Group of friends (14 of us) just arrived back in US after staying at Sosua Bay Hotel 2/21-2/28. Had a wonderful time, but then we always do! After reading all the negatives recently about this hotel, I felt I needed to give a fair review. This was a very nice, moderately priced hotel on a beautiful bay. The view is spectacular. The food is wonderful. We ate at the buffets at both the Sosua Bay Hotel and the Azzurro and the 3 specialty restaurants (reserve 1st day there). Service at a la carte restaurants was excellent. Service was “spotty” at buffets, but my group had no problem with this. We just got up and got coffee, water, etc. ourselves because it was always out and available. Snack bar at lowest level by water was a great place to watch the sunset. Great hamburgers! Warning! Do not go into Sosua at night.
The entertainment at night was very good. There are no activities at this hotel during the day, but plenty over at the Azzurro. Do not go to this hotel if you are a “beach” person. There is virtually no beach except for the public beach next door, and this was not an especially good beach, plus the fact that vendors charge $2/day for a chair. We never did this. We took the shuttle over to the Azzurro every day at 10:00 am. One of our group always put our names on the list about 7:30, and we never had a problem getting everyone on the bus. The bus leaves Azzurro at 5:30 pm to go back to Sosua Bay Hotel. The taxi is $12 each way if you want to come later or go back early. This is a long day, but there were plenty of lounges at the beach, a nice open area library, 2 covered bars and a snack area (be sure to get a slice of pizza) next to the beach, pool with water activities, another sitting area, and massage therapist next to the buffet (wonderful!). There is also a small gift shop and a cappucino area in the lobby. Shopping in Cabarete is also better than in Sosua. Cabarete Beach is the #1 beach in the world for kiteboarding. ESPN was filming kiteboarding and windsailing championships last week. Breathtaking! Also good for long walks.
The rooms were typical of other places we have stayed in the Caribbean. We tipped the maid every day and asked for extra water – our refrigerator was always stocked with plenty. We never saw a bug except for a couple of ants by the pool on Monday. The electricity would go off for a couple of minutes at the same time every night. One night the water was out for a couple of hours. This has happened to us before at other hotels, so was not a big surprise. There are also lots of steps (and no handrails). There are several elevators, and only one was not working (for a day). At Victorian House where 2 specialty restaurants are, there is no elevator to get to restaurants and there are many steps. There are also no bathrooms in the restaurants, so you must go up and down several flights of stairs to bathroom. We were more aware of this than most since a couple of us had difficulty with stairs.
The representative from Cocotours, Hipolito, came by at breakfast each day and checked on us (except for his day off). At the briefing he offered us trips but was not pushy about it. We didn’t do any trips this time, but I would highly recommend the Beach Runner all day trip, which we’ve done on a previous visit. Others said the catamaran trip was very good. Most of the trips from this property entailed a 2-3 hour bus ride each way. This didn’t appeal to us. Also, don’t take snorkel boat offered at hotel ($15). There are no life jackets and a guy in our group almost drowned! Besides, snorkeling not good in this bay. Take one of snorkeling tours offered by representative.
As for the sickness that has been mentioned by some reviewers, three of our group did have the vomiting, diarrhea, and headaches that lasted 1 day. Some of us have been sick on trips before, but did talk with other people at hotel who had been sick 1 day with something. Eleven of our group did not get sick, so I would not say this was rampant. Do not think it was food poisoning because we were all eating the same things. I never ate any uncooked vegetables and I was one of those who got ill. I do believe this was some sort of 1-day virus.
I know this is very long, but hard to sum up a wonderful week in a short space. If you want more information, email me.
