“Such a shame - we love the pub but.........”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 19, 2014

Such a lovely location and pub, always had great food, beer, atmosphere........ that was last year. Have been twice in 2014 and still love the beer, the location and the food, BUT, the portion size have shrunk - significantly. We took our elderly parents for a family lunch today and, despite booking a table, we had to wait over an hour for our food. It tasted superb but just not enough - portions too small. I'm hungry now and got to go and get some supper. Staff are lovely and the beer is great. If they change the size of dishes they serve food in........ I'll willingly come back.

“very disappointing, terrible service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 18, 2014

We booked our table in advance and warned that one of our group has a gluten free diet. They said there was a lot of choice for gluten free and that the chef can accomodate and they will give them advance warning. We arrived and there were only a couple of options for them - not as accomodating as we were told.

We had to wait an hour for our starters and an hour and a half for our mains. When they brought the mains there was one missing as our order had been taken down wrong by the bar staff. We had to wait a further 15 minutes for the extra meal. The pub wasnt that busy and we had no warning of a wait for food.

We were made to feel that these mistakes were our fault and we barely had an apology from the staff.

Overall the food was okay, but not worth the prices. probably wont go back.

“Such a shame but over priced and below average food.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed April 8, 2014 via mobile

This was our first and last time we will be visiting The Royal Oak. We went on a Sunday. My wife and her friend had the roast beef which was really tough and fatty. I had, what they seem to be happy to pass off as a ploughmans lunch. I payed over £12 for cheap sliced bread, a tinny amount of cheese/ham and a small undressed leaf salad. No butter no pickles no coleslaw, no apple etc.
Avoid, unless you like paying top end prices for bog standard food.

“Disappointing on so many levels”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed April 7, 2014

We were a party of 6 celebrating a birthday. The service was very poor/slow and the menu was expensive pub grub and not all available. On arriving we waited at least 20 minutes to be attended and then waited for our orders almost an hour even though there were very few other tables occupied. On arrival the 4 chilli dishes were all missing an ingredient that only one had specifically excluded and was scorchingly (ie microwave) hot and the portion size for five of the dishes were laughably small (avg. price £13.25). We challenged the very embarrassed waitress who offered us a complimentary coffee - we accepted but advised that we were only prepared to pay half price for the small mains as we were all still hungry and would now be ordering dessert...another long wait.

When the desserts arrived the "orchard crumble" contained cocktail cherries and was discarded and the 3 "burnt cream with homemade shortbread" had a packet biscuit sprinkled with icing sugar (a lotus biscoff that accompanies coffee) when we raised this further dissatisfaction with the waitress she went off never to return. In fairness, the 2 sticky toffee puds were generous and tasty. The bill arrived without adjustment. The manager had conveniently disappeared to collect her children from school so we insisted and duly agreed on a reduced bill with, we believe, the Chef - no explanation or remorse!

A longheld good reputation destroyed by a single experience.

“Good food but slow service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 5, 2014

This is our third time at the Royal Oak but the first time for an evening meal having only been there on Sunday lunchtime when it is heaving. It's a busy place and I would recommend that you book before turning up if you plan to eat. We were here for a birthday of one of our party and booked for 6pm for 4 people. The food is mostly British and is well done; bangers and mash, steak, fish and some vegetarian dishes. The disapointment for us was that several of the dishes on the menu were "off" - this is at the start of the evening - and the service was very slow with a wait of over 30 minutes between starters and mains; these things have never been an issue before so I hope they get them sorted soon. That said, when the food arrived it was superb. Just over £150 for 4 with three courses and some pre-meal nibbles and a total of 10 alcoholic drinks; pretty good value. Recommended.
