Our first trip to an AI resort was to this excellent property in Punta Cana. Incredible value IMO, with superb top-shelf liquor available, very good food, quite acceptable wines to accompany. The rooms were terrific, with marble flooring, whirlpool bath and walk-in shower, personal butler (like having a personal concierge on call), and customizable minibar. All included, of course. Wifi signal we found to be strong throughout the resort, with very fast speeds for browsing, downloading files, etc. Water was fine - drank tap water and rinsed toothbrushes in it with no ill effects.
This is an adults-only, rather relaxed resort with nightly shows that are ... okay. But the performers are enthusiastic and personable, as are all the resort staff. The buffet restaurant offers a pretty good selection of American-style breakfast offerings, including bagels and cream cheese, waffles, omelettes, bacon, etc. Fruit juices tend to be pretty pulpy, so I recommend sticking with actual fresh fruit, which is plentiful. Lunchtime one can get as much ceviche, shrimp, crab, and steak as one wants, along with many other tasty fish and chicken dishes and salads. For dinner I'd recommend sticking mostly with the specialty restaurants; we especially enjoyed the surf & turf (El Galeon) and Japanese steakhouse restaurants, but the "gourmet" Le Tourbillon was also good. The lobster risotto at the Italian restaurant was excellent, but other menu items there were mediocre in our opinion. The free-flowing wines tend to be Spanish Riojas, with some good Chilean and Argentinian offerings also; most of these would be in the $10-15 per bottle retail in the US, and are high-quality examples of wines at that price point. Avoid the California wines on offer.
Very good exercise room, yoga sessions and step aerobics on the beach, and ample sidewalks and paths in the resort to allow a 4-5 mile walk if you want to stay in shape. We're not beach people or lie-in-the-sun types, but the hotel offers plenty of chaise longues and palapas both poolside and on the beach. This resort is in a sort of bay that seems to provide calmer water than is available at other resorts in the area.
Room included two rounds of golf at the adjoining Iberostate golf course, an adequate PB Dye design. Offsite trips to Punta Espada (in Cap Cana) and Casa de Campo Teeth of the Dog (in La Romana) were pricey but well worth it - two of the best golf courses I've ever played, with incredible views.
