4 of 5 stars Reviewed August 19, 2013

My husband and I had a great time in Punta Cana at the Melia Caribe Tropical, our only complaint is how large the resort is. It took 10-15 minutes for us to walk from our room to the pool/beach. There was a lot of restaurants to choose from which was nice, BUT make a reservation RIGHT away in the morning or days in advance, otherwise you're stuck with the 9:45-10:00 PM slot which is pretty late for dinner! We loved the Avenue Bar #1! we had Gregorio Decena (Greg) as our bartender each night and he was absolutely awesome, he made every night a party and our drinks were the best. He made fancy chocolate cocktails for me and those strong drinks for my husband - couldn't have asked for a better bartender. Overall, we had a lovely time.

Room Tip: Get the royal service - we didn't and we wish we would have.

We just got back from Punta Cana and my wife and I both felt the same that this vacation was an overall 5.5 maybe 6 out of 10. Starting with the transport from the airport, we were drugged by a laugage man to our transport representative and from him to 3 different drivers when finally we were on the bus the driver went to look for more passengers and left us waiting in the heat with the kids. When we checked in to the hotel we met with a guy that was nice but later on we found out that he was trying to sale us a vacation/ time share, I was pissed. The cleaning of the room was a complete failure, our cleaning lady got into to our room without knocking around 5 a clock on day 2 to ask if we want service, we asked to come back around 6pm while we are going to be at dinner and when we got back around 11pm nothing has been done... Poor service.
You can still find some good things there like the restaurants not the buffet (very simple).

we gave it a try this year but I guess nothing can top Disney cruises as a all inclusive vacation.

I'll start with the positives. The rooms are beautiful. We decided to get a larger room. A 1 bedroom suite but not pay for the VIP service saved 800$. It was great having a divided space as we were traveling with our infant. The rooms are clean, spacious, and the housekeeping staff does a great job. However there are only stairs if you have mobility issues ask for a first floor.

The beach is beautiful! Never had an issue finding shade or chairs. The pool is huge with plenty of seating. We preferred the beach. The water is so warm you could fall asleep in it! They do however have some loud speaker playing music most of the day that I would vote to shut off.

I don't think its unique to this resort but every time you speak to someone they will try to sell you a timeshare, upgraded service, or an excursion. Just be prepared and have a budget in mind. They will mention their families and tell you about their children which can be persuasive.

Now for why I would not go back and wish I would have stayed somewhere else. The check in was extremely slow and were offered the VIP service for an extra 1500$$. The only advantage I see for the VIP service is the golf carts that will carry you around the massive resort. Other than that there is a private pool which is close to the rooms but far from the beach or the food. You still get the same drinks and same food. Glad I saved my money.

The resort is massive. I cannot begin to describe how large and spread out it is. If you have rooms close to the lobby and the food you are a 12-15 minute walk from pool and beach. If you have small children, disabled, or older it is extremely difficult to get around. If you are at the beach and forget something its a 30min round trip to get it and return. There is a train that will carry you around but you have to wait 15 minutes for it. The golf carts are only there if you pay for the VIP service.

We had a large issue with service. They say there are 14 restaurants however one beach one is closed, the thai and international restaurant were closed. The Japanese and Steak and Lobster are 40$ a person extra. So its not the 14 restaurants they promise. The other restaurants other than the buffet require a reservation that cannot be made more than one day ahead and even then you cannot get reservations to certain restaurants. We had a problem on 3 different nights after we were told we had a reservations and then found out we did not. The scheduler on the phone were very rude about it. I must say the concierge worked very hard to fix it and was very friendly. The food is below average and really the same items with different sauces and the different restaurants.

The Dominican Republic itself is incredible and beautiful and I would highly recommend. Overall I think this resort is dated and promises way more than it delivers. For the money I would try somewhere else.

Room Tip: Decide whats important to you. If its the food stay close to the restaurants if its the pool or beac...

Just returned from a weeks stay at Melia with my family (husband, 2 children ages 27 , 22 and their significant others). We had the best vacation ever. We feel we had great service and all of the employees we dealt with were friendly and more than accommodating. Our concierge, Luis was very helpful when we needed him. He did ask us to meet with him the day after we arrived and then escorted us to a presentation which we were told that we can leave after 10 mins if we were not interested. Well, we wound up staying and became interested and bought into the Melia family. It is a time share of sorts and we look forward to using it. Our sales rep, Jhonmy was a very nice guy who took care of any questions we had. He also helped us when we had any issues that needed to be resolved. We got upgraded to Royal Service and spent our time at the private pool and ate at the private restaurant. We also tried several restaurants on the resort. We were not too happy with Ma Maison or Caribe restaurants. The Dominican restaurant, the Marketplace and the Steak and Lobster (which is not in the all inclusive, but the 6 of us were treated there by Johnmy) were all very good. My kids tried the Mexican restaurant and the Japanese hibachi restaurant (also not inclusive) and liked them very much. At night, we had the best time at the Avenue bar ( located by the Mexican restaurant). The bartenders there, Greg, Johnny and Ben were the best at the resort. They made sure we were always taken care of. We did not have Royal Service rooms, but they were more than adequate for the time spent in them. We had 3 rooms in the 1500"s which had great access to the beach and pool. We needed transportation to the main areas of lobby and restaurants, but it wasn't a big deal. There is a buffet near the pool that we used occasionally for breakfast and lunch. All in all, people were nice, food and accommodations were decent and the grounds were well kept.

We own at the Melia and visit once or twice a year. The Melia is two different properties, Tropical and Caribe. Tropical usually houses time share/owners. The properties look exactly alike. Royal Service is adjacent to Caribe(walking distance) and is and upgrade. Next to Royal Service is Paradius Palma Real(5 Star upgrade) Connected to this property is the Reserve(also 5 star) the Melia is a beautiful garden property with great pools and a great beach. The variety restaurants offer something for everyone.. I rate the food -4 Not all restaurants are open all the time. I Would recommend the Melia, we rate the experience #-4

A girlfriend and myself just returned from a week at Melia Tropical. We were absolutely in awe of the entire resort. Our only complaint was that the TV in our room was not very good. Guess we should have complained but did not. We are not young people but found the entire resort wonderful. The service was superb, the grounds and restaurants excellent, although the food was presented beautifully, it lacked a gourmet touch. We were always able to find something to eat at every restaurant. We were especially impressed with our waiter at the Capri restaurant, Miguel Obispo. He was personable as well as efficient and did everything to make our visit an enjoyable experience. So much so that we returned to Capri for a second dinner. The buffets at breakfast lacked nothing as did the luncheon buffets at the Market and on the beach. We would recommend this resort to anyone. We met a lot of lovely people, staff and guests. Our room was close to the restaurants by choice. Unfortunately, we would have liked to try the Thai and American Grill restaurants but they were closed for renovations. The trams to the beach were always available in a timely fashion. We would not hesitate to return to this resort.

Room Tip: I think whatever a guest would like, either close to pool and beach or close to restaurants. Trams...

This is our 4th trip to Melia Caribe Tropical and had an amazing time. We were a group of 10 adults and the hotel was great. Part of our group booked through their RCI timeshare and we booked directly with Melia. The RCI group had rooms in building 15 and we originally had our rooms in building 23. The second day of our stay we asked to be moved closer to building 15 to be closer to my family and Felipe at the check in counter was wonderful. He moved us into the same building and we couldn't be happier.
Now, there isn't much out there about RCI stay with Melia so I will start there. My parents are RCI members for 20+ years and the exchange was easy. They booked 2 rooms with Melia and were placed in a building that had easy access to beach, pool and the grill that serves breakfast and lunch. They had access to golf carts throughout the entire week which made getting to dinners at the lobby a breeze and they did't have to walk it or wait for the train (the resort is very large). The per person rate is RCI week exchange fee +$57 pp per day. Which is a value since you get a couple of extra perks. The rooms were nice king beds and pull outs and always cleaned great. Members also get to book dinners for the week. There is also a Royal Service option when you book through RCI, Club Melia is RS and Sol Melia Vacation Club (what my parents booked) is not. These rooms are in the RS section and are $80 pp per day. The RCI staff Anny, Luis and Yamel were excellent and if you needed anything, they did their best to make it happen.
Now our stay was booked through Melia directly, but we had just a fabulous of a stay. We all ate at 7 different restaurants and they were wonderful. We tried the steak practically at every restaurant and were always pleased. Also their was some kind of shrimp delivery strike going on and all shrimp dishes were replaced with lobster. Yummmm. Make sure to try the Dominican restaurant. The food is delicious and the sancocho (typical soup for the island) is just as good my Dominican family makes it!
If your looking for souvenirs try the supermarket in the Palma Real shopping center first. The hotel provided golf cart transportation from the lobby or you can walk it. The supermarket has a small isle for souvenirs but the prices are excellent. Shot glasses are $1.50 and mugs are $2. They also have other items that are priced well below any other store. On the beach there is a small group of huts with many items. Negotiate and you will get good prices. They want your business so don't pay the 1st price they give you. The hotel shop or beach shop are more pricey so I would recommend trying these places out first.
There are plenty of pool chairs, they are a little harder to find after 12 noon, but you don't have to wake up at 5 am to get them. The only thing you need to get up early for are the cabana huts with beds. By the time we got to the pool at 9am they were all taken.
There are daily activities that go on at the hotel so check the schedule. One day we were able to make mamajuana and get a bottle too, which was a fun activity.
I have stayed stayed at the hotel with the standard room and even Royal Service last year. The Royal service is excellent, the rooms are a little nicer and the additional Gabi restaurant is excellent. The RS rooms are closer the lobby and has it own private pool (that doesn't have music like the other pools), but farther from the beach. They have access to golf carts and butlers depending on the room. Now our RS stay was perfect for our last vacation as a couple. This vacation as a family was excellent and we didn't do RS. So its really up the what type of vacation you want. RS is more upscale. RCI gives you some perks and Standard is a value. Either way, they all have access to the same restaurants =)
Overall our trip was wonderful and we will definitely be returning.

Room Tip: Rooms 1-6 and 15, 16 are closest to the pool and beach. If their available I would ask for them.
