I came across Casa Veintiuno on Tripadvisor while planning a vacation the Caribbean. We were celebrating my finace's birthday, and the two of us really just wanted a relaxing respite from the NYC grind. I was intrigued by all the glowing reviews of Casa 21, and the pictures that seemed impossibly perfect. I decide to book a room for 5 nights and am incredibly glad I did.
Let me start by saying that all the great things said by reviewers on this site are absolutely true. If you are looking for a relaxing, quiet experience with outstanding food and beautiful rooms at a great value, then Casa Veintiuno is for you. However, if you are looking for a boisterous atmosphere, with lots of people, massive buffets and all-you-can drink specials, this may not be the best place.
On to the details...
The Room: Our room was immaculate, modern and comfortable. Everything is a crisp, clean white, and there was more than enough space for the two of us to be very comfortable (I believe we were also in the smallest of the 4 rooms). You could easily call this room a junior suite, as it had a day bed and dividing wall. The bed was very comfortable, with Egyptian cotton sheets, and the bathroom was bright and clean.
An HD flatscreen TV sits at the bed's base, with a number of cable channels and DVD player. There is also an iPod dock by your bedside with good sound quality. Simply put, this is a room you would like to live in, not just vacation in. It was kept very clean by the staff, and the animal shaped towels were a great touch.
The Food: We basically ate all of our meals at Casa Veintiuno. The breakfast could not have been more perfect - freshly baked bread, delicious fresh fruits (mangoes, pineapple, papayas and more), an light array of Italian meats and cheese, jellies and spreads, a daily fruit smoothie, and brewed DR coffee. And this is the standard breakfast! You can also order omelettes, yogurt, cereal and more if you wish. The dinner was also fabulous. Marc will tell you he's a "hobby chef" - I think he's being modest, and is secretly a trained culinary professional; the food is just that good. Salads from the organic farm were the tastiest in memory; steaks, chicken and fish all cooked impeccably in a variety of sauces; wonderful and attentive service throughout the meal - this is the Casa Veintiuno way. Lunch was also very good, but most days we were so full from breakfast that we barely needed to eat anything until dinner!
Related to the food, the drinks were also delicious. As stated earlier, the mojito was amazing as were the other mixed drinks we had. The Presidentes were always cold, and very affordable as well!
Pool/Beach: The pool and poolside area were extremely nice. Clean, comfortable furniture adorned the side of the pool; perfect for lounging all day. Since the hotel is so small, you never have to worry about fighting over a good poolside spot. There is more than enough room to go around at Casa 21. There are two beaches, both a very short (5 minute) walk away. One is less busy than the other, but while we were there (early June) both beaches were very quiet. The sand and water were clean, there were beach chairs available for rent, and plenty of small local shops to visit.
Excursions: We took a catamaran snorkeling trip, and a horseback ride to a secluded waterfall. Both activities were fun, well-organized and affordable.
The Service (the best part): I think what ultimately sets this place apart is how well Marc, Saskia and their staff care for the hotel and thier guests. Everyone is so attentive and you really notice that extra level of care - the way a towel is rolled up after laying unattended poolside; the well-prepared and well-presented meals; the near perfect condition everything in the hotel seems to be in. Marc and Saskia clearly love what they do, and this really sets Casa Veintiuno apart from the rest.
All in all, I couldn't recommend this place more highly particularly if you are looking for a quiet. laid back holiday, with exceptional dining. I'm very glad I decided to visit Casa Veintiuno, and plan to return in the future.
