“Not so great”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 5, 2013

Although the beach was beautiful, this hotel is old and in dire need of updating and some repairs. One guest found open wires in sand at the beach. Although rooms were clean, bathrooms in the pool and beach area smelled and were not kept clean -- often out of toilet paper. Only one restaurant was open because of it being "down season" and the buffet selections were strange at times (chicken wings at breakfast)? Snack every day = hot dogs, hamburgers and grilled cheese. Bartenders were not very friendly.

There is no actual process for checking in it's a cluster-F%&*, the rooms were awful, the food was so bad I lost weight! The gym is an insult to call that a gym - we worked out outside and thankfully brought our own resistance bands and jump ropes. The staff was ok at best, they were better during the week when all the locals didn't invade the resort. They close the pool at 6pm - really!! The staff runs an escort service right from the resort - seen w/ our own eyes! Save your hard earned $$ and go somewhere else! My family didn't even know that resort was still open - barely!! The AC struggled to keep the room clammy at best, the beds are ancient and the pillows (only 2 for a king bed) were lumpy stuffed, no fitted sheet just a barely there sheet, you got 2 bath towels that were 50 shades less than white, no wash cloths and a single hand towel. The fridge NEVER worked even though they exchanged it twice. They rotated the breakfast foods at lunch and the lunch foods at dinner adding very little variety at a time. The Dominican restaurant was NEVER opened and no future plans on opening. The French restaurant was by limited reservation only where you had to "dress up" and it was no different from the buffet on the included items other than someone brought the food to you, of course for anything like lobster or steak you had to pay additional. Not awesome - thankful that my family rescued me on several occasions to eat real Dominican food that wasn't going to make me sick! Next year back to Punta Cana!!!

first, I would like to comment that after hearing all the bad reviews, I was pleasantly surprised with Barceló Capella. Rooms did take a bit to get the rooms after checking in but we took the opportunity to eat, drink and explore. As usual we had a pair of swim clothes just in case and were able to change so we could start enjoying our vacation whether the rooms where ready or not, I love the Barceló brand and although this resort was not of the same quality as the others in that chain, it was still great for the money. The rooms could be night and day...we had an alright room while my sister had a huge room right next to us that was great, however we were not expecting 5 stars accommodations and did not mind the minor things since we were barely in the room. Although our bathroom did show signs of wear (broken tiles and door lock) all we were in there to shower (water pressure fine and hot water whenever we used it), etc. The A/C worked fine and bathroom towels were enough and did not have an issue with the beach towels either unlike what other had reviewed. The fridge was minimally stocked but you could find food and drinks until the disco closed so we only encountered a problem once or twice before we got smart and filled the drink containers that we brought with water and soda to be left in the fridge for when we needed. The food although not amazing was ok, we did not get sick at any point and we found stuff to eat each time that we visited the buffet. There were a lot of flies while eating and that was a bit annoying but it is to be expected and it cannot be helped. The a la carte restaurant however did not appeal to us as the choices were very limited for the all inclusive plates and the beef we had was very tough. Room service was unavailable late at night and pool area was small. The beach...it was beautiful, it was rocky at parts but if you walked further down it no longer was and that is also where you encounter less vendors and good shell picking area. We had to leave the beach area to avoid being constantly approached by the vendors but we understand that that is how they make they living however it did make it less relaxing, you literally had to play dead to be left alone. We did not encounter any unpleasant employees, everyone was very nice but maybe we didn't encounter any issues as we speak Spanish, I feel that there might have been language barrier otherwise but it still would not have come off as rudeness just lack of understanding as I saw with other visitors yet they were still able to communicate enough. We were there for the weekend and on Friday it did become busier with the locals but we found it to liven up the place although it did make it harder at the buffet but there was enough for everyone. The disco was nice even if just to listen to the music from the beach. The place was medium sized and it was easy enough to get to where you needed to pretty quickly, we were in building 3 as the newly renovated building 4 was closed down during our stay and found it to be very centralized. We traveled with a handicap person and everyone was very helpful in this regard. There is a store across the street which was very convenient for us. We did a day trip to Soana Island, that was probably the highlight of the trip. Check out was prompt even with the delay because of computer issues but we gave ourselves enough time so it was not an issue. we would return, it was worth the value we paid.

Very unpleasant employees. They speak/understand very little English. Communication was almost impossible, couldn't even order simple mixed drinks. Old outdated rooms, lots of rust, poor service. I would not return here if it was a free trip. Even the security guards were rude. They obviously did not like Americans.

I read reviews and looked through pictures that looked and sounded great before coming here. The word "beautiful" should not even be used in the same sentence as this resort. The building my husband normally stays in when he comes here has been shut down/sold and condos will be built instead. The poor upkeep of the buildings and landscaping was the first thing I noticed and upon entering the room, a smell of old, mildew, rotten must was overbearing. The AC was not working and the bathroom was disgusting. The bed skirt on the king size bed looked like it hasn't been washed in 30 years and had multiple stains on them. The "Mini Bar" included a come, water and juice box ONLY and only 2/3 of the dimly lit lamps actually worked. We switched rooms and that one was not any better, but the AC worked. Prior guests "bodily fluids" remained on the toilet seat, which was beyond repulsive. The food included is all buffet food, which we saw sat out in the 90 humidity for hours before dinner started. The resort is known to be "multilingual", but these are few and far to come by. The pools are dirty and not well kept and the lounge chairs are old, dirty and covered in bird droppings. The entertainment was subpar and the customer service was below average. Very disappointed in this so-called "all inclusive resort" and would not recommend to anyone looking for a clean, accommodating place to relax. Spend more money and go elsewhere...if anyone wants actual, RECENT pictures, I'd be more than happy to share.

I stayed at Barceló Capella Beach Resort in Juan Dolio for 3 nights. The place is beyond beautiful. You seriously feel like you are in a magical kingdom in heaven, which makes it a very nice place to take pictures. The pools are very clean and well taken care of. The beach is also very clean and the waves are nowhere near big, so I recommend this beach for families with small children.

The Check-In process is extremely irritating because everyone crowds the front desk at check-in time and tries to cut you in line because they know the front desk people. My advice to you if you arrive at the hotel before 3:00pm and have to wait to check in - Begin to stand in line at 2:45pm just so make it clear that you are priority. The People are very nice and care about everyone, they just lack organizational skills because there is too much going on at the same time. So just compose yourself and don't let it get to you.

The fact that it is all inclusive, makes the bar feel a bit unorganized, so when you get to the bar, make sure you grab the bartenders attention by calling out his name or say " Ay Mano," and put one hand out. If you just stand there, and wait for him to notice you, you will never get your drink.

The Buffet area is very clean and there is a lot of food and a variety of options. Please be advised that during breakfast and lunch, flies will try to attack you and your food because the buffet area sends out a strong appetizing smell. SO PLEASE bring the strongest bug spray and spray every inch of your body and all your belonging, including your clothes in the morning before going to breakfast. Then repeat this same procedure before going to lunch. - I didn't bring a strong enough repellent and suffered attacks and bites. I had to go to the local store and get the OFF's Deep woods repellent (the strongest one) and it worked like a charm.

The night shows on saturdays are very FUN but some of the entertainment is not appropriate for young children, so just be aware of that and don't be shocked, it's a whole different culture.

A lot of the employees in the restaurant, buffet area, and bar don't speak perfect English, so they may keep it very short with you so they aren't embarrassed or humiliated. Now, if you throw in some Spanish words and smile, it shows that you are humble enough to try. That will win their hearts and they will become very loyal to you and always look out for you incase you need assistance.

The rooms vary. Some people get really nice rooms and others get the older ones. If you end up with the older ones, the cleanliness is a bit; therefore, don't settle for it, simply wait until around 6:00pm (when the check in desk is very slow) and ask to change the room. They will with pleasure. - they did so for me.

When you go shopping at the resort gift shop, DO NOT rely on the gift shop employee for the currency conversion. They will tell you the wrong price. My advice to those who have smart phones, is to download the "Ez Calculators" app. It has a currency converter tab and it is very up to date. I proved their employee wrong twice with that app. She tried to tell me 150 Dominican pesos was $5.00 when it really was $3.65. Then she tried to say 450 Dominican pesos was $14.00 when it was really $10.94. So be aware currency conversion at the gift shops.

This place was a wonderful experience, I left my purse out and about several times to test my surroundings and no one touched a thing. So people are trustworthy, just always maintain caution, but know that you are in a safe place.

Bottom line advice: Smile, lighten up, eat all you can, drink all you can, dance, take advantage of the activities they offer, and bring LOTs of singles so you can negotiate prices.
