“Great place to stay with the whole family.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

Excellent staff and services. Hector Mora was great. He got us what we needed when we needed it and made everything comfortable. The resturants have great food and made everything we needed. this was very important because my nefew has many food allergies so they made sure he was not subjected to anything that would hurt him.

Hotel was nice enough, but there is a definite lack in customer service. Hard to get attention from servers in restaurants, no poolside service (must go to bar on your own...not what expected for the price!), and problem with our room was not resolved - and they didn't seem to care at all about it. The only people who WILL talk to you have agenda and are trying to sell you something (club membership, excursion). We'd go back to the area, but wouldn't go back to the hotel.

the property stank of petrol due to all the gasoline/diesel powered golf carts and vehicles zooming about everywhere. the beds were very comfortable. you will be accosted by "concierges" everywhere you turn asking you to sit down with them for a 90 min sales pitch for something you probably don't want anyways. there were never enough pool chairs or beach chairs. the restaurants were generally good, but the french & thai stood out as very good. sleep was good except when there was a drunk guy mistakenly pounding on our door trying to get in.

I loved the time we spent here! The staff was amazing! We had one issue with our room and we notified the staff and we were moved to a new room before the end of the day with new mini bar stuff closer to the beach. The only complaint was the difficulty to make reservations for dinner- if you did not call the day before or early in the morning- you were stuck at a buffet for the evening. Getting around the resort was a breeze- the trolley ran like clock work and when in a rush it was no trouble flagging down a golf cart. The only thing i wish i would have thought to bring is plenty of $1.00 bills for tipping. NO ONE HAS CHANGE OR WILL BREAK LARGE BILLS WILLINGLY but I guess that makes sense- they want people to leave the change or break large bills.

Our family of 5 (kids 14, 12, 10 yo) enjoyed 10 days over New Years. The kids were very active the entire time with Football (Soccer), Volleyball and other beach activities. The restaurants were above average and the people were very friendly. I would like to compliment the following employees: Enrique Minaya at the American Grill excellent service, Andres Rivera and Dagobelto Henirio at the Agora Bar and Zuleima Balbuena at the Agora Restaurant. The grounds were beautiful and we enjoyed walking everywhere. One key area of improvement would be the beach chairs (over half are broken or in desperate need of replacement. One has to go with the mentality that you are at the beach and it is an all-inclusive so do not have the highest expectations.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 12, 2014

We stayed at the Melia Caribe the first week of January 2014. It was our second trip to DR, about our 15th to a Caribbean all-inclusive. We traveled with my brother and sister-in-laws who were back for their fifth time, for 2 weeks. While this resort was not quite as fancy as say the Riu Palace Aruba, we enjoyed our holiday much more here.
The grounds of the resort are stunning, a wide variety of vegetation, flamingos, peacocks, ducks, geese in the many ponds and lakes. The grounds were very well tended. The grounds are very extensive so it is a fairly long hike from the buildings around the lobbies to the beach or vice-versa if you stay in a building near the beach, it is a long way to restaurants for dinner, but there are 2 trains and many many golf carts (4-6 passengers) roaming around that will pick you up. The walks however are not really all that long and it is so beautiful there...
Our room was clean and well kept, bed was incredibly comfortable (unlike the Riu's concrete-like slabs). We were in a building close to the lobbies and restaurants which we prefer, so we would go down to the beach every day but then had a short walk after showering to go out for dinner and the evening.
The pool areas are mainly right at the beach, the paved walkways around the pools separated from the sandy beach with a very low 18" wall to keep the sand from encroaching. Many many palm trees around the pools and along the beach which together with a large number of palapas offered lots of shade for those that wanted it. The beach itself is superb. Just to the south of the hotel beach area is a public beach with a series of shacks selling all manner of touristy stuff like t-shirts, souvenirs, massages, etc. The vendors do not however, come onto the hotel beach. So if you want to check out their stuff, ok, but if you don't want to you won't be bothered at all by any beach vendors.
There are plenty of restaurants including 9 or 10 specialty a la carte. Two are an extra charge, the Japanese and the steak/lobster (which we had and it was fantastic.) All of the restaurants we ate in were very good. We did not eat any dinners in the buffet restaurants but did have breakfasts and lunches there. They were quite good, but like almost all buffets, not great. There are bars all over the place. I couldn't count the number likely 10-12. Drinks were fine but the lack of good quality orange juice was noticeable and fairly typical for Dominican Republic. The liquour was also mostly domestic although the "Extra Añejo" rum was very good. The Mamajuana here is also very good.
We found the staff to be very accommodating and were always asking us how we were enjoying ourselves and our food etc. The assistant manager, Carlos, went out of his way to ensure we were enjoying ourselves, of course it helped that my brother-in-law was here for his fifth time.
The many lobbies areas are very nicely kept, the lobby washrooms are amazing - huge, elegant and spotless. I thinking they are feeling the competition from so many other hotels in this region and making sure they are as good as they can be.
Personally I think they are doing a great job and we will definitely be going back although next time it will be for two weeks

Room Tip: We preferred our room close to the lobbies and restaurants (buildings 20-24). If you'd rather be...

We stayed in the Adults Only level from Jan. 3-10 and I think this contributed greatly to our enjoyment during our week. The extensive property is gorgeous, with mature, lush foliage and plants similar to what you would find on the Hawaiian rainforest island of Kauai - there are many ponds and lagoons with peacocks and pink flamingos wandering around and its a lovely and serene backdrop that is very landscaped but natural.

I consider myself a bit of a foodie and wasn't disappointed with the offerings at the Melia Caribe Tropical. While there were no gourmet offerings, the prepared foods/sauces were satisfactory and what tipped the scale towards the positive was the quality and freshness of the protein offerings which you select from a raw bar and then are grilled by chefs while you wait - they know what they're doing and don't overcook either - Pablo was particularly a master griller! The buffet offered a small great, daily variety of meat and poultry including beef (tenderloin, ribs and ribeyes), lamb (loins and chops), pork and chicken, duck and rabbit. Seafood included salmon, grouper, cod, shrimp, squid and octopus.

Otherwise, there always seemed to be some ready cooked items with chicken, pork and fish but i always opted for fresh grilled.

Sides included daily servings of beans (they really do a good job with beans) rice, potatoes, plantains and cooked veggies. There would be a few soups offered daily along with fruits, cold cuts and cheeses, salad bar, bread station and dessert stations.

I thought there could be improvement in the salad bar area - many of the mixed salads had creamy dressings, or were mixed with cold meats - very rarely were there fresh lettuces or fresh veggie combinations.

There is also an a la carte section that diners can elect to eat dinner at - offerings include Italian or a Peruvian/Asian fusion menu. The latter was definitely better than the former.

Rooms were okay - the beds are very comfortable and the linens are very fresh. This is particularly important to me as I have a dust mite allergy but had no problems here. I wish they had a magnifying close up mirror in the bathroom - better hotels usually have this feature and I'm at the age where my eyesight needs help with close up work! Wifi in your room can be a very frustrating and intermittent occurence.

My most fun experience was the noon workout at the pool with Yan Luis. The guy is a total extrovert/exhibitionist and really puts it on for the crowd - even if you don't do the workout, you have to laugh. I didn't discover him until halfway through my week and was sorry i never got a chance to try out whatever activity he leads on the beach at 4pm. I hope he's still there when I go back next year!!

I found my massage experience to be a minor disappointment. Some resort spas have very well-trained masseuses (who find and work out tension points) while others have people who seem more bent on offering a relaxing experience (caressing your back more than actually working out any knots) and this was the experience here.

The beach is fantastic and I can understand why its rated highly by UNESCO. If you go, you'll be conflicted whether to spend time at the beach,( taking in the beauty of the Carribbean sea and all the beautiful colors from the parachutes/kites/balloons and the pirate ships, yachts and motor boats plying the area) or going to the pool. The pool is huge, but divided into so many private sections through richly landscaped isles that every turn yields little areas that have a different feel - you can sit in quiet areas with a view of the ocean, or the fun and loud area near the bar and everything in between.

We tried the International buffet on the Tropical Side (or is it the Caribe side?) one night as we had a craving for pasta. It has very different offerings from the Level buffet. The food was good, but I can understand why someone would be bored of it after a few days.

Most people I chatted with staying in this area complained about the food as well as the difficulty in finding room at the pool or beach and I would have to say these two factors alone made the upgrade to the Levels worthwhile for us.

We usually vacation in Hawaii or Cabo San Lucas during a winter vacation from Vancouver but I would definitely come here again over Cabo. The grounds are nicer and the fact that you can go in the water is a definite plus!! In other areas of Mexico, there are usually many aggressive vendors and panhandlers as well but none of this was apparent here.
