There is a huge children's pool area, including wave pool, which is adjacent to rooms for families with small children. I'm not sure if these rooms are more expensive though. I believe the wave pool may have an extra fee so research that if you are interested. I hate to compare, but Bahia Principe also has a children's area but you have to take a shuttle because of how far it might be from your room. Essentially, it would be a 15-20 min adventure from the Esmeralda side. They also have a kiddie club house with a juice bar and a teen club that opens in the evening (with a hard rock store right outside so be careful if your teen likes to shop).

they have everything else right in the resort. The Catholic church is open on weekends and is right next to the kids area with views to their golf course, which is next to the church. There is a train that goes to the entire resort so there's not real need to walk. most of their walkways have shade so no uneven tans if you like to stay active. On the other side of the resort, they have a massive convention center for people wishing to have big meetings and hopefully for our wedding reception. this is were the garden gazebo is located so there is total privacy. They have a casino, video game and table game area with bars in each place. A cigar bar and coffee bar was also located in the main lobby.

Their restaurants were very good but service was horrible. Our water cups were empty for at least 10mins at the japanese restaurant and we were not offered anything else besides water. But their sushi was great and everything was well prepared. The other restaurant we tried was the steak house. It was good, not excellent but the food was cooked well (I eat steak medium). Service was better than at the japanese place but still could use some improvement. Stay away from their red wine. Mixed drinks at the other bars were delicious and properly made.

The lunch buffet was insane the first day we were there because it took us like 5-10mins to find a clean table. The other days were fine so I think it was due to the rain during lunch hour that first day. I thought the buffet food was excellent with their traditional dominican food cooked to perfection. They had a vast variety of food for a lot of different people which is what you want from a buffet. The service wasn't great here either but one of their cook was very very nice and attentive. Our glasses were rarely empty which is a huge plus. the breakfast was also here and it was delicious.

The entire resort was well maintained and clean. We saw a security guard walking the beach so it was kind of nice knowing that we were safe walking at night. The best part of all is that all their rooms were constructed parallel to the beach. no need to take shuttles. there were walkways parallel to the beach in case you wanted to enjoy the view or grab a bite to eat at the main lobby. their walkout rooms are next to the walkway so is not as private but the beach is only a few steps away.

In conclusion, we have pencilled in our wedding date at this resort so we are looking forward to returning soon. Sure the service wasn't great but the food and drinks were good. Their garden gazebo is also private and their convention rooms are great for our reception. The resort is kids friendly and can fully accommodate a family member that is in a wheelchair.

for those that are interested, the beach gazebo is not private at all which we don't appreciate. nonetheless, it was very nice.

The beach is the nicest we have been to. Service in the buffets was a bit erratic, sometimes good sometimes bad. Usually bad when it was crowded. The servers seemed to get over whelmed and walk around in circles with big water bottles. The food was good but we got a little sick of the buffet and wished we had made reservations every night in the restaurants. Discovered the 19th hole restaurant on the last day when our children and grandchildren had left. Had a fabulous sit down lunch. None of the restaurants are open for breakfast or lunch. Was told the golf course restaurant served breakfast too which would have been a nice break from the hectic buffets.Golf course looked beautiful but didn't see anyone using it. Great mini golf course. Pools were first class. Knacks and hobie cats were free.

I was somewhat apprehensive about our 5th trip to Punta Cana--as I was tired of the worn resorts we had stayed at in the past. With the help of a travel agent, we booked Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe for mid March. Our 15 year old daughter counted down the days, read many reviews and was unsure what to expect. She was convinced that we needed to upgrade to the Preferred Club, but we were told it would add about $800 per guest to our party of 4, which was out of the question. Check in was the smoothest ever and my husband's blood pressure remained in check. My daughter brought a friend with her and we had booked what we thought were adjoining rooms. It turned out to our delight that we had 2 separate beautiful family suites, each with 2 bedrooms and an outdoor private jaccuzzi. It was located near the childrens waterpark, the quaint Catholic church with a beautiful view of the golf course. It was a short walk to everything else---dining, pool and beach. The stonework around the pools, the walkways and throughout the structures were pristine and gorgeous. The food was good and we made reservations for the speciality restaurants immediately upon arrival fearful they were booked, but had no issues. The Michael Jackson show was truly a Las Vegas type production and the theatre for entertainment was two tiered, open air and magnificent!! Our oldest daughter, now in college could not join us and we were guilt ridden the entire time thinking of how much she would have enjoyed the resort. As a result, we have promised to go back and take her with next time!!!

My boyfriend and I stayed here for a quick 3 day weekend trip to celebrate my 30th bday. The resort is beautiful and huge! We ended up getting an upgrade to a family room suite! The food was great and so much to choose from, even if you are a picky eater you will find something you like. The beach is amazing clear blue calm water (great for a amature swimmer like me). The only dissapointment was that I had a few things taken from my room, swimsuit and accessories. I was very upset by this as it was an outfit I prepared for my bday celebration. I hate to think the worst of people, but i am sure it was the cleaning women. When we got back to the room, the only thing that was cleaned was the garbage, beds, and they replaced one towel (which was not enough for two of us obviously). We went to the front desk but they couldn't do anything. I tried very hard not to let this ruin my trip as these are material things that can be replaced, but I feel so violated that someone would go into my bag. So...all in all great place but bring a lock for your suitcase! There is a small safe for your other smaller belongings.

Dear Guest,

Thank you very much for having chosen Barceló Bávaro Palace Deluxe for your vacation and to celebrate your birthday.

Even though, we are glad to know that in general you had a nice time with us thanks to our food concepts, our Caribbean sea, among others; we honestly regret the uncommon situation you commented us in your review since our guests’ wellbeing and security are two of the most important things we care about. It is important to remark that our staff is not allowed to take any personal items during the daily operation and our complex has ins and outs control points of security where our personnel is revised every day before and after their work-time as a measure of security. Nevertheless, we assure you that we will give the matter the proper attention.

Despite of this, we would appreciate to have the opportunity to welcome you once again and demonstrate you our commitment to excellence service and our customers’ satisfaction.

First time staying at this beautiful hotel. Stayed from April 30 - May 5th. The weather was great but we had cloudy intervals and it was windy. We would not go back during this time again. Breakdown: HOTEL/BEACH is gigantic, beautiful artestry, large theatre and many restaurants to pick from. It was extremely clean, probably due to the fact that you can not eat by the pool. The beach was calm and a bit chilly at times. At the beach you will see some woman walking by topless. Its your choice if you think this is good. I found it uncomfortable. The beach is a beautiful green but had alot of seaweed in the entrance to the water but they do clean it up. There is also exercising on the beach. They played great music at the beach but if you are by the pool on a certain side, you will be hearing jazz instead of great latin music. DRINKS: We thought since it was a 4 1/2 star hotel the drinks would not be watered down but they were. It took a few drinks to even feel a slight buzz. note: MUST bring dollar bills for tiping on everything. They will take care of you better. CONS: They only allow one beach towel per person. This is terrible. We stayed at a 3 1/2 star hotel in PC 2 years ago and we had as many towels as we wanted. HUGE CON: We reserved the mastersuite beach view and our view was of the garden and across the way were the other hotel rooms (which you can see right into their room if they don't close the curtins). We wanted to upgrade to ocean front but it was $200/day. These are called the PREMIER rooms which are the ONLY ones that are really ocean front right on the beach. Every other room in this hotel will NOT be ocean front. So unless you want to shell out the big bucks, you'll get the view we had. We are view people and did not appreciate the view. Other hotels have more categories of ocean front rooms with different prices. And for the extra money we were going to have the same exact room. Not worth it. PRO: The room was clean, comfy bed but the shower has that rainforest effect, we opted tor the shower handle which had power. We enjoyed the jacuzzi but don't go in without your bathing suit. The balcony has a mesh which you can bring down for privacy. CON: EVERY restaurant needs reservations and not only the "french restaurant" as it states. Our first night there we had to eat at the buffet because that was the ony place we could go. The next day we had to go at 11am to reserve for the next 3 days but the guy could only do 2 reservations at one time. What? Our choice of dinner times were 6:30 or 11 pm. Only one reservation did we eat at 8pm. If you come here RESERVE from online before you come. The restaurants we tried were: Coral Sea Food, We had reservations for outside underneath the stars and the hostess told us that it was full. She asked if we could sit inside that it was the same thing. It was NOT the same thing and i told her we would wait for our "RESERVED" spot. She wanted us to make her job easier, she was the worst person we met during this trip. The salmon and lobster were delicioius but the lobster soup was awful. Next was Dolce Vita rest (italian) this is a must, our favorite one. This was an 11pm dinner but the food was absolutely delicious and presented well. The last one was the steak house. It was good too but we only chose this one because the other times and restaurants were unavailable. If you are lucky enough to be here on a tuesday you will see their best show-the Michael Jackson show. The guy is amazing. The other shows were also good but you can not compare. The disco is a good size but lotsa of people standing around. CON: Its an all inclusive you should not have to pay for good service but everything was based on if you gave a little extra. We recommend this enormous gorgeous hotel but we will not be returning because the only good rooms are premier ones. There are plenty of all inclusives that have alot, or sometimes all of the rooms have an ocean view. We did have a great time but it was our last here.

Room Tip: Choose a beach front Premier room because these rooms are the only ones that you can actually see th...

Traveled to the Barcelo Bavaro Palace Deluxe April 28 - May 4, 2013 for our honeymoon. Check in was easy and I asked about upgrading, but was told I would have to check back the next day. The resort credits are worthless unless you stay a minimum of 7 days. I checked back the next day and they wanted a significant amount of money to upgrade, which I thought was a little ridiculous. We stayed in a ground level room in building 1 closed to the adults only section. Staff never acknowledged our honeymoon, they said they would send "something special" to our room, but never did. The resort did not seem very full/busy while we were there.

Food- the food was terrible. There were lots of options, so I didn't go hungry, but the quality was severely lacking. The steakhouse was terrible, you could tell the food was leftover from the buffet as it was stale/overcooked. The seafood restaurant was probably the worst. The lobster was absolutely horrendous. I took one bite and it was chalky and mushed away like soup. The cold lobster on the salad buffet was much better, overcooked, but it was edibible.
The mexican wasn't much better and the service was awful. It took about 35 -45 minutes beween each course. By about the 3rd day, Taco Cabana was sounding like gourmet. We had the best food at the Japanese restaurant on the last night we were there. I don't like sushi so I didn't know if I would like it, but my filet mignon and shrimp were fabulous. I would have eaten there every night just to have a decent dinner.
Throughout the resort, service wasn't good. We often received our drinks (coca cola) after we had finished our meal so we finally just starting getting our drinks ourselves before we would sit down to eat. We saw lots of people not tipping and we tipped fairly well so not sure where the disconnect is. The servers/waitresses were not very pleasant either. Some of them mocked us because we didn't speak Spanish and no one ever had a smile on their face. It seemed like we were more of a bother to them and we definitely aren't the "needy" type.
The large buffets aren't open 24 hours, only the "sports bar" that has a tiny selection of food available. I think a resort of this size needs to have the large buffet open 24 hours. We went to the sports bar on several occasions when the buffet was closed and it was very crowded with almost no free tables, but again, it's very small. Just if you planning on staying here, you will find something to eat, just know that it isn't quality food. I wasn't expecting fine dining or anything, but it was definitely much lower quality than I expected. I was seriously craving just a normal turkey sandwich by the end of the trip.

Entertainment- The shows at the theater were great each night, but again service was very slow. I had a couple alcoholic drinks here that were good. They do have activities planned throughout the day, but we didn't participate. We did use the snorkel gear and snorked right off the beach and within 5 minutes found a gigantic starfish. There is something for everyone to do here.

Beach- Wonderfully fantastic beach. Water was very calm and warm, beach was clean and it was just amazing. Be prepared for the men in speedos and topless women. We saw plenty we probably never want to see again. Definitely lots of chuckles we shared while lounging.
We stayed in buidling 1 near the adults only section so the beach was quiet and plenty of open chairs. Usually only a handful of other people were around. However, there is no beach service. I went to an AI in Mexico and servers would serve you drinks on the beach. This is not the case here. If you want a drink, bring one with you, or walk back to the main area and get one.

Pool- various pools are expansive, but we never got in the pool. We came for the beach.

Hotel grounds- very large and always saw workers cleaning, trimming trees, etc. Very pretty resort with lots of marble/tile work. Be prepared for lots of walking.

Ambience- Was nice for couples, we stayed away from the "childrens" area and weren't bothered by any kids/noise.

Housekeeper- Was wonderful, and yes, they clean the jacuzzi's everyday.

Room- king bed with a couch and a desk. Do be aware that people can see into your room if you don't have the blackout drapes closed (not just the curtains). We saw many people naked, half naked, etc that probably didn't know they could be seen. The jacuzzis do have a privacy screen that can be lowered, but you can still be seen on your balcony.

Shopping- the stores onsite are expensive, think twice to triple of what you would pay for something in the US.

Wifi- paid $45 for wifi in room for 5 days; never had an issue connecting.

This resort is huge so make sure you are able to walk. They do offer a shuttle, but we never used it so I can't comment on that. Overall, I think this resort needs to improve the quality of food and maybe coach their employees on how to be polite. Even though we didn't go hungry, we were starving for some good food. It was almost laughable how much advertising the hotel had on the quality of their food. If that's the case, don't reuse the leftover food from the buffet at dinnertime. It's completely obvious when the food is rock hard from being out for 8 hours already.

It would have been nice to "feel" like we were being pampered or appreciated here since we were here on our honeymoon, but it felt like we were just another dollar to be made here. Looking back now, we probably shouldn't have tipped as well as we did, but I figured these people probably don't make a whole lot of money. We will definitely come back to Punta Cana, but not to this resort.

Room Tip: We had a room in building 1, closest to the adults only section. It was less crowded, much quieter...

My family and I went to Hotel Barcelo Palace Delux the last week in April, and everything from the weather to the room, hotel, and service was phenomenal. When scheduled our trip through a travel agent, and when we arrived we were given 2 room assignments between the 5 of us that were decently distant from the other. We were originally told by our agent that we would have connecting rooms for myself, my mom, dad, brother and 5 year old niece. Traveling with a child, the connecting rooms were very important. After trying to break through the language barrier, we talked to Edgar Valette who worked at the resort, and who was more than accommodating, and he found us a junior suite that was perfect for our needs and in the building we wanted.

Other than that, the food was to die for and the selection impeccable. From 2 buffet rooms, to multiple dining restaurants, there is something for everyone. Additionally, the hotel amenities were kid friendly, but not kid focused--a nice treat for our family with 4 adults and only one child. My niece loved every moment and the adults were able to enjoy it as well. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone--families, couples and groups of friends alike. I can't wait to go back.

Room Tip: Building 4 was located conveniently between all hotel attractions and close enough to access the lob...
