“Family spring break vacation”

This was our first trip outside USA with children, my wife and I have been to a number of Caribbean islands and resorts. This was a fantastic place for a family vacation. The room was clean but alittle small for a family of 4, but our kids being 6 and 9 are very active and the room was for showing and sleeping. The resort was way to nice to be trapped in a room all day. The food and service was great. Always plenty to eat, everything fresh, everything tempature controlled properly. My kids actually looked forward to seeing what was the specialty at night. Amazing deserts, the resort employees were always ready to help with what ever was needed. Truly a wonderful resort, our kids asked if we could skip our summer vacation destination (Disney world) to come back to the Iberastar

Iberostar Bavaro needs some serious updates and a training in customer service. We chose Iberostar, because we stayed at the Iberostar Grand Rose Hall in Jamaica for our honeymoon and it was the most amazing vacation we had ever experienced. Truth be told, I knew this resort was a step lower than the Grand Rose Hall, but I had expectations of cleanliness and good service going into this stay because of our experience in Jamaica. Sadly, this didn't even come close to meeting my expectations. Here are my take-aways:

1. The beaches and weather in the Dominican are beautiful! If only the rooms had an ocean view.
2. The food is decent. The buffets are average buffet-style food, with some chefs on hand making omelets, pasta, etc. Fridays they have all-you-can-eat lobster tail at the lobby buffet, which was amazing. The small room service menu is available 24 hours a day, but you can't get drinks or any special requests from room service. (Example: Beer, chips & cheese = No!)
3. The rooms are quiet.
4. The shows are fun, include great drink service, and a nice cultural experience.
5. The staff is nice, but most of them cannot speak English, so be sure to brush up on your Spanish for simple requests.
6. The bar staff at the resort is fantastic! Friendly, quick service, strong drinks and very accommodating.
7. Location is nice, as you can walk to the pool, restaurants, casino, bars, and disco (club) in a matter of minutes. Side note: Ladies, leave the heels at home. There is a lot of walking and the paths are an uneven stamped concrete that is really tough to walk on in heels.

1. You can't drink the water, which would be fine if you could easily get some bottled water. We rarely got water when we called for it and when they did bring it, they would bring 2 bottles and the staff would come in an wait for a tip. Let's just say we spent A LOT of tip money on bottled water.
2. If you are lucky, the mini bar will be restocked every OTHER day with a few waters and 2 beers. For the all-inclusive price I would expect to get a few more drinks in the room.
3. There is a substantial issue with drainage and all of the restrooms smell foul. You will often find the "public" restrooms plugged because they barely flush.
4. Our room smelled extremely musty, as many other reviewers experienced. It was so strong, that EVERYTHING in our bags had to be washed and our luggage had to be aired out when we got home.
5. Our room, especially the bathroom, was full of little bugs. They were VERY little, but still gross. However, the couple that we were with stayed on the floor above us and they had no bugs or smell. So, maybe the ticket is to request the 2nd floor?!
6. The safe in our room constantly quit working and the maintenance men had to come unlock it and even replace it once.
7. It costs $10 (cash) per person to enter the country. Be sure to have it ready upon arrival to the Dominican Republic.

I would return to Iberostar in Jamaica in a heartbeat, but we will not be returning to Iberostar Bavaro. Overall, I'd say that if you are looking for a moderately-priced resort strictly to lay on the beach / by the pool and consume delicious drinks... this resort is for you. If you are looking for cleanliness and amazing service, choose another resort.

I feel this property is a 4+-the room was clean .the service was top notch,and most of all the food was better than most places that I have been to.the beach was clean & the water was clear.
The rest is up to you on what else you want to do!!

Room service 3/4/14 breakfast : (first day)
Poached egg on waffle waffle soggy egg hard ,
Cereal no spoons no milk,
No spoon to stir drinks ( tea coffee),
Book a meal 4 days ahead ,
It looks 5 star but no ,
You have to tip a lot,
Food good,
Staff nice
Place very nice

Iberostar Bavaro is a very nice resort but needs a little refinement to be truly awesome. Service is hit or miss depending on the situation.

Take for example our room had an issue with "drainage". This caused our bathroom to have a foul odor. We called the front desk and they immediately dispatched a plumber to fix the problem. I got a call a few hours later from management to see if it was resolved. I wasn't sure because I was not in the room at the time. So a Rafael stopped by to check personally to be sure everything was fixed. The next couple of days Rafael would see me and stop to make sure my room was still up to par. We even got an apology letter with flowers for the inconvenience.

An example of poor service was at the buffet restaurants. More than once during lunch and dinner you can ask your waiter for drinks. I would say you have a 50% chance of them remembering your drink request.

If you decide to visit this resort make sure you bring a lot of singles and 5 dollar bills. Seems like the minute I landed I started tipping everyone.

Even though it is all inclusive tipping your waiter or waitress seems to get you better service

Do not have high expectations on the food. The best food was the French restaurant.

There is a casino next door but it is super small and out dated.

If you play blackjack and you get 21 the extra winning must remaining on the table for the next hand. So if you bet $5 dollars you get 21 you will two 5 dollar chips. You must leave the extra 5 dollar chip on the table. Odd rule if you ask me.

The beach is beautiful but don't run in. There are some rocks out there. It can be painful if you step on one.

Your room may feel warm in the afternoon but I think it is on some type of timer. At night while sleeping the room gets colder.

Overall we had a great time at this resort and very little to nothing to complain about. I definitely recommend this resort. The price is right and everyone staying there was extremely friendly.

Room Tip: Get the second floor room so you are not awaken by people moving a chair or table.

I researched all-inclusives pretty thoroughly prior to booking and this location seemed like good value from other reviews. We booked through JetBlue vacations and got roundtrip airport transfers included.

Bavaro is attached to 2 other iberostar resorts- so, lots of shared amenities.

Lots of variety in the food selection. There is one main buffet, and another by the pool/beach if you never want to stray too far. That being said, the food quality was ok. Our favorite A La Carte restaurant was the Japanese cuisine. Not much true sushi, and they were out of crab (for California rolls), but the food tasted the best here. There is always food available at the buffet by the pool in case you get hungry; fruit, pizza, breads, desserts, cheeses, deli meats.
The grounds are very well-kept. Walkways are clean and the lawns mowed/manicured.
Staff are incredibly friendly, always say hello and ask if you need anything. They are particularly attentive at the food service areas, offering drinks, etc. Front desk staff are really nice as well- it was our anniversary and they sent us over a bottle of Rum and a plate of fruit when we arrived in the room.
The pool is very large, has a swim up bar, a shallow area for kids and a substantial deep end. There is a whirlpool in the center (but no hot tub). Lots of pool activities like water aerobics, pool volleyball, scuba lessons, etc.
The beach is enormous!! Lots of seating available and the majority of chairs have umbrellas.
There is a little shop in the lobby area for basic needs (snacks, sunscreen, Tylenol, etc). At the middle hotel (iberostar Dominicana) there are a few other shops (my husband really liked the cigar shop).
Our vacation was incredibly relaxing which is what we really needed... Below are some of the things that annoyed me...

While the buffet has a large variety of food, you will learn quickly what you like or don't like and the choices get old. Same things are offered for the most part on a daily basis. But, I think this is normal for an all- inclusive. I do not recommend the French A La Carte restaurant- the food was very heavy and the meat was way undercooked for what we requested. (They were very nice when I requested for it to be cooked a bit more, and obliged.)
The pool and beach.... If you wake up at a normal hour (7am), and go to breakfast (8 am), don't expect to find a decent seat on the beach or any seat at the pool. People wake up before dawn to reserve their seats. It is ridiculous. I overheard a woman saying that her friend got up at 5:30am to get their seats!! So, if you want a seat, wake up before you really want to, reserve by placing your towel in a chair and maybe a cheap paperback book, and then go back to bed.
Housekeeping.... After we checked in, and the front desk guy told us the room was ready, we headed to the room. Upon arriving at the room, housekeeping was still cleaning, so we waited on the balcony till they finished. A little awkward. Also, we stayed for 6 days. On the first day, we had supplies fully stocked in our bathroom (bath gel, soap, shampoo, etc). By the third day, we had used 1/2 the shower gel in the shower dispenser and both small bottles that were on the counter. None were ever refilled or restocked. We called on the afternoon of our 5th day when we had run out completely (they already had cleaned our room, and we had come back from the pool wanting to shower before dinner). So we waited and waited and waited (an hour) until someone from housekeeping arrived. Guess what they brought? Two bars of soap.

If you go thru JetBlue vacations, don't feel obligated to use the representative for JetBlue to go on excursions. There are a lot of tour vendors at the hotel on a daily basis. You have the freedom to choose.

Not sure I would stay here again- but, may try another Iberostar in another country.

This was by far one of the best all inclusive resorts that we have stayed at. Every employee was friendly, extremely accommodating, and competent. When we arrived and requested a Room change for 2 rooms because we preferred a location closer to the beach and pool they accommodated with a smile and no problem (they had to locate 2 rooms next to each other because we were traveling with our 12 and 14 year old sons). Our rooms were not musty smelling like others had mentioned in their review although we had non-smoking rooms and I think this could make the difference. The housecleaning staff was so efficient and friendly as we always had clean towels morning and nights and a clean room, our fridge was restocked daily and we needed additional waters because of the possibility of dehydration and they gave us extra waters! The beach was absolutely beautiful and well kept as we never saw seaweed as they were out early raking. It is best if you get your clean beach towels the night before and use them to reserve chairs early in the morning so that you can get your desired location 7 am is early enough though some start at 6. The food was great and we never had to wait in a line, we enjoyed heading to the Dining room in the morning and evenings to be greeted by Hanoy and Reisa as they became our friends during our stay. We sat in their section each time and they were friendly, accommodating, caring and made it just a great experience each time. They remembered that we needed straws for our waters and little things like how we took our coffee. When our son was sick, they inquired about his absence and helped us to pack a meal for him from the buffet as he didn't think he could swallow any of the Room service food. Really great service!!!!! Our family is Gluten free and there was never an issue with accommodating that and they had bread/muffins glutin free at the buffet each day/although we are not as effected by cross contamination. They provided us with a card that explained Gluten free in Spanish in the case that we had a language barrier at any of the restaurants. Alexandra the head of all the restaurants was always available to answer any questions if needed. Which leads us to the superb medical clinic on site at the Iberostar that we were so grateful for within 3 minutes of contacting the front desk they sent a golf cart to pick us up and bring us to the clinic as well as return us to our room via a cart. The doctor and nurse spoke multiple languages and as it turned out our son had severe strep throat and they provided us with medicine and paperwork for us to bring back to our insurance company in the states. The doctor and nurse were caring and competent. There was always someone available to help and if they didn't know something they found someone who did. We enjoyed the shows and entertainment and my boys especially enjoyed the shooting and archery. There were Lifeguards at the pool and we felt safe at this resort. We witnessed an incident where a mom had lost her 8 year old son and the lifeguards in the pool area immediately began to radio multiple employees throughout the property while he was compassionate and talking calmly to the mom to help alleviate her fears. the boy was found and when the mom broke down in tears the male lifeguard was very sweet and tapped her back to help calm her. We don't have a single complaint and that is rare for us. Brush your teeth with bottled water do not swallow tap water from the sinks. Only book your excursions through someone at the Hotel we used AMSTAR through cheapcarribeans.com and our Rep was a wealth of information. If you want to tip dollars for great service than you should do it but we never got the feeling that it was expected or required in order to get service as we had experienced at other all inclusives.
