We just returned from the lovely Victorian House at Sosua Bay. We were lucky to have perfect weather, hot and sunny every day with rain only twice and only during the nighttime. It is very humid there, but you have the option of 2 pools or the ocean to cool off in. The atmosphere was very nice and the resort was a nice size, not too big, not too small. The food was excellent, both in the buffet as well as in the restaurants. We made reservations ahead for dinners in the Italian, Tex/Mex, and Asian restaurants, and we were delighted with all of them. They are a little bit more upscale than the buffet. I was a little bit tentative to drink the water but did learn from the staff that the water is supposedly purified and not to worry. However, my stomach hasn't been right since day 3, even until now, but not too bad. The activities were limited, but I had fun snorkeling and kayaking and I got certified to be an open-water scuba diver after taking a 4-dive certification class. The bike tour using the bicycles at the resort was pathetic. The bicycles were in terrible condition, most had no brakes, rusty chains, wheels not lined up properly...the chain fell off one of the bikes as we rode around town. Most of the shows in the evening were enjoyable. I especially liked the Lion King and the Afro-Carribean show. Going into town to shop or walking along the beach gets very annoying and overwhelming because the natives constantly hound you to browse in their shop. If you do shop, make sure to barter. If you so desire, you can bring things to give them as they are very poor, which breaks my heart. The Haitian woman who braided my hair asked if I had any extra shampoo. On my last day, I gathered up the toiletries I had and brought them to her and she was extremely appreciative. Most of the resort staff were pleasant and helpful, but speak limited English. Our room in the Victorian House was very nice and quite large. We had a suite with several rooms, a balcony, a sun room, and a beautiful view. There was a large jacuzzi in the bathroom but it leaked. There were a couple times where there was no hot water. The power went out several times daily, but only for a few seconds as the resort has a generator. The lights, where there are lights, are extremely dim, to the point where you can barely see i.e. in the bathroom. There are different levels throughout the resort and you are constantly going up and down stairs that are often spiraling and sometimes slippery, with no lighting (even at night) which is very dangerous and my biggest beef with the place. Even with all of these little oddities, I really enjoyed this resort and would return. Next time I will bring a flashlight and more items to give to the natives.
