“Clean, Friendly, Safe & Fun at a Reasonable Price”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 7, 2013

Spent January 29th - Frbruary 5th 2013 at Hooked and had a wonderful experience. Was surprised to find new owners of only four minths of the facility after booking this place based on great reviews from the past, but the new owners are eager to at least live up to the reputation, if not surpass it. I travelled there alone, and found as much solitude or social interaction as I wanted. The owners Walter and Jeanette have, in a short time, established a relationship with many of the local business owners, including taxis, restaurants, and surf schools to make your stay here as effortless as an all inclusive. The location is almost perfect. It is a close four-minute walk to the Encuentro Beech, where the surfing is great. The grounds are also only a short 8 minute scooter ride form the core of the Cabarete. Which means a quiet place to relax, as well a great place nearby to shop, people watch, dine, or party. I am planning to go back next year for more of the same.

My wife and I stayed at Hooked for an extended weekend in early Dec 2012. The establishment is under new ownership and they are doing a great job adding new amenities such as water filtration (drinkable) for all faucets, amazing yoga studio and much more! The manager, Florian, does a great job of keeping in touch through email as well as in person once you arrive. He can handle arranging anything you need!!!

SURF: Hooked is located a short 5min walk to Encuentro which provides a pumpy right, a few fun A-frames and then the rippable left which needs a N or NNE swell. Overall the surf was fantastic for beginners to advanced surfers. Plenty of surf schools available with both NSP long boards and used performance shortboards. The higher end boards tend to be a little beat up but unless your a advanced surfer who is picky about their boards you’ll have a plenty to choose from.

FOOD: This is the only problem with Hooked and the whole Encuentro area. You only have 2 choices for food, 1) Coconut Palms Hotel which is about 10 mins from the beach or 5 mins from Hooked. The second option is a small restaurant shack attached to the last surf school on the beach. It’s actually the best food I had during my stay, but it’s only open during the day. There is also a guy who sales amazing Empanadas out of the back of his truck. Saying that, I strongly recommend that you plan on renting a scooter from Hooked! It will allow you to buy groceries in Caberete (10min drive) as well as enjoy the all restaurants and night life it has to offer. It also makes the walk back and forth from the beach a little easier.

Hope that helps,
Have fun!

Spent 2 weeks here with no prior booking, just a walk in off the street, as per usual. Place has new owners, doing some great renovations and upgrades, building on what is a little oasis in Encuentro. Great location for surfers with 5 star service from Manager Florian. With a wealth of experience and information on the area from the waves, water and kiting to the bars, restaurants and clubs in Cabarete, Flo's your man. As a solo traveller, his enthusiasm is infectious; organizing surf boards, scooters, bbqs, dinners and day trips, he is a true asset, and I highly recommend anyone to come visit and sample what Hooked has to offer. Thanks for a great trip and great waves!

We just came back from a three weeks travel to the Dominican Republic. We stayed the whole time at Hooked, which is a great place. Especially if you surf or /and kitesurf. The surfspots at playa encuentro are very close and kitebeach is just a 3 min drive. We had great waves and wind during our stay and Hooked Cabarete-Manager Flo tried to help us with tips and information about restaurants and surfspots as much as he could. He was always checking if everything is alright and if everybody is feeling happy and good.
The pool was very clean and our 1,5 year old dauhter loved to play in there. The owners Walter and Jeanette were also super nice and are really took care of their guests.
We can recommend a stay at Hooked 100% and we will be back for sure!

This is a great place to stay if you want to go surfing or if you seek a private and calm place to stay. They offer private surfing classes that take place on Encuentro Beach, just 1mile away, so you can go walking there easily. You can also take yoga classes with Tino, who is a very friendly guy.

The hotel is a large house in a nice neighbourhood but is a 10 mins drive to Cabarete.
We stayed at a double room w/ a kitchenette. The first night we were kindly surprised they left us some coffee for next morning. The staff (Carlos and his daughter) were very nice and helpful. The rooms were clean and we had fresh towels daily. The bathroom was a bit old and in need of a renovation, but the rest was simple and in good condition. We also had a prob with our refrigerator that broke down and we had to complain since we like to cook and were afraid our food will go bad. They changed it for an older fridge but at least it worked enough to keep our food ok.

The pool area along with the gardens are very well kept and peaceful enough for resting, tanning or just reading.
We recommend booking some tours and activities they have. We took the thai dinner night and were very happy, the food was delicious and the host was very friendly.

The hotel has a very family sense to it, its very cozy and you can get to know the other guests.
There are two big dogs in site, they are very friendly and usually hang out with you, laying around when you are outside. We also recommend getting the airport pick up service with Marino, very reliable and friendly.

We liked walking so we had no problem walking up to the main road (cabarete-sosua) and took a guaguita or mini bus as the locals do to get to downtown Cabarete. If you don't like packed mini vans with high volume bachata music then i don't advice you to take it, but for me its part of experiencing the local culture.
You can also walk to the Coconut Palms hotel (up the street) and grab a taxi there but for us it was not worth it.

There are also other options: rent a scooter, a car or a motoconcho. Just ask the mananger in site and they will set up everything. We rented both, but were dissapointed in the scooters because they were old and had probs to start them and in the night the lights were not strong enough for driving safely. We got two flat tires and I got burned with the exhaust pipe (beware this is a problem of most scooters here, they have no protection).

The motoconchos are guys on motorbikes that serve as taxis, if you dare just hop in and they will give you a ride for cheap but we recomment to set the price before the ride.

We recommend renting the car at Easy Rider, the owner (Josef) was very friendly and helpful giving us directions to where we needed to go.

If you want to experience a beach style vacation then this is the hotel for you!

Prior to finding this place we were stuck staying at places three to four times more with less then have the comfort. We found it completely by accident and were completely blown away. It is a small private compound with about 15-20 rooms. The grounds were excellent very lush and tropical. If you're not a dog person you might want to stay away. There are two friendly and playful "guard dogs," on the ground that want nothing more to lay in the sun and play with you in the pool. Our room was big, spacious and clean. We had a small kitchen, fridge, couch and a small patio with table chairs and a hammock.
The location is excellent, especially if you're a surfer!! No place closer to playa encuentro and it's only a small drive to town. I would not recommend if you're expecting an all inclusive, but if you want to get a little of the local culture and a great value stay here.

I have been on surf trips all over Central & South America and was a little apprehensive about the quantity and quality of surf in the Dominican Republic. I was very pleasantly surprised about both at Playa Encuentro. The accommodations at Hooked are a good value. I paid extra for AC but on my next trip will not. The rooms are cool and I found just using the ceiling fan sufficient. All the rooms have a kitchenettes, hot water and are kept clean. The manager, Florian, goes out of his way to make sure your stay is enjoyable. If you visit make sure you go on the waterfall trip. It is awesome! I would definitely go back and look forward to my next visit.
