This is the second trip to this hotel for me and my husband. We were there in October 2011 and we liked it so much we just went again Mon. July 8-Fri. July 12 for 4 nights and 5 days. I've read a lot of negative reviews regarding the food and the rooms, but once again, we had a great experience.
Again, the grounds were beautiful, the buildings very pretty, the beach was spectacular (although a bit rocky), the hotel rooms clean and adequate, shower water was hot, and the food was delicious. We had no problems at all and we enjoyed ourselves tremendously. Staff was competent, helpful, and friendly.
I will say this about the night entertainment - although the staff really works hard, the shows are embarrasing and not very appropriate. We saw no performances. These are game shows where people from the audience participate. Some of the material is nasty and not suitable for all members of the audience. My husband and I walked out of a "show" and believe me, we are not prudes. It would be quite easy to just have performances or dance exhibitions. I don't know why they are going the tacky route. The staff is talented and they are capable of much better. Clearly a poor management decision.
This is not a hook-up resort. Lots of couples of all ages as well as families with young children and grandparents too.
The food -- We loved the buffet so much we didn't even bother with the other restaurants that were available. We ate all our meals in the buffet and we thought the food was delicious with plenty of variety. There was something to suit everyone's tastes and diet. Drinks were good too and the bartenders very knowledgeable.
Rooms were basic. Nothing fancy. Clean room, clean towels and sheets and air conditioned, with plenty of hot water. Yes, they may appear a bit dingy and could use some upgrading, but that didn't matter to us. Who goes to a beach resort and hangs out in the room? Not us.
We stayed in the 3000 building and had no problems. Friends of ours stayed in 2 rooms in the 1000 building and also had no problems. There is no more 4000 building - it had been sold.
Although we didn't use the pools, they were beautiful. I think there were 3 and people were definitely enjoying them.
I don't think that the hotel does a very good job of showcasing their amenities. They don't remind you of what is available to you, like miniature golf, scuba lessons, etc. Again, clearly a poor management decision.
It should be noted that there are vendors on the beach. They are not overly pushy or rude or aggressive, but they are a constant presence there selling jewelry, carvings, massages, etc. When you say no thank you, they move along, but there is always another one to come along. You will be saying no thanks all day long, so be prepared. It didn't bother us that much but I can see where it could be annoying to some.
To all of you who want fantasticly gorgeous rooms, haute cuisine food and deluxe state-of-the-art everything else, I would advise you to actually pay to get those things on your vacation. Don't expect 5 star amenities and services when you aren't paying 5 star prices. If those things are important to you, then pay more and stay someplace else. Don't be cheap and then complain about what you didn't get.
It was a wonderful vacation, restful and relaxing, and we plan to return next year with our family.
