“So good we went twice on our honeymoon!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 10, 2010

We spent a total of 10 nights at the Tubkaak, on our honeymoon last November. We had planned to have one week here and a week at the Phi Phi Island Resort. We were so sad to leave the Tubkaak that we came back after two days!

It is a truly unique hotel. Small but spacious, stylish but unpretentious, simple but luxurious. Set in a rainforest, it feels like a little hideaway. The staff are warm hearted & friendly without ever being intrusive. They arranged for us to have our original room when we got back and even left us a bottle of champagne to welcome us home! The rooms themselves are comfortable & classy if not opulent. Each has a fantastic outdoor bath and shower, so you can watch the stars whilst you bathe. Ask for an upstairs room. And it makes no difference having a room by the pool or not. We actually liked being away from the pool, although its no big deal either way.

The restaurant is amazing, set round a typically lily-padded carp pond and facing the sea. Good unfussy food, a stunning place for breakfast and its the best sunset bar we've ever found.

But the clincher is the private beach. I defy you to find a better sunbathing view anywhere on earth! The limestone cliffs are a stunning backdrop and we spent most of our time gazing out at them. A bonus is that the Thai government (or at least the regional government) has banned sun loungers, so you are forced (!) to use the hotel's huge leather beanbags. The only downside of which is that its impossible to stay awake after lunch!

Now, it is true that the bay is tidal and that the waters recede quite dramatically twice a day. Personally we didn't think it detracted from the beauty or experience
of the place one tiny bit though.

We can't wait to go back. We've persuaded three sets of friends/couples to go there already, (one of whom works as a tour PA for a famous band, and so has seen more than a few five star hotels). They've all loved it! Not as much as we did though.

I agree with a previous reviewers quote “we expected so much more having read the reviews but were somehow left with an unfulfilled feeling”.

The hotel is set on a lovely beach with great views of the islands and some of the most amazing sunsets we’ve ever seen. The ‘jungle’ grounds of the hotel are well kept and make this boutique hotel quite unique.

BUT it is very isolated; there are no shops or local bars/restaurants in walking distance due to the hotels hilly location. You can use the hotels complimentary shuttle service into Ao Nang, but it’s limited to a couple of hours in the evening on a Mon/Wed/Fri.

We too felt the rooms were on the small side, as were the balconies, but they were well maintained and very clean.

The food & service in the restaurant was excellent with great menu choices in the evening, but breakfast was quite uninspiring after a few days. The hotel shop is not cheap for drinks & snacks and has quite a poor selection. A poolside service was practically non-existent and when the pool is at the top of the complex and the restaurant on the beach, we would have expected better service, given the attentiveness of the staff in the restaurant at dinner/breakfast.

We did enjoy our stay, but would we go back? I’m not so sure. We stayed at other hotels during our trip to Thailand that did exceed the rave reviews given on here and we would be inclined to revisit one of those instead!!

Worth remembering that this place is not a Kate Moss standard exclusive resort, rather a small boutique style resort. To that end it's fantastic as you avoid the usual big strip resort riff raff (only half kidding). It's a lovely spot and has fabulous limestone views. We couldn't fault the staff. For the size of the place they were very impressive. The little things were irritating. Poor english. DVD player not working. Didn't research the integrity of the boat trip drivers (lazy and pretended to speak no English ((that old chesttnut)).

The thing that would stop us returning was the above average food. If Thai food can be accomplished in Edinburgh it should be terrific in Thailand. It really wasn't and very over priced.

That said, i'd go back as it simply had a warm feel to the place which can be difficult to find no matter how much money you pay.

The view is great. The rooms are unique, The service is the finest I have ever received in a resort. The manager Petcharat took a personal interest in everyone and refered to us all by name. A paradise in paradise.

Have just returned from a 4 day break at the Tubkaak resort and whilst I would love to keep this place a secret for myself, it would be extremely selfish of me to do so! You cannot fault this place, the staff are not only lovely but the service is probably the best that I have ever encountered, the food is delicious as are the coctails of which we tried a good many (!), the views absolutely beautiful and the rooms afforded us both the best sleep we'd had in a long long while. The outdoor shower and bath carved from stone are a definite plus as are the free kayak and DVD rental. The perfect place for a relaxing time away and just 20mins from the livelier though by no means as beautiful nor charming Ao Nang area.

The Tubkaak exceeded all our expectations from its beautiful property to the most attentive service. We just can't say enough about what a great find this was for us. We rarely left the property as we were in awe with its beauty, great food, and the best staff ever.

We were initially considering the Amari which is very close by. We took a short walk on the beach to check out the Amari. We are so glad we ended up choosing the Tubkaak which has a more natural appearance and blends in so nicely with the local landscape.

This is by far our favorite hotel ever and we are already thinking about a possible return!
