I took two of my friends visiting from Chicago to Szentendre to see a little of Hungary outside Budapest and get some souvenirs. We ended up getting a local foodies recommendation for lunch and taking the little boat on the waterfront in Szentendre that goes to Sziget monostor (or also called Szentendrei sziget) which is a thin island in the middle of the Danube. This boat and its driver look like they came straight out of the 1970's and the short 5 minute trip luckily was priced like it did too. About 300 yards North on the road once you get to the island, there is a hotel called Rosinante that we ate at. It was the best food any of us had ever had in Hungary and maybe even Europe. It had Hungarian food but done in a much more delicate and gourmet style and we were shocked at how much of a value it was. After lunch, the hotel let us borrow bicycles and we went around the island checking out the real village life you cannot get anywhere in Szentendre. We saw storks on top of a a cute small church, local fisherman, cobblestone roads, an ice cream shop....and had the best day of all of our trips.
