We just came back from a week stay. We read the reviews and set our expectations....this place exceeded our expectations. Very welcoming, great staff, great food and great size to meet people and form friendships. We knew it was small but loved how easy it was to get from our room to the pool, beach or dining. The food was very good and had a lot of selection. the staff will get you anything you desire (more Cajun wings!!). We had a great time.
We met and hung out with the owners son (Canadian!!) and his two friends from school. Great bunch of guys and had a great time.
We had a 2 bedroom which was very comfortable and large. we never used the second room. 2 bathrooms were nice to have and the water pressure and temp were always prefect. (We showered in the early evening.)
We went to the Monkey jungle. We did 7 zip line runs and a free fall into the bat cave. Then you feed 23 monkeys as they jump all over you. It was a great time even though it was raining.
Note: You are outside the larger tourist cities so you feel closer to the local setting. The beach in front of Ocean manor is clean and maintained....as you walk in either direction it can get trashy since there are not a lot of other resorts located near by. The water is not great for swimming due to some rock ledges but I did some boogie boarding to the right of the beach area and did not have any issues. There is always wind so the waves do come crashing in...makes for a great nap.
We read about the tourist card fee....we flew AirTransat from/to Toronto and there were no additional fees. Some US travelers paid $15/person to enter and $20/person to leave.
Pros: Great food. Good size. Not crowded. rooms were kept clean and comfortable. No bugs. nice ocean breeze and view.
Cons: (looks like a lot but just giving details)
-Dining can be a bit loud since the dining room is out closer to the entrance and you can hear motorcycles going by.
-The front staff (Ceasar) will provide you a free tour and food at another resort. This is a scam to get you into a vacation sales pitch. $85k for a villa with 50% down today. We went and came back bored and mad. It was beautiful and huge but didn't like the food or how we were treated when we said No to the sale.
-Fly from Canada. direct flights into Puerto Plata for cheaper then US flights.
-Taxi to/from the airport is 1600 pesos or $40
-Use bottled water to brush your teeth. This is a 3rd world country so don't drink the water. -Don't use the motorcoaches (motor cycle taxi). A regular taxi is 300 pesos or $7 US one way to Cabarete.
-Cabarete is a typical town in DR (poor and dirty)...but it is nice to go to their beach and have lunch or a drink at the beach front bars/restaurants.
WARNING: Don't go during Easter weekend (Holy Week). Locals run a car stereo competition in the Texaco gas station. (Thurs-Sat from Midnight to 3am) Unless you like very loud noise. they don't play the entire song...just samples to see who is louder and then it is a process of elimination. THIS ONLY HAPPENS ON THE HOLIDAY WEEKEND.
