“Comfortable, relaxing home away from home”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 17, 2010

As soon as you arrive at the front gate, you are in the beautiful outdoor lounge and veranda style restaurant where you will spend many enjoyable hours. The gracious owners and staff make you feel at home immediately. The beach is steps away and when you want a quiet respite, the rooftop patio is a great place to take a nap or read a book. The restaurant is outstanding and a wonderful value. The restaurant is tucked away from the other beachfront ones, but do yourself a favor and find it! The food is created with such loving care that you will want to try every selection on the menu. I'm a light sleeper, but I slept so well there with the balcony doors open because of the quiet location. It is close enough to the center of town to be able to walk there, but far enough away to be quiet for sleeping. A very enjoyable week!

This is a small family run hotel on Cabarete beach. The fact that it's a owner operated is important as everything works and you can always sort things which are not right. This is not a massive 5 star operation but it has everything you may need on a holiday: a room with en-suite bathroom, hot water, fridge, air conditioning (ask for a room which has it), hair dryer, tv, beach chairs etc. The hotel is probably 400 meters from the main group of restaurants but this is actually a plus as it's away from the road (Cabarete is a one-road village) in a quiet location.
All the main wind/kite surfing operations are easily accessible, just a 5 minute walk away.

I recently stayed at Hotel Alegria for a week, and I had a great time. With so much to do in Cabarete, it was really nice to find such a helpful, friendly staff to answer questions and give suggestions. The hotel is tucked away on a cozy side street, which is terrific because it’s far enough from the congestion and overbearing loud music pumping from the middle of the beach, yet close enough where it’s just a quick walk when you want to get there. The rooms are clean and comfortable, and I had easy access to the internet in the lobby. My room had a cool terrace with a nice private feel, facing the water. I would recommend this place to anyone going to Cabarate, and I look forward to returning soon.

The room was O.k. simple, no frills. My ocean view was not much of a view. The hot tub was nice. All my cash got taken out of my wallet that was locked up in the wall safe in the room. They left the wallet with the safe door open, left the credit cards etc.Whoever did it did lock the door behind them when thay left. The owner replaced the money, but wow, the trust was gone. I have a feeling that has happened before.

Actually we have an excellent security record. The safes are completely reliable, when they are closed and locked. As the guest was informed, he had put so much stuff in the safe the door wouldn't close. Despite this factor, we chose to keep the guest happy by restituting the small sum of money he reported to be missing. We regret that neither the explanation nor the restitution were sufficient to satisfy the guest.

This hotel is in a good location if you want to be on the main cabarete strip - it is minutes from the beach, but away from bars etc so therefore quiet. Rooms are clean and the local staff are very friendly and speak excellent english.
However, I would certainly not describe the hotel as being charming. Its website shows the rooms as being much nicer than they really are - in reality they are very cheaply decorated and definitely do not feel homely. The gym is in a terrible state - all the equipment is rusting badly. I have never seen anyone use it, or the roof jacuzzi which is basically a plastic tub filled with heavily chlorinated water.
The management was helpful in email correspondence before I arrived, but are not exactly friendly in person. They are not unfriendly - they just seem disinterested and don't go out of their way to make you feel welcome. They are certainly not as friendly as their bubbly website suggests!
Finally, ocean view room absolutely does not have an ocean view unless you count the very tiny patch that can be seen through trees. I have attached some pictures. In the one with the trees, the bright patch in the middle is the 'ocean view'. You can see from the other two pictures that the room is basically a bit dingy. The TV is very old and temperamental but does work.
In summary - if you're on a budget this is decent enough and is in a good location and clean which are the most important things. But don't expect it to be nice, charming or romantic!

My girlfriend and I went to Hotel Alegria during the "high season" of the week between Christmas and New Year's Eve. Very easy to get to via about a 30 minute cab ride from the Puerto Plata airport. The couple that runs the hotel are very friendly and accommodating ex-pats that will hang out with you at the relaxed but very nice hotel bar/restaurant every night. Made friends easily with other hotel guests due to the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. We were some of the only Americans there (many guests were Canadians and Europeans) which was actually quite refreshing. Hotel Alegria is really affordable too for the location, great service and everything else. We didn't do any of the kite-surfing or wind-surfing activities but never felt out of place.

We stayed in two different rooms both of which were simple but clean and pleasant. The hotel is right on the beach and a 10 minute walk to town, either via the main street or the beach itself. Supermarket Janet right around the corner from the hotel is convenient for water, beer, snacks, etc.

On a small road adjacent to the hotel near Supermarket Janet is a small open-air restaurant (can't remember the name) that serves one of the most amazing pork sandwiches we've ever had in our lives. Went there multiple times it was so good! Also a little further down the road, another small open-air restaurant/bar with great roasted chicken.

Avoid the massage parlor directly across from Hotel Alegria... worst massage ever.

Definitely recommend Alegria over other higher-priced hotels and all-inclusive resorts. Talking to other visitors staying at other places, we always felt like we made the right decision. Would definitely return if we visit Cabarete again.

The atmosphere was great...very laid back. The staff was friendly and helpful, especially Adrian, one of the bartenders at the hotel. It is walking distance to all the good beach clubs and has a wonderful top floor outdoor jacuzzi that is perfect after a long night of clubbing or watersports. I highly recommend it for any traveler.
