Just opened last month, "El Lobo y La Sal," Cocina de Mar, or in English Cuisine from the Sea, on the gorgeous Juan Dolio Beach, about 150 meters to the East of the Public beach.
This is an opportunity to try at a very reasonable price one of the upcoming best Chefs of the DR , Joel Matos. He has the passion of Saverio Stassi & the knowledge of Ciro Casola, today, two of the very best Chefs of our country.
My recommendation is to start off with a nice sparkling iced rosé; Raventos i Blanc cava rosé de Nit NV. A harmonius blend of 50% Macabeu, 25% Xarel-lo, 20% parelleda & 5% Monastrell.
Follow this with a fantastic variety of salads, where my favourite is the rice based noodles with fresh ginger & a touch of mint, offering absolute freshness.
As a main dish I have to insist on Joel's oyster sauce, mouth watering baby back ribs!
Slow cooked for over 6 hours in his special oven, the meat literally falls off the bone, however retaining all the flavour packed in there by nature.
I paired this with a D.O. Ribera del Duero Protos serie Privada con Crianza 2009 & the result was total bliss!
Obviously he has a long list of sea food plates, the house specialty, like shrimps thai-style, spiny lobsters on the grill with a butter lemon sauce on the side, red snapper fried the tempura way & my absolute seafood recommendation for the Lobo, the rock octopus on the grill with extra virgin olive oil & a touch of garlic. I paired the octopus with a D.O. Rias Baixas alvariño from Los sucesores de Benito Santos a 2011, which was an orgasmically delicious combination.
His desserts are all to die for, but my favourite is "Dulce de Leche con coco sauve" or in English milk dessert with soft coconut shavings. Simply out of this world, with a good expresso coffee & a fine premium cigar, like a Puro de Hostos Comendador Lancero.
Well there you have it; a great place that adds live music every weekend afternoon & where you can mix sea, sun, fun & great gastronomy at good value.
