“Nothing to do”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2013

I stayed here in January 2013 for 3 nights, then again in February 2013 for 5 nights. The first stay was fine. But the second stay I had a problem trying to call home, so they changed my room. Then I had trouble there too. I would have left, but it was a business trip and I wasn't paying. Also, there is nothing to do close by. Little boring. Only plus is open bar every night for two hours.

This hotel is about 20 miles east of Las Americas Airport and 1/2 mile from the nearest beach access. It is located in a golf course development that resembles an Orlando, FL neighborhood. The hotel itself is nice, if a little bit spartan. WiFi was available only in the common areas. The rooms are fine - certainly by DR standards. The workout room was lacking in equipment. The pool is nice. The free breakfast (under Embassy Suites management) was good but not great. The hotel seems to be only about 50% occupied throughout the year (4 stays there).

The property is in a gated community and thus has good security. Most of the homes around the hotel are expensive by DR standards and either looked vacant or are only used as vacation/second homes. In order to get to the beach you have to either take the hotel shuttle to a public beach access or walk to the a nearer access about 1/2 mile from the gated entrance. Walking takes you past a police precinct, down a short street and then to the main resort drag. Other than the beach, there isn't much to do at the hotel unless you bring golf clubs. They opened a small grocery store by the property entrance. But anyone staying at the hotel should have a rental car.

Embassy Suites name has been removed from the building and everywhere inside. Hotel seems to be heading downhill. Rooms are clean, but old. The breakfast is simply "OK". The gym equipment needs attention. Pool area is nice. Unless you play golf, there is NOTHING to do at resort but relax at the pool. Surrounding areas are not safe, especially at night.

We've been there in March 2012 for a wedding and really enjoyed our stay. They have a shuttle to the beach. Very good breakfast and nice staff.
Big rooms with good amenities. The beach is fine as well. Overall Juan Dolio is a nice place for a vacation. I can recommend it.

5 of 5 stars Reviewed September 13, 2012

I stayed over with my wife for several days and the service and amenities were terrific. The staff was friendly and accommodating, and the facility was clean and very quiet. Our room was facing the pool which added a very relaxing view. Breakfast was excellent and the organic/natural juices really added a touch of class to it. Just need to add more variety of cognac to the bar (Hennessy, Remy Martin, Couvassier…). However, this does not take anything away from the quality of service or the facility. The private beach with the bungalows’/bohios in the water was first class. We will come back.

The Hotel is OK if your are looking for a place to Relax and do nothing. Breakfast was very good, room is old furnitured, golf at the facility but NO beach. The surrounding areas (Juan Dolio) have several restaurants beachfront but not too secure latenight, so not good place for the whole family.

As expected, the Embassy Suites Juan Dolio turned out to be a very relaxing place to spend the night in. Heading back from La Romana towards Santo Domingo, it was certainly a worthwhile night stop with two of my kids aged 12 and 15.

The buffet breakfast spread was most welcome. The property in itself, being in a sort of posh residential compound made the stay feel like more of a home away from home.

Although the hotel is not a beachfront property, vans shuttle guests to and from an exclusive beach property that belongs to the Embassy Suites. Savour the beds on the water!

Tip: Even if you are in rush to get a room and if you have not made an advanced booking, try asking the hotel desk first before taking one that is offered by an online travel agency. It turned out that ours should have been cheaper by USD25 if I had asked the desk first.
